New Seaway Fish Market

Just before I planned to make a visit at this store I came across news article from Torontostar stated that this place was shut down by Toronto Public Health for severe rodent infestations.

There are several fresh fish stores in Kensington Market. My favourite fishmonger is Coral Sea Fish Market. But I decided to try to expand my purchasing habits and explore a different store. New Seaway Fish Market looks both well stocked and their selection a bit larger than the regular one I go to.
Although I did not find the salmon filets I was looking for, I did fin rainbow trout. I like that the different fish/​shell fish/​mollusks are clearly labeled. In the case of salmon, different other varieties are found with their source of origin labeled. That is important if that kind of information rules your choice of purchase. It doesn’t mine. But, at least, I know where to go when this becomes critical to me.
From what I noticed, they also have a separate fridge with sushi ready/​grade food. Important to know if you are looking for this. I also noted some round, juicy tuna steaks. I don’t know how to cook them, but when I am ready to risk cooking tuna steaks at home, I will return and ask the fishmonger for his recommendation. I just hope he knows & can share how to prepare it!
I felt comfortable going inside and requesting my fish. Right now, I have only been to 2 of them and I still prefer going back to Coral Sea. I just feel more comfortable and I regularly buy my fish from the same man (an Asian gentleman who is very helpful). I like that sense of community and a sense of feeling safe.

This is my go-​to place for seafood.
I’ve purchased wild-​caught squid, smoked salmon and scallops here. It was all fresh and reasonably priced.
Although I’ve never purchased my own oysters to shuck, this place has a wide selection of oysters for you to pick from.
This is also a great place to go to for sashimi-​grade fish and other Japanese products (get your salmon head AND your miso paste here for a nice soup for dinner!).
Oh, and during Pedestrian Sundays, they set up a booth outside the shop, servin’ up oysters on the half-​shell, grilled squid, fresh prawns and the likes!
I find the men working the store helpful and straight forward.

New Seaway is one of the best places for fish in the city. I have bought fish from them several times, and yesterday got some sushi grade tuna and crab, and some unagi. We made tuna tartare which was absolutely delicious, crab rolls and unagi sushi. All of it was super fresh and good quality. The prices are reasonable too.
The people who work at New Seaway are really nice and helpful. This is my first choice for fish in Toronto.

I stroll down Baldwin all the time but as I am not much of a seafood eater, I generally avoid fish markets and this place was no different.
However.
For Pedestrian Sunday, there was a table set up outside of New Seaway that was selling grilled tuna kebabs for $ 4 and I decided to give it a go. This was one of the best culinary decisions I have ever made. The tuna was amazingly marinated and cooked to the right texture and left me salivating for the next PS.
Maybe one day I’ll even venture inside to see if they sell these year round.
