Description

Specialties

Toronto’s First Post Office is a full service post office with box rentals available, as well as Canada’s only postal museum, and a National Historic Site.

Dating back to the British colonial period, this building is one of few left standing from the old town of York. Seat yourself by the fireplace in the cozy reading room, write a letter with a quill pen, seal it with wax, and mail it to anywhere in the world.

A scale model of Toronto in 1837 makes Toronto’s First Post Office an ideal starting point for any exploration of Toronto’s historic Old Town and St. Lawrence neighbourhoods.

History

Established in 1833.

We were the first post office to serve the City of Toronto (incorporated March 6, 1834), and the fourth post office in the Town of York.

The museum and current post office was established after our historic block of buildings (including the Bank of Upper Canada) was restored, and reopened in December of 1983 — its 150th anniversary. The Town of York Historical Society now operates Toronto’s First Post Office as a museum, a National Historic Site and an active working post office.
