Who doesn’t love a great record store? I know I do, and Beat Street is one. Fortunate to have them in town.

I have been coming here for years on and off. It is a small but narrow store. The bins are well organized and prices are dart board, however, not too much off the mark. Customer service is decent. I mostly come here to get some hip hop records. They do carry a small section of new records.

Lots of options for minimal $$ – * Hey, they have 1200’s to sample on! They also sell graf supplies and the largest assortment of 45 cent 45’s I’ve ever seen. Cheap. Tons of dance, downbeat, electro and techno too… decent rock section even! Today, for example, I picked up a Grover Washington Jr. LP today(Mister Magic) for 9 dollars in amazing condition. Score. As well, lots of James Brown and Larry Levan for affordable prices. Reissues aplenty as well. Price is right, vibe is veeeeerrryyyy chill, doesn’t feel stuffy… perfect for digging. Will return again and again.

As far as record stores go, this is top notch. The fact that Nardwuar shops here for all of his gifts for rappers is a dead giveaway. They have all the dj music you could possibly want, hip hop, funk, soul, disco, plus every sub genre of dance music, and they keep it very reasonable on the prices. The dollar bins are stocked with actual gems and they have a ton of other, non-vinyl stuff which will keep the non DJ you may happen to be shopping with entertained. The staff is super friendly and helpful, even helped us located some top sushi places. Big respect to everyone at Beat Street. Awesome spot.

Beat Street are the kings of the beat. I saw them rockin’ that beat from across the street. I have to admit, I’m a sucker for used records stores. No matter how small, there’s always the promise of a gem waiting for my dusty hands to reveal. Beat Street has gems galore. My latest trip inside this aural amusement park made me leave with no less than 15 records, of all flavours. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. After 10 minutes of looking for something I thought wasn’t there, I simply asked and within 10 seconds was handed a copy of what I wanted. He even grabbed another copy from the back and encouraged me to mix and match the best record/cover combination without hesitation. I was DJing an art show that week, post-punk/new-wave style and found several items on my elusive wishlist that I was not able to find elsewhere in town. Prices are fair. Some items are a little on the high end, but peruse the great finds in the $ 2 sections, or in the oodles of 3 for $ 1 rows at the front, and it all averages out nicely. Tickets, shirts, and various record and turntable accessories, they’ve got it all.

I only go here for concert tickets but the guy behind the desk really knows what he’s talking about. He’s super helpful and he must have ESP or something because he calls out upcoming and canceled shows before anyone else. Go here and beware you might spend your entire paycheck on the coolest new acts that are coming to town.
