Phipps is really a warm, welcoming and wonderful place to go. The aromas are breathtaking, the food is made only from real ingredients –no mixes or additives and everything is made from scratch with heart and hand.

We love everything about great desserts and food. We love to make it. We love to eat it. We love to savour it. And we especially love the pleasure that it gives to all our customers. Selling good food is not just business for us – it’s our way of expressing what we stand for and our long time commitment to our customers.

We are all about an energetic group of dedicated bakers, food lovers and caring individuals who are committed to making and selling the best-​tasting, desserts and food that we can.

The decision was made long ago to produce a fresh perishable product without the addition of artificial preservatives. We work hard to be sure you are happy with our product and the service that we provide to you.

History

Established in 1986.

Phipps started in a small bakery in Cabbagetown. In 1990 the decision was made to move onto Eglinton Avenue where there was a lot more room to bake and have a small eat– in area. Ten years later it was time to take the next step and open a larger facility. At that same time the retail was expanded to include more seating and offer more savory items. Most recently the kitchen at the back of the café was opened up so we could really get cooking and brought more of the baking out to the front window for all to enjoy.

In 2005 the company went through a major reorganizing. The wholesale and retail businesses were both at a point where they needed nurturing and lots of one-​on– one to enable them to grow.

Over the years we have enjoyed the recognition that a good product can receive with awards and the press but honestly the best accolades come from the customers that let us know just how much they enjoy both our products and their visit to the café.

As the owner’s comment mentioned, I did return as their products are still hard to resist and the experience from a customer service standpoint was certainly a better one. I haven’t been back recently but will for the next time we host dinner or need to bring desserts to a special occasion.

Hey, diabetes, you’ve met your match! I’m big on desserts, and walking into this bakery you just get the biggest waft of cakes and sweets, it’s virtually impossible to walk out empty-​handed. Get their tart… any tart. Its butter-​y goodness will be so worth the calories!

Phipps Bakery Café was a nice café. There are many tables and seats. I can go there to have a cup of coffee and relax. There are some women who are chatting over coffee and women who are having a regular brunch. It is a nice atmosphere. Coffee is not bad. Pastries are good but not excellent. The staff is nice. I want to come back there to have a cup of coffee and write my journal.

In need of some lovely bakery items/​pastries to take to a dinner party, someone recommended this place to me. Walking into this small and dark — dark in a good way — place takes you into a another sensory world. Fresh baked breads, cakes, cookies and croissants are just a few of the things you can get here. There is also a section for both fresh and frozen meals — Mac & Cheese; Pasta; Tuna Casserole among other dishes. The great thing is that they come in different portion sizes — the one for the single gal is about $ 7.50 — which is good for 2 lunch portions (for me anyways!).
The cakes are Martha Stewart lovely but also a bit pricey — but being on Eglinton? Avenue area it isn’t surprising. I selected a few chocolate croissants and some butter tarts (caramel and chocolate). Both were nice but nothing that blew my mind.
There is an area in the back where you can get hot/​fresh food and sit and eat. If I were in the area I would definitely stop in and grab a cookie… or two.

The place has a beautiful decoration, looks like being inside a story book.

This is a cute little place to have a coffee and baked good. However, the service leaves something to be desired. Too many times I have come in here (a couple time I have just walked out) and there is no one at the front counter to help me and no sign of any available staff. They clearly need to have another staff member on at certain times of the day.
Also, the baking is good but it is not great. I know this part of Toronto sees a price increase on their goods and services but I’ve had much better baking for half of what they sell theirs for. I’m not meaning to bash the place at all, just saying for anyone who is curious.
The ambiance is pleasant though and that is what your extra coin is going towards.

I tried a café au latte and a croissant and I don’t recommend them.
The tables indoors and out front could be more welcoming. Certainly not a place to take a friend or pull out a book or laptop.

Will never visit this establishment again. I made a special trip there on Saturday August 15th around 3:30. There was a lady already there being served and another customer waiting at the counter. There was no greeting or communication that we will get to you soon.
The lady being served was ordering a ton of items and had never ending questions about items in the showcase. This went on for quite awhile and I just got disgusted and left because there was another staff person there who was aware there were two other customers waiting. This second staff person was at the front counter when I arrived but took off to the back food counter and busied herself there.
It’s nice to know customers are not your top priority. This was my first and last visit here ever. There are many other excellent bakeries where I am not subjected to this type of neglectful customer service.

Step inside, inhale that sweet sweet aroma, and just TRY to resist the drool-​worthy selection of cookies, cakes, butter tarts, brownies and ruggelah. Muhahaha… resistance is futile! These decadent goodies belong in your belly.
Personal faves: PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES. Also, the chocolate cake with chocolate fudge icing.
Also, try their gourmet caramel corn. Amazing.
They even make homemade cookie dough that puts Pilsbury to shame.
In the morning, I crave their muffins. Get there before 9am for a piping hot, fresh-​out-​of-​the-​oven treat that falls apart when you eat it (grab a fork). Banana or lemon poppyseed are the best.
This lil’ bakery is first-​class in every way. Irresistible!

Stumbled upon this delicious and cozy bakery\bistro\party supply shop yesterday. Their variety of mouth-​watering butter tarts will leave you wanting to try every decadent flavour. The also have a small but tasty selection of fresh made gluten-​free cookies. I had a soft and chewy one known as an amerettie. Seating area has a charming rustic feel with a lovely mural on the wall. Staff were friendly and seemed to take pride in the success of the store.

