Several years ago, HMV closed its flagship Vancouver store on Burrard and Robson in the space currently occupied by Victoria’s Secret. With CD sales in decline, there really was no need for a two story entertainment megastore. Though I do miss that store for its massive selection of music. Last year, HMV opened up a new store on Robson. This store is much smaller than the previous store. Still it is a welcomed addition to have this chain back in downtown Vancouver. The store is a lot more reasonable in size and more centrally located among the stores on this shopping street. If you are looking for the newest releases of music and DVDs, you can find it here. They also sell a lot of entertainment gift items. The prices are pretty decent. They had a nice Black Friday sale recently. Bought a few recently released CDs(Ellie Goulding, Ryan Adams, The Weeknd) on special for Black Friday all for just a little over US $ 20 as the prices were cheaper here than buying them on Amazon due to the CAD-USD exchange rate. If you are looking for a music and DVD store in downtown Vancouver, this is the best place to shop if you are looking for mainstream entertainment.

Was happy to learn that HMV had re-opened on robson street in downtown Vancouver after their flagship store shut down just a few years ago. The store is slightly bigger than the metrotown location and has a good selection of bargain priced blockbuster movies and top cd’s of current artists. Been there a few times since their grand opening and the staff for the most part are friendly and helpful when you enter and browse the aisles. Not much to complain about and staff can order an item that isn’t in stock for you.

Really happy that HMV is back downtown. It’s very bright, well stocked, and is just very welcoming when you step through their door. On the first day they opened, I picked up a copy of Hey Arnold!(that show with the football headed kid)…I’ve never seen that offered ANYWHERE else. That’s the thing about HMV isn’t it? You step into the store with the intent of passing the time but end up leaving with either a movie, a CD, or maybe some Doctor Who paraphernalia

Welcome back HMV. They closed their superstore in Vancouver, while they have superstores in most other larger cities in Canada, they skipped out on reopening one in Vancouver. So the new store will have to do, its a bit smaller than Metrotowns location, but more convenient than going all the way out there when i visit. Its very bright, and open, the employees were happy. Usually have some good deals here, but back catalog items can be VERY expensive. Always worth stopping in to see whats on sale.

The new permanent location of HMV had a grand opening today at 1148 Robson Street. Unlike their test market pop up shop last year, this seems to be a little more permanent. I am surprised that HMV decided to open their doors again after the big one failed to make ends meet. I am more surprised that people actually still care about music. The grand opening was celebrated early in the morning with the first 100 people getting a free bracelet to the Lights concert performance on Wednesday showcasing her acoustic material off Little Machines. The store is small, however, they’ve made an effort to carry regular catalouge and new releases. They did have some Black Friday left overs from the other locations, however, truthfully it is not different than their other sales during the year.
