My family dentist, Dr Michael Yeung, retired two years ago. He worked out of this same building, and most of his patients were simply transferred to Dr Chou after he left his practice. I loved my old dentist… I loved the way he hummed along with the soft rock that was always playing in the office, I loved the way he gently prodded my gums with his periodontal curettes, and I loved the taste of that sweet sweet fake banana-flavoured fluoride that he used to stock. Therefore, I was bound to be sceptical of any dentist that followed. Dr Chou is a good dentist. He is personable, and I feel he is extremely capable. However, I have had several experiences at his office over the past year that have prompted me to look for a new tooth jockey. One incident involved being billed for root planning, in addition to my $ 120 cleaning. This service, which was provided without my consent, cost $ 100 extra and involved my hygienist measuring the depth of my «gum pockets» before my cleaning. It did seem strange that my appointment was taking so long, but I just thought I had a really thorough hygienist. They didn’t ask me if I wanted them to do this, which I found sneaky… and greedy. I contested my bill after the fact and they reluctantly dropped the additional charge. I have also found the staff at reception to be scattered. Their website also fails to make a great impression: Dr Chou’s biography says he graduated from the University of British Colombia… is this in Canada or South America?
