I should have listen to the Unilocal reviews! Kicking my self as I Unilocaled them first. Not sure how they are a so called catering company?! The food was subpar edible, but not fantastic. Ordered a couple of bentos and sushi. Tempura was darker than normal and oily. They likely do not change the oil frequently. No where near authentic Japanese. Service what service! Actually shocked what I heard on my way out. Basically got my receipt for $ 40 worth of take out and headed to the door. Meanwhile cashier/who knows maybe the owner goes over to the sushi chef in Chinese and says«not even a cent.» Little does she know I can understand them. Wow, so rude. There is a time and place to tip; especially when you receive great customer service! Clearly«you– Riz cashier lady» are self entitled and are money hungry. It’s take out for bloody sakes. It’s called hard work and you have to earn it in my books. I will not be coming back any time soon!!!

This place is quite small in space which is not an issue so if you are planning on going there with a large group of people you might be disappointed. It is definitely a place to have lunch at with the same variety compared to a generic sushi place. The owners don’t seem to be Japanese and the air conditioning is cranked up a lot which can be a bit uncomfortable if you sit below it. The service is not the worst but I wish their English proficiency was a bit better since communicating can be awkward at times. I have been to this place a few times now and decided to give it 3 stars. Will most likely go again at one point but only because it’s close to work.

This place keeps getting bad reviews… but I love it! I was just here yesterday and it was packed but the service was not slow, the waitress was not rude or loud. The food quality was great and none of my rolls fell apart. I’ve been coming here for about 2 years now and have never had a poor experience. The prices are decent, the portions are decent, the food is great. I’m wondering if maybe it’s just a hit and miss for people? Or maybe I just go at the right times? Either way, I’ve never had a bad experience.

Please please please ask the waitress to keep her voice DOWN! plus yes I do understand her language and its ANNOYING. All my coworkers are not coming here anymore just bcoz of her rudeness. The deco and her voice make me feels like that I’m sitting in the washroom eating sushi and listening to her yelling all the time! Food was just ok. U get what u pay. For only $ 7.95 lunch box what can u say.

Unfortunately, the service has really gone downhill in the 8 years that I lived in the area. Before, everything was quality at a reasonable price! However, it’s just a sign of the times that most sushi combos are close to $ 11 whereas before the sushi combos were only $ 8! I’ve seen quite a number of waitresses that come and go at this location but unfortunately the waitress that they have now is really rude, uneducated, and just an ill-mannered person. I don’t appreciate being talked about in the language you speak but if you want to swear, please don’t swear in English. I’m not surprised why some of the sushi chefs and line cooks/other kitchen helpers have all quit due to her bad attitude. I have actually seen people walk out based on just how engaging she is… Other than that, my last order was quite a few months ago and I haven’t ordered anything since. The owner has really good personality and amazing skills making sushi but again, his efforts and financial issues are clearly seen, not only in the quality of food, also in his employees… I’m sorry but I’ve moved on to another Japanese sushi place… Thank you for the service over the years and best of the luck to the owner!

Been going here for 5+ years. The food was really good but lately the last year the quality and taste have went down a bunch of notches. Thought I’d give them 1 more try today. Ordered the dynamite and spicy Tuna roll. I had to throw it away. Was disgusted by the food. I also asked for less rice and they failed on that request aswell. Really sad I had to put this as a review cauee I used to love this place.

Don’t bother. You’ll pay too much for substandard sushi. I ordered the spicy combo and couldn’t believe my eyes when it arrived slathered in boring pink mayo. Rolls are poorly formed and sloppy. So far the only yumminess is the soya sauce and wasabi. :/ Even the dynamite rolls were unidentifiable to my palate. And they’re using a low grade non– sushi rice.

I have worked in the area for quite a few years and have come here every now and then. Recently, I’ve been coming here more often and while I see improvements in the décor, I see deterioration in the service. Riz appears to be so busy with their catering that they can’t even provide good service and prompt food to those that choose to eat in their restaurant. Today, we were a group of 5 who had pre-ordered at about 10:45 and got into the restaurant at about 11:10 am. We were the only ones in the restaurant, although there appeared to be some catering orders because the workers were all visibly stressed out(and the one main waitress kept mentioning how busy they were — she mentions this practically everytime I am there). We got our food at different times, mine(a simple Beef Bento box) arriving the latest at 11:40 am. Considering I had to be back at work before noon, this seemed to be even more upsetting than their usual slow service. All we got due to the delay is a free drink each. A member of our party kindly but sternly voiced her opinion about how poor the service is and that we had perviously still continued to visit despite previous slow service, and all she got was the typical I’m sorry, it’s so busy. As far as food, I usually just go with the Bento Box — it’s decent but nothing special. Rolls tend to fall apart. Even though I have limited lunch options in this area, I will no longer be visiting and forgiving Riz for their continued slow service.

