History

Established in 2006.

OpenMat was founded by Head Instructor and BJJ Black Belt, Elliott Bayev, in 2006. From humble beginnings as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club, Elliott has built OpenMat MMA into one of the city’s best academies.

Moving into its current home at 593 Yonge St. in January 2011, OpenMat enlisted Muay Thai experts Kru Shawn Cole and Kru Eddie Nobrega to lead its striking disclines, Greco-Roman Wrestling stand-out Val Ostanov to head its wrestling program and fitness guru, Chris Cecile, to lead its strength and conditioning training.

Two years later after expansion, OpenMat now boasts a formidable roster of international BJJ, Muay Thai and MMA competitors.
