An oldie but a goodie. The Regent Theatre is on Mount Pleasant, just south of Eglinton. I went to a screening and Q&A of the movie Once, last year. We were late for the movie, so we were literally running into the theatre, I didn’t get a chance to admire the interior of the theatre. It’s a pretty old building, built in the late 1920s(ohh look a history lesson!). Like a lot of the older theatres, from the outside it looks tiny, but walk inside and you see that it’s actually quite large. The seats in there are ok, not the fluffiest but not the worse. The theatre itself is pretty clean, unlike those monster AMCs that are popping up everywhere. Of course though the clientele is different. The Regent appeals I think to the older crowd, not so much the young rowdy ones whom you do not want to get stuck in the middle of a popcorn fight with. Speaking of popcorn, the popcorn here is excellent. Over the years, the Regent must have learned how to perfect a bowl of perfectly salted and buttered popcorn. mmmmm-m– good! The movies that play here are usually older ones, as in ones that have been released in the theatres for a while now(and long after you can find them on illegal dvds at Pacific Mall). But skip the illegal dvds and head to Regent instead. It’ll be well worth the slice of Toronto cinema history!
