VETSToronto provides ²⁴⁄₇ emergency &critical care service for small animals &exotics. Doctor & staff round the clock.

We team up with the Kingston Road Animal Hospital in the Beach area of Toronto. Operating out of a neighbourhood clinic allows us to deliver medical care in a personal, comfortable and welcoming environment. We believe pet care is a collaborative effort.

Our full service hospital provides diagnostics, procedures, treatments and services. We have board certified emergency and critical care specialists, internists and surgeons at our fingertips.

Drs Morris Samson and Jonathan Mitelman oversee all cases, ensuring continuity of care and communication with pet owners.

Treatment plan options and costs are openly and fully discussed with clients.

We have a collegial relationship with local vets. Patients are stabilized at our hospital, returned to their referring veterinarian.

History

Established in 1986.

VETS® Veterinary Emergency Trauma Service.

In 2004, Dr Morris Samson and Dr Jonathan Mitelman, in response to a need for local emergency vet care, started to provide 24 hour, on call service from their clinic, Kingston Road Animal Hospital.

They recognized that the Beach and surrounding area had to travel 13 km (20 – 30 mins) for after hours/emergency care at the next closest hospital. These could be potentially life saving minutes. Assessing the ever changing veterinary landscape, they expanded this to full 24/7, on site service in 2009.

VETS® runs in concert with Kingston Road Animal Hospital, providing full service ²⁴⁄₇ medical care and referral services. Emergency doctors treat and stabilize patients, and either return them to their referring veterinarian or hospitilize them for further treatment. Our doctors will follow up with both owners and their referring hospitals.

Business Owner

Dr Jonathan Mitelman graduated with a BSc in physiology and physics from University of Toronto in 1997, then earned his DVM from Ontario Veterinary College in 2002. He joined Kingston Road Animal Hospital/VETS Toronto after graduation, becoming partner in 2005.

Dr. Mitelman is committed to continuing education, training and research, constantly introducing new medicine, technology and equipment to his veterinary hospital.

Myself and a family member have been terribly ripped off at this vet for small animal visits. I am a student and was charged $ 125 for a ten minute check up of my guinea pig which turned out being a tutorial on how to clip it’s nails– which was torture for my guinea pig who was writhing out of this mans grip. Pet stores will cut your pets nails for max $ 10.00
$ 125 for ten minutes makes me feel that being a vet is the best paying job ever. That would have cost me $ 7,500.00 if I stayed for an hour?

Dr. Mitelman is a kind and caring person and an excellent vet. Today, I lost my cat of 10 years. She stopped eating and Dr. Mitelman spent almost 3 hours with us diagnosing her problem and offering solutions. At no time did we feel like we were being bullied into unreasonable procedures or excessive payments.
Unfortunately, what she had was incurable and she went downhill very quickly between Tuesday and today. We decided to end her suffering after a long and happy life (15.5 years). He put her to sleep and was extremely comforting — I do not know what I would have done if anyone else was to have done it.
Our experience with Kingston Road Animal Hospital and Dr. Mitelman was exceptional. I would definitely suggest giving this clinic a try. We will hopefully be returning for something less serious in the future.

I brought my dog in after finding him almost lifeless after I got home from work. I had never seen him like this before and it literally happened in the hours I was away from home. He was fine the day and night before.
He’s a 10 yr old dog. I brought him into this ER… and waited almost 20 min before anyone would see him. The doctor was extremely rough with him and then told me that he looked like he was dying. I asked him to find out what was going on, as he was perfectly fine the day before. He gave me an estimate of approx 2000 $ for the tests and I gave him the OK to do it.
He said that I would have to leave him overnight, but «he probably will not make it through the night». When I asked specifically what he saw in my dog that prompted him to say he was just dying, he replied «well your dog is flat». I asked him to explain and he kept repeating that «your dog is flat»…well, yes, dogs will usually lay there when they are sick. I was pretty appalled at his explanation. He also did tell me my dog’s body temperature was dropping, which meant he was in trouble.
So I said I wanted him to do whatever he could to save him, or to atleast find out what is causing this sudden sickness. He told me he could do the tests, but he wasn’t going to make it. And that I should put him down because he was already dying.
He had no compassion, no sense of urgency. To be honest I got the feeling that if I left my dog there he would have just died in their back room. I paid $ 160 for nothing. I also was trying to leave with a large crate and couldn’t open the door. THe staff just watched me struggle and a lady in their waiting area actually helped me.
I took my dog and drove to Guelph, where they diagnosed him in 30 min, and completely saved his life. He was in ICU for awhile, but he is home and happy now. Thank GOD i left this place. NEVER AGAIN.

