Really healthy and inexpensive, Sprouts proudly wears its indie, organic, collective spirit badge on its sleeve. Great food made fresh every day. It’s currently located in a forgotten corner of the SUB near the ongoing construction. It’s worth the short trek though. As UBC becomes increasingly bourgeois and urban hipster, I like to continue to support little places like Sprouts where dreams of sustainability and good food communities can be nurtured.

I came here for their Community Eats which is a great concept! They are entirely volunteer-run and they all put so much care into the food they put out. Although their food on Fridays is by donation, it’s still super balanced and flavourful. Last week they had hummus, bread, salad with grapes and a chickpea stew if I remember correctly. Everything had nice herbs and spices to add flavour too. I’m keen to see what they have on other days of the week! Also they make vegetable boxes and deliver to anyone who lives on the UBC campus: D

just checked out community eats on their last friday lunch of summer semester. i had a quinoa/veg dish, kale with pineapple salad(wish the kale had been massaged — it was tough and bitter), a fruit salad and fruit crumble. i would definitely check this out regularly if i were a full-time student! can you really do better than by-donation friendly handmade mostly vegan food? it’s a potluck vibe and i must admit that i think the food my friends bring to potlucks is tastier, but that wouldn’t stop me from trying this place again. would love to see what they have during the busy semesters! i think it would be fun to volunteer here too! ps as mentioned previously, be sure to bring your own container and cutlery!

If you’re a vegetarian/vegan, or you like inexpensive but healthy food, sprouts is your safeguard for snacks & meals on campus. If you’re a meat eater, sprouts is a great way to test the waters and see what those vegans are talking about! The vegan brownies are seriously to die for, and the soups are delicious and comforting. Plus, everything is incredibly cheap because it’s all run by an amazing group of student volunteers, and a lot of the produce is donated by local stores. They have a decent selection of products for sale as well, including tofu & tempeh, local veggies & mushrooms, beverages, milk, honey, jams, teas, and bulk products(chickpeas, rice, oats, etc.), all at very reasonable prices. But the best part — by far — about sprouts: community eats! Lunch by donation(the most they expect is $ 1) every Friday is the best thing ever. You get bread, a protein dish, some type of roasted veggie(s), a grain(quinoa, rice, couscous, etc), salad, fruit, and sometimes a spread for your bread(hummus, baba ghanoush) or baked goods. The only conditions: you have to bring your own container(they won’t serve into disposables) and you have to wait in a pretty long line. But those are totally acceptable in my opinion. This is what will keep me coming back to sprouts again and again!

*FREE* food on fridays?! In my first year I couldn’t believe it. Bring the biggest tupperware casserole container you can find and a fork and come early(around 11?). If you’re poor, it’s worth the wait in line if you show up late but be sure to bring a book. Every other day of the week they have the cheapest(and best) food on campus. Like Iain M. said, get the soup, bread, coffee, brownie combo. The brownie, by the way, is amazing. The only reason I don’t give this place 5 stars is because 2/3rds of the time I come here for lunch some hippy tells me that they’re out of the soup but that I could buy some granola whatever for $ 2.99. No thank you!(see? Even none hippies like this place!) Bottom Line: A hidden gem. This place serves great food and for some reason the other places in the SUB are still open. You *HAVE* to try this place.

Sprouts is a lifesaver. Eating at UBC used to put a hole in my wallet, or my stomach – sometimes both. Then I found Sprouts. For $ 5.25, you can get a soup, bread, coffee and a brownie! Nothing else compares. And the free food on Fridays is the best meal of the week.

The best place on UBC to get your local and organic fix for fruits, vegetable, grains and eggs. I love their trail mix. They also serve lunch made from local products. Many of the items are from UBC Farm which is about one kilometre away. All of the items are vegetarian on the lunch menu. It’s all about healthy eating folks. You heard of Welfare Wednesday eh? They have something known as Free Food Fridays or how they call it as Community Eats. They will serve you awesome cooked free food or what you can afford to pay as a donation during lunch between 11:30am to 1:30pm. Just remember to bring your own container! All staff at Sprouts are volunteers and it’s a non-profit organization, so you’re getting real value too.
