Gina Brown’s Yarn

I want to like this place as I am getting more into knitting or trying to. The lady was helpful enough, however, wasn’t really impressed by their color selection of yarn compared to other shops. The customer service was amazing but nothing popped out at me for project inspiration.

I love independent yarn stores. The associates are always yarn users. Gina Browns in Vancouver was no exception. I had intended to pick a pattern and then a yarn but I found the yarn first. I didn’t know what to do with it. The lovely young woman behind the counter knew exactly what to do and I was in heaven. $ 50 for 5 balls and new hook was a little higher than I intended to spend until she also explained the exchange rate right now is in my favor as an American. I ended up spending around $ 35 for enough to make 4 – 5 fashion scarves.

Not bad yarn selection but won’t be going back. Bought the wrong size crotchet needle and wanted to exchange it for a different size. The receipt says no returns on needles, it does not say no returns or exchanges. The girl at the counter advised they can’t do the exchange on needles, she went on to say people use the needles and then return them after they’ve been used, it happens all the time. I just bought it yesterday along with about $ 50 worth of yarn, the package was still sealed, the receipt does not say no exchanges. Seriously for $ 5.99 you can’t make a customer happy. Not impressed, off to another yarn store for me.

This is favourite yarn store in Vancouver. Not only the selection is great (you can spend hours just looking at all the beutiful yarns they have), but the staff is always friendly and ready to help you.
The owner, Gina herself is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and the staff she hires is the same.
They have lots of Malabrigo, Noro, Debbie Bliss, Cascades, Berroco… pretty much everything you’re looking for.

Great selection of yarn — better than Three Bags Full or Urban Yarns. But if they didn’t have great yarn, I probably wouldn’t go back, at least not in the short term. Their customer service is okay if they have what you need in the store, but terrible if you try to order something through them. Also, they sell out of yarn very quickly and apparently can’t get more, so keep that in mind when buying for a project, especially if you improvise things.
The particular case that has put me off for now: My sister asked me to knit something for her for Christmas, improvised off a picture she’d seen online. Gina Brown’s had the most yarn possibilities for what I needed, but of course, all for $ 16+ a skein. Not wanting to invest a lot of money, only to find out that it wasn’t the right yarn, I bought one skein, went home, knit with it and found it was right. I went back two days later, which was the soonest I could get back there, and they were completely sold out of the yarn I needed. I was told they could order it and it shouldn’t be hard to find, but it was late Saturday, so they couldn’t check the Calgary store until the next day and couldn’t call Toronto (if need be) until Monday. Still hadn’t heard anything from them by Wednesday, so I called to check, and was informed by the man working that he couldn’t help me, he had no idea whether the woman who’d taken the order had made the calls and he couldn’t follow up himself. All he could do was leave a note for her to phone me when she was working on Thursday. She never called. So the following week I phoned again, during business hours, and got their voicemail. I left a message with all my details, requesting that they return my call to let me know the status of the order. Again, they’ve never called me back. I don’t have weeks to spend playing phone tag with them, so I just ordered it online. Terrible customer service; I know it was only $ 35 of yarn for this project, but I buy a lot of yarn over time, and I will be buying it elsewhere now if at all possible.

A complete beginner knitter, intimidation and frustration are my two worst enemies to further pursuing my hobby. Gina Brown’s Yarn demolished both of those impediments by being the absolute friendliest knitting shop around! I have received the warmest treatment every time I’ve visited, expert help without a trace of snobbery. The classes are very well priced and a great way to get a solid foundation. Problem with your project? A warm smile and thorough knowledge will guide you through. They are a perfect example of how a small, independent business is worthy of loyalty: they look after their own.
(PS: to the other reviewer — the clerk, sadly now gone, had a Cork (Irish) accent. And yes it’s very lovely. I’ve got the same one. Too bad she went back home!)

The store has a really wide selection of wool at standard prices, which alone would keep me coming back, but the service is really excellent. The people who work here, including the owner, are friendly, helpful, and without the condescension that some elite knitters can have.

