Out of this World is A-OK! Housed in the brand-spanking new Bell Gateway Building of CAMH, this café is trying something new and you’ve got to commend them for that. When you think of hospital cafes, it’s usually bland, overpriced, and generic(why is it always pizza, hamburgers and fries?! It’s like they want you to end up in hospital…). Out of this World Café tries to offer more variety and more healthy options. They have a bunch of salads and sandwiches(on your choice of wrap or ACE bakery breads!), plus baked goods and a daily lunch special which is usually $ 5 – 6(e.g. Moroccan chicken stew, bean and cheese burritos… a bit hit or miss, but a good deal overall). They also have hot breakfast items, i.e. your usual eggs, bacon, hash browns, although I have not tried them since I don’t wake up that early! There are plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. I have not tried their espresso drinks — they do face some pretty stiff competition with TAN, Crafted by te aro, White Squirrel Café, etc. so close by. What makes this place different is that they are trying to integrate CAMH’s new buildings into the Queen West West community. We’ll see what happens — most customers are either staff or clients of CAMH, although you could also totally walk-in from the street(it’s like a stand alone café with a storefront facing the street, you don’t have to enter the hospital to get there). The café provides jobs for current/former clients or «consumer survivors» as some identify. This is more of a grab’n’go kind of spot as there are just a few small tables inside, plus some outside. Service is friendly, but a bit slow, so don’t come here in a hurry. But for sure stop by if you’re in the neighbourhood and want a healthy snack(while also helping to fight the stigma of mental illness!).