Drove by felt like Mexican(there is a Mexican place next door to Riz it did not work for me and I walked out) saw that Riz the sushi place was busy and walked in. The place is clean and the people that took my order were friendly. Sadly the Tuna was not properly defrosted and it was mushy. My order was messed up(not really a big deal and does not effect my rating location. Riz uses low grade Atlantic salmon for the base rolls. Not Bad Sushi food safe sushi. Just better sushi in the area for similar prices.

Tough Unilocalers here. Though I didn’t find the dynamite roll earth-shattering, the lychee bubble tea & soft coconut jelly is recommended. Sushi roll was quite good texture, and perfect size. very limited parking here so best to park on Broadway and Renfrew. They also do their own catering, you’ll see its 2 – 3 cargo vans all over the city, these high-rollers.

This place gets my votes as one of the worst sushi places in the city, which is sad because I live only 4 blocks away. I was so excited when they opened and went back several times with the hope that they would get better. I can’t beleive it, but they got worse, as they now cut corners on their food. Service is ok, but the chefs need to smile. Period, instead of giving customers that pissed off look. Particularly the owner’s son, who was put in the role as sushi chef by his father(pretty sure he didn’t train in Japan). And true to Chinese fashion(I’m Chinese, so don’t mind me say), Riz sushi is cheap and skimps on their sushi. Ever have a paper thin peice of fish in your nigiri sushi? Come here and you will. Want super thin salmon sashimi and get charged an arm and a leg for it? No problem, here you go. The sushi itself tastes terrible, every thing, either too greasy, oily, too much rice, or just no taste. Their bubble tea is powder and lots of suguar. Are you kidding me? I won’t go back and I recommend that you read ALL the reviews on here before you decide to go and have a bad dinning experience at a place that is too cheap to give quality food. This place doesn’t even deserve a star, in my opinion.

Went there for lunch recently. It was packed. Admittedly there aren’t many alternatives nearby. The Katsu Don was decent. Just like you would expect.

I don’t like mayo in my rolls, it doesn’t match the flavour and to me is a sign of a poor sushi chef. Also thanks Riz for ruining half my lunch by dumping a pile of fish flakey scale things all over my agedashi tofu. Thankfully a co-worker wanted it so it didn’t get chucked in the garbage. GROSS.

Yam Tempura roll is disgusting! Just deep fried yam and mayo, where the heck the veggies at? The yams also seemed to be mostly dried up end pieces, how does that even happen?

I hate to even give this place one star. I’ve only eaten at the West Pender location. Do not, under any circumstances, eat here. I got the sushi special of tuna, california and salmon. I was told I could sub out one of the rolls so I chose to nix the salmon and get a dynamite. It was an extra charge of $ 1.65 for that substitution. Way over priced. But I thought, why not give it a chance. It could be really tasty. I was wrong. The california rolls were saturated with mayo. The tuna roll tasted off. The dynamite roll was bland and all three rolls would not stay together when picked up. My friend got the chicken bento box with the same disastrous results. Her chicken terriayki had bones in it and her rolls were overloaded with mayo and falling apart. I expected this kind of crap food from a place that charged a lot less. Don’t eat here unless you want to throw your food away barely touched.

I’m actually a big fan of Riz Sushi! I’ve been working at the Broadway Tech Center just across the street for almost 2 years and I pay a visit to this place quite often during my lunch breaks.(It sure beat the sushi place down the street…). Heck, I even order delivery or take-out when for dinner sometimes! During lunch hours, it’s packed. It’s a pretty small restaurant so it fills up quickly. If I’m not eating in, I usually call ahead of time and pre-order for take-out. This place has the BEST spider roll(soft shell crab). They give you a HUGE piece of it. Other favorites: tuna avocado roll, negitoro roll, salmon sashimi, teriyaki chicken, wakame salad. There is quite a bit to choose from on the menu and they’ve recently added some fancier items as well — black cod, tuna tataki etc. A popular lunch order — bento box for about $ 6. Riz Sushi isn’t the best sushi place out there, but it’s definitely one of my favorites. For a small restaurant, I’d say it’s doing pretty well — and the seating arrangement and space is much better now that they’ve renovated.

Don’t waste your time. I ordered the two most common and basic rolls. A california roll, and an avocado roll. The california roll was all messy and cut uneven, with lots of gaps between the outer rice layer. The avocado was browning with the same messy and sloppy outer rice layer. Buyer beware, not worth it.