Locally owned business with incredibly helpful and knowledgeable staff. I once turned up with a sweater that I needed help fixing before I could finish and the girl there took the time to fix it for me and taught me how to not make such crazy mistakes in future:). Where else have you gotten that kind of service? Beautiful selection of yarns, too.

The woman I dealt with (lovely Scottish? accent) was super helpful. The store is well organized and I was able to find everything I needed. I’ll be back!

Being charged for cheap shelf sitting on the floor which my child accidentally broke is the worst customer service ever. My son apologized profusely and I was about to purchase some yarn when I was told I was going to be charged $ 10 for a flimsy piece of junk the probably cost half of that at the dollar store. The owner lost my business forever and I’ll be sure to share this story with everyone I know. I had every intention of supporting this small local business but I guess it’s back up to Homecraft Importers.

SO FANTASTIC! Everything you could hope for in a yarn store, every kind of wool, every accessory. Beautiful quality materials, and expert staff make this a must visit for you knitters. Can’t wait to finish my current project and go back to get some more beautiful yarn!

Great little yarn shop just at the end of a busy, bustling street. The shop is small but has a lot of selection of beautiful yarn. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful.
It’s also one of the only places I found that sells the «Eucalan» wool wash… I’ve looked everywhere and it’s either online or at Gina Brown’s!

Great place! I came to check it out today — I needed a few things for my current project, and had both the needles and the buttons! great selection of needles, yarn and buttons as well (not as many buttons as a Button Button shop but more than enough to accommodate a knitting project IMHO). Will be back for sure!

I loved this store the minute it opened. Christina, the store owner, is just a sweetheart! The store is simple and not pretentious, and there is absolutely no snooty attitude here! She even kept the store open a few more minutes after closing so that I could get the knitting needle sizes that I needed. She knows her yarn and her products extremely well, showing what her grandma and mom passed down to her I’m sure. I still haven’t made it down for the knitting night on Thursday, but everyone I’ve talked to in that store (whether they work there or not) are just really open and nice!

I came here in desperation for a type of yarn i ran out from another shop. The man working here was so helpful and so nice i am forever grateful to him. Being a beginner knitter is hard enough and then going into shops and trying to buy something when you have no idea what anything means yet is pretty intimidating. I would totally go back here. They also have beautiful scarf’s on their website that they have done as examples.

Fall = knitting time!
Finally had the time to check out Gina Brown’s Yarn after living in the area for almost a year and I loved it! I didn’t really have a project in mind, but the owner (?) was able to decipher the vague concept I had in my mind into a free pattern online and a decently priced ball of mossy green yarn! She was very patient with my indecision as to what to make and what yarn to pick, offering lots of advice and yarn/​pattern choices.
She even said I could come back for help (if they weren’t too busy) in case my knitting skills turned out to be rustier than I had imagined. They have a knitting pow-​wow on Thursday nights too! I can’t wait to finish this project just to go back again. :)

What a wonderful yarn shop! You’ll find a great variety of yarns, colours, brands all under one roof.
So, I visited the website/​blog for the store and found out the history. Gina Brown’s is named after the owner’s grandmother. The original Gina Brown’s yarn shop is actually in Calgary and the granddaughter opened this shop in Vancouver. She states,
«I’m the granddaughter of Gina Brown, and have decided to finally take the plunge and open my own location of our family yarn store in Vancouver, with love and invaluable support of my mum, Diana Brown [for Gina Brown’s Calgary go to

I visited today on the hunt for «robin’s egg blue» yarn … and you know what? I found it at Gina Brown’s.
The person working (possibly the owner?) was so friendly and helpful in helping me find exactly the right yarn for my project.
Prices seem to be in line with other shop’s I’ve been to lately. I believe the Debbie Bliss balls I bought were around $ 7 – 8.
I’ll definitely return when I’m in need of more yarn! Oh, and they also offer lots of classes!
