Sunnybrook School is a co-ed Toronto elementary school offering children an international education from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. Our private school in downtown Toronto was the first IB PYP school in Ontario. This inquiry based, learner-centered curriculum teaches global perspectives and critical thinking while our students take first steps on the path to life-long learning.
We have a dynamic arts programme and foster multilingualism through our engaging French Curriculum. We have recently introduced Singapore Math and added 4 new classrooms and an Arts Studio.
Singapore Mathematics provides students with the balance of mathematical skills and problem-solving approaches and teaches them to embrace mathematics as a way of understanding the world. The unique Singapore Math approach ensures success for all learners.
1:1 iPads will be a game changer for learning at SBS. September 2014 begins our 1:1 programme for all students, Junior Kindergarten — Grade 6. Collaboration, creativity, digital citizenship, communication and extending learning beyond the school are some of our goals.
History
Established in 1952.
Sunnybrook School was founded in 1952 by Mrs. Irmingard Hoff, as one of North Toronto’s first Preschools. It was originally located in Leaside, and in 1960 the school moved to the present Merton St. location occupying into its own purpose built premises.
A culture of innovation and continuous improvement has guided Sunnybrook School since its earliest days. During the first Merton St. years, the school grew to include grades one through four. In 1985 Mrs. Hoff’s daughter, Irene Davy, Ph.D., became the director of the school. That same year a neighbouring property was purchased and an addition was built, improving the facilities by adding a gym and three classrooms. Preschool classes were phased out in the 1980s to make way for grades 5 and 6. Three further renovations followed, the most recent one in 2011; Sunnybrook is a full elementary school offering JK to grade 6, with one class per grade.
