Description

Specialties

Scherzo is dedicated to promoting a love of music and movement in Toronto. Finding the musicality in your movement and the physicality in your music!

For the musician, the studio offers private or group instruction in piano and voice, and music master classes to co-create and learn from each other. We discover the inner «feel» of music.

For the dancer in you, Scherzo offers swing dancing and Nia dance fitness classes during the school year. Learn how music affects how you move and express yourself.

We hold a music theatre camp in the summer for children aged 6 – 12, exploring the process of putting on a show, from writing the script to the final performance.

History

Established in 2008.

Scherzo means «I play» in Italian. That’s exactly what you should get out of the experience. Why make learning music and movement a chore?

Scherzo grew out of Creative Director, Alcina Chiu’s, mutual interest in music, theatre, and dance. Through her music studies, she gained an appreciation for a wide range of musical ideas. In my theatre and dance training, she learned about the body and expression through movement. However, it wasn’t until the two came together that the real development began in both areas. Music and movement fuel each other and expand our understanding to new levels.

Your success in learning with us lies in three main areas: 1) the enthusiasm and passion of all staff to promote a love of music and movement; 2) the flexibility offered in the curriculum and pedagogy of private lessons; and 3) the originality of the group classes.

Meet the Business Owner

Alcina C.

Business Owner

Alcina completed her Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in Voice. Her passion for music started from an early age, leading her to join any programme that allowed her to express her artistic side. Her time with the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto allowed her to gain an appreciation for piano and theory as she worked up to the highest levels of study offered in both subjects.

A lifelong learner, Alcina is currently doing part-time graduate studies in Music Education. She has completed her Blue Belt certification and license in Nia Dance Fitness, and travelled extensively to compete, learn, and teach in Swing Dancing. She has worked with various schools and community organizations, including Crestwood School, Shakespearience, and Pineway Public School. Her favourite teachers are still her students, who remind her every day that an inquisitive mind and an eagerness for knowledge bring out the best learning environment possible.
