CIVITAS is a Vancouver-​based urban design firm committed to the development of ecologically sensitive communities, sustainable city shaping and authentic place making. We are proponents of new urbanism, emphasizing walkability, accessible transit, higher densities, diverse housing types, active mix of uses and the creation of memorable places.

History

Established in 1988.

The president and founder, Joseph Hruda has over 25 years of recognized design achievement in new sustainable community and mixed-​use projects. In Vancouver, Joe was responsible for planning and urban design of the Coal Harbour project on the downtown waterfront.

Business Owner

Joe Hruda is the founder and President of CIVITAS Urban Design and Planning Inc. and a principal of CIVITAS Architecture Inc., a multi-​disciplinary urban design and planning consulting practice. He is a Harvard University Master of Architecture graduate and a Gold Medal recipient from the University of Manitoba.