A. Quite possibly, the most beautiful bakery in Toronto. When you walk in, stop just inside the door and take in the view. You will get the surreal feeling of having stepped inside the pages of a lavishly illustrated storybook. Literally breathtaking as the aroma of sweet baked goods is heavenly.
B. I won’t even begin to review in detail the taste of the baked goods I tried — sticky caramel butter tarts; gooey crumbly date squares; chewy-​moist, rich chocolate brownies; shortbread filled with lemon curd. Everything tastes as wonderful as it looks. Refer to A.
C. Friendly service. Reasonably-​priced decadence. Pretty packaging suitable for presenting as a hostess gift or sweet surprise. Ample parking nearby.

I went to Phipps in search of excellent pumpkin pie after an extensive google search for all the top places. On the first day I went they had *sadly* sold out and were in the process of making more. I consoled myself with a caramel pecan butter tart that was delightfully tasty.
I found myself at Yonge and Eg the very next day and decided to try my luck again… success! I bought two of the medium tarts, one with pumpkin seeds and one without, and my roommate and I shared them. They were both fantastic and I will definitely be going back for more.
Aside from the delicious pies there are a lot of other tasty-​looking baked goods displayed in the counter. The layout is very quaint and cute too as the bakery doubles as a home wares store and also has a sandwich/​salad bar right at the back. Another plus… very friendly, helpful staff!

This is one popular place on a Saturday afternoon. It was difficult to squeeze in beside the many families and children and strollers packed inside this little bakery — but when I’m determined to try some sweets, I’ll persevere. We tried: double chocolate cookie, oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, rocky-​road-​esque cookie, chocolate chip cookie, caramel walnut butter tart, and the mini apple crumble tart. When my sweet tooth calls, I listen.
The best of the cookies was definitely the double chocolate. It was a little thicker and chewier than the others, and had great chocolatey flavour. I really liked the texture of the others as well, but they weren’t anything special when it came to flavour. I was actually a little disappointed with the oatmeal chocolate chip because I barely tasted or saw any chocolate in it. The butter tart was great, but the real standout of the bunch was the apple crumble. That thing was sinfully delicious. It was crisp, lots of cinnamon, and the crumble topping was just divine. So good.
All in all, try to avoid it on a busy weekend afternoon, but definitely give it a try!

I was little surprised to see such glowing reviews for Phipps. Granted, it has a cute storefront and 2 tables on the sidewalk (which is great on a nice day) but there are better bakeries in the area.
Coffee is good but get it in a to-​go cup, as I was served a cup with lipstick on it… and the girl was none to perturbed about it (!)
The ginger cookie is quite good, but they don’t seem to sell it any more. Last time they had it, was in packages of 6 and they refused to sell me one. Also, they only sell pans of brownies, no individual squares.
The butter tarts are very sweet (too sweet for my liking.) The lemon shortbread pie was disappointing: the shortbread was not buttery (almost amateurish in execution) and the filling was very synthetic.
While large, the scones are lacking in flavour and texture. The cake slice looked better than it tasted (very average, with the icing far below average.)
Phipps adds character to this small commercial strip, but the treats are for those who like grocery store packaged baked goods.

The staff was really nice and patient when I started to ask her about almost every single baked good they have on display if there is raisins inside. believing me that I am allergic to raisins…
Double Chocolate Chip $.0.99
— it is that good! Crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside…
— it is that good! My boyfriend who never ever want any cookies was trying to steal that from me!
Chocolate Rugulah $ 1.99
— A tad too sweet for me, since it was sprinkled with more sugar
For lunch, the self-​served hot plate area have great selections of pasta, sandwiches and home made soups… it was quite busy when I was there and I could not find an empty table so I just decide to have some sweets to go!
Next time I want to try some of their baked goods and of course more cookies! Smarties cookies anyone?

I really love this bakery. They have a large selection of full-​size cakes, pies, squares, etc and a slightly smaller (but still significant) selection of single-​serve items. My favorites are the chocolate pecan butter tarts (amazing!) and the slices of lemon shortbread pie. Phipps really knows its pastry.
They also have a café in the back with a small seating area and a lunch counter, which serves good and reasonably priced snacks and a selection of hot foods. If you are looking for muffins, they are in the back section, although they are often sold out by noon.
The staff are reasonably friendly. I wish I could say the same for the Avenue Road-​area clientele!

The exterior of Phipps just pulls you in. I was walking along Eglinton after work and peeked inside… tons and tons of sweets. All sweets except for the hard candy is made on site. It’s a shame I didn’t have my camera with me to prove just how many sweets that are offered at Phipps.
This bakery is not limited to sweets; they sell ready made dinners and sandwiches. I had class that night so I bought their fresh hummus wrap. For $ 3.99, you get two big pitas with hummus, red pepper and basil leaves. It was so filling and so good!
If you’re not in a rush, there’s also a little café in the back of bakery. I haven’t experienced dining at Phipps yet, but I want to … soon!

WAY too many choices! Which can sometimes (for me) be a bad thing. I spend more time deciding than eating! This place is kinda all over the place and it has a very quirky feel to it that I really dig. They have a very *healthy* selection of sweets, a salad/​soup station as well they have a fridge and freezer full of pre-​made dinners, dips, spreads, sauces, cakes etc. I think you can even get sandwiches and quiches, but I always go for the sugar.
