I go to their Victoria Dr. branch once a week. They don’t have the steamed dim sum stuff but still love their food. Like someone mentioned, just point what you want. I don’t know what’s in the inside but always tasty and cheap. Hidden gem :)

Don’t be intimidated by the icky surroundings and all Chinese menu! Just ask the lady to give you one order of the shrimp rice roll and you are good to go. Make sure you don’t go too late because shrimp rolls sell out pretty quickly. Also, OPENYOURCONTAINER and check if it is indeed a shrimp roll. The lady sometimes attempt to slip you a pork or beef one when they sell out of shrimp. And yeah, pretty awesome rice rolls, even though I am not a fan of their beef and pork flavors at all.

Well worth the 17 minute walk from Stadium station. I wanted to try everything because I rarely come out this way. I came out of there with a huge bag of goodies for under $ 25. I nabbed the last Styrofoam box of pork rice roll, bought half a dozen steamed pork and veggie dumplings, 6 sesame balls, 3 deep fried pork and veggie dumplings, 1 box of white bean cakes, 2 sticky rice wraps, and a box of 5 sweet red bean rice cakes. Wouldn’t recommend the sticky rice wrap, rice was hard, undercooked. Everything else was enjoyable, however the rice roll stood out. It’s a different texture than I’ve had anywhere else. It’s actually not rolled into a roll! They didn’t give me soy sauce to go with it though. I had to point to everything since there was no English on the wall menu. I was pleasantly surprised that the lady responded in English to my questions! Good thing there were customers ahead of me, otherwise I wouldn’t have known they had steamed dumplings available. Would definitely come back for the cheap take out dim sum.

Was excited to try this place out. Brought my mom with me. Was not overly impressed but not disappointed eitheir. Rice rolls were good. Rice cakes were OK, kind of tough and sliced too thick. Dumplings were OK — skin is too thick. Chesnutty filling. This is quality you would expect for $ 2.50-$ 3.50 food. It is good STREET food. Don’t come in with expectations any higher than that please. Service was scary. Area was scarier. I don’t think I’ll be back on purpose, but if I were in the area again, I’d stop by for rice rolls only.

* Classic Chinese bakery * I love the classics. Chinatown in Vancouver is long past its prime, with many newer areas of development having the latest waves of Chinese immigrants and the restaurants/shops that come with the newer waves. But in the old Chinatown area there are still a few classic gems that have been doing business there for years. Golden Wheat is a typical classic Chinese bakery, complete with the trays and tongs on entering and elbows being put into your kidneys by senior citizens wanting to get ahead of you on line even though you are letting them pass anyway out of respect to their age. In addition to all the typical Chinese bakery offerings, this one also is known for its rice rolls, which they prepare fresh after you order. I ordered the shrimp rice roll($ 3.00) and was told it would be about 10 minutes for them to make it as there were several folks ahead of me. I also ordered a jin deui(90 cents) to snack on while waiting. The jin deui was perfectly fried and very fresh so that the outside was crispy without the sesame seeds being burned, while the inside was soft and chewy. Perfect texture. The red bean filling was generous and not overly sweet. This was a great classic jin deui. Photos: and The shrimp rice roll is the classic layered type. You don’t find this type around Vancouver very much, so it is a special treat. The layers were cooked perfectly and nicely textured with a few green onion pieces for flavour pops. The shrimp were snappy and cooked just right with a nice pop of seasoning without being overly salty. They were mixed throughout the layers instead of just wrapped — very classic presentation! There was a thick soy provided in a side cup to punch things up if you needed more salt. Very nice rice roll! Photo: So yes, I’m a fan of the classics!

I love this bakery. They have the cheapest treats. Most things are under $ 5 which is a score for me on a budget. I love the sticky mango rice balls and rolls. Most things are made in house. For $ 2 you get a generous serving of mango pudding.

As a Chinese Canadian I had always went to Chinatown as a kid with my parents to do things like shopping and getting a haricut, but every time we made sure so stop at Golden Wheat Bakery for what is probably the tastiest snack/meal you can get in Chinatown. For 2.50 it is amazing what one can get. The rice rolls(with your choice of beef, pork, shrimp or charsui pork) are heavenly. And for two freaking fifty! But let me educate all those lovers of good Cantonese food, the rice rolls they do here are not the crappy rolled ones you’ll find in dim sum places, they’re authentic with the filling steamed into the roll. You literally cannot find them anywhere else here in Vancouver, even with all the high-end Cantonese places around here. Although the place is a little dingy, the quality of the food there is top-notch and unbeatable relative to the price. Non-Chinese speakers beware though, its really hard to order without knowing Chinese but by pointing at an item they’ll know what you want.(for reference the rice rolls are the rectangular Styrofoam containers by the counter) If you ever stop by Chinatown make sure to head over to Golden Wheat Bakery and be sure to try the rice rolls, they’re the real deal!

Tried their beef rice rolls and OMG are they ever delicious. They are not like those you get at the dim sum places where the rice rolls are wrapped around small amounts of beef, rather here its like ribbons of rice rolls wrapped around tons of beef. So delicious for only $ 2. Amazingly good!

***Strictly Review for Steamed Rice Noodle Rolls*** I want to start off by saying, I’m not a steam rice noodle roll ran at all. I’ve never enjoyed it and only ate it when others ordered the dish while eating dim sum. However, every since I went to Guangzhou two years for a vacation, and tasted authentic versions I’ve been converted. I still don’t enjoy the typical style where it literally looks like rolls of rice noodle wrapped around the meat, but the way some shops did them in Guangzhou is more more thin layers of the rice noodle, so thin and silky it’s easy to pork out on a gigantic serving. Unfortunately since that trip, no place in the Bay Area, California has anything remotely close to what I had in China. I was never expecting to eat anything like that again until visiting Golden Wheat Bakery. A good sized serving only costs $ 2.50CAD! It’s made fresh and very close to how steam rice rolls are made in Guangzhou. They do take some time to make it, but it was worth the 10 minute wait.

This is my favorite Chinese bakery in Chinatown. I was there on a Sunday evening and they had fresh BBQ pork buns, only $ 1 each plus tax. They have a pretty good variety of buns and other items. Be prepared that most of the people who work here do not speak any English whatsoever. If you know what you want but you don’t know the Chinese name for it, you may have some trouble finding it.

After watching the Chinese New Year parade, I walked pass Golden Wheat Bakery on Gore Street in Chinatown. I purchased some freshly made Chicken buns and some freshly made rice noodle shrimp wraps. The chicken bun was surprisingly good with lots of fresh tasting chicken inside. The rice shrimp wrap was very tasty, but the shrimp wasn’t wrapped too well, so a lot of the shrimp fell out. Nevertheless, the shrimp was of good quality and looked fresh. This is a good place to bun Chinese style buns or other Chinese baked goods.