I agree with Aaron B. I did, in fact, take these reviews with a grain of salt when I decided to take Nabob in and after all is said and done, I’m glad that I did.
It’s very easy to be upset when you’re not in control, or you don’t have answers. Unfortunately, animals can’t — and wont — point to their pain. The doctors were very thorough in gathering his medical history — at times it was maddening (just fix him already!!!) — there were questions that didn’t seem the least bit relevant to his symptoms but that’s the thing. They were looking for the underlying condition — and for that they get four stars.
Rather than write it off as a simple UTI and send me off with a ‘script, they were able to diagnose kidney disease. Now I’m in a better position to give my guy many happy, healthy years and not a few sickly ones.
Yes, it seemed to cost a lot of money but MY health care is free so what the heck do I know?
did they pressure me into spending it? not once.
I would have liked them to be a bit more proactive when it came to giving me updates but once I relayed that to them, the entire team stepped up and gave me the comfort and answers that I needed. Even going so far as to follow up weeks afterwards.
Dr. Mitelman is a bit of a character, but he is (and the rest of the team are) kind, caring and dedicated to healing your pet. If you’re not looking for those qualities in a vet I don’t know what to tell you…

This is the sort of business where you have to take the reviews with a bit of a grain of salt. People get pretty emotional about their pets and tend to make some knee-jerk statements as evidenced by some of the reviews below. Accusing a licensed veterinarian of being stoned while he was working seems a little like slander to me.
This is/was not my regular vet, we had gone a couple times but found them a little pricey.
Unfortunately however, when my 15yr old Lab had a stroke in the middle of the night, I knew they were 24hrs oncall so I called them right away.
The vet came over within 20mins and let me in. He gave my boy a check over and told me what I had feared. He was pretty much gone.
He told me he could run tests, and try a few things, but in his opinion it would just be throwing money down the drain.
Then he gave me the options for putting my guy down, and we went ahead.
It was not really very much more than the cost of putting down my other dog a year earlier at another clinic in a non-emergency situation. I was impressed. At 2am crying, he could have easily charged me double and I probably would not have blinked. If anything I think the price was a little below what I expected.
They made a nice donation to a Guide Dog foundation in his name, and made a really sweet paw print impression in clay and sent it to me.
Was a tough time, but I was really impressed at the professionalism of this clinic.

While it’s great that these guys will make a donation for an animal you’ve brought to them that ended up having to be put down, they are most certainly very dishonest.
In reference to the response comment from VETS to my previous review, I most certainly acknowledge that they claimed to have made a donation in memory of m’lady’s cat. They most certainly however did not give us the option of euthanasia, and I have the written estimate to prove all the services that they did offer, at the bottom of which there’s a total of between approximately $ 2000 and $ 3000, and verbally we were told that the cost for us to leave him there would be $ 1000.
As for how the cat was feeling before we took him home, he was back to himself. He had been feeling ill for about a month and he had been eating on and off. The reason why we brought him in was that he began falling over as if he couldn’t stand on his feet, and the fact that all the symptoms we gave were taken as the reason for having brought him in to emergency show that there was a miscommunication. That would explain why there is no mention within any of their description under the «Specialties» section below to explain that they will listen to you and ensure that they know what they’re dealing with.
While in this update I have given this clinic an extra star in my review because they’ve made a donation on memory to m’lady’s cat (or so they claim), I most certainly do not respect the staff that lastly dealt with him and even less-so Jonathan M’s comment which blatantly lies about options having been given to us.
So in conclusion, while their initial check-up fee is lower than some of the other emergency clinics around, I would most certainly not return to this clinic based on my experience both in the clinic and with their comments in response to my previous review.

Though this isn’t my regular veterinary clinic, I have had some experience with this clinic when one of my pets was being boarded at a home nearby.
Going to the vet is not always a happy experience, as it usually means your pet is ill, but the doctor at this clinic was pleasant and helpful in a very sensitive situation. The vet was professional and took the time to answer any questions I had.
I can’t speak highly of many other clinics in Toronto, unfortunately — but this seems to be one of the best. Since my experience I have also heard great things about Kingston Road Animal Hospital from other pet owners and I would suggest this clinic for anyone who lives nearby.
