I am going with 3.5 stars. It’s a delicious Portuguese buffet wrapped in a grocery store wrapped in the goodness of those of the Portuguese origin! It’s pretty nondescript from outside. However, there is a ton of good Portuguese Food inside. It’s name proclaims it as a grocery store, but it’s no ordinary store. It also houses a Portuguese buffet(aka hot table) sold by the pound. The buffet occupies pride of place in the center, with grocery items in aisles around it and an extensive meat counter at the very back. The hot table is extensive, fresh and warm and is a Portuguese food aficionado’s wet dream! Stocking everything from pulled pork to stuffed mackerel to pork and mussel to blood sausage, it’s a pretty amazing sight. Most items are priced differently so the recommendation is to put things into different containers, which makes it easier to price the food. On my first visit I was a bit clueless, since the dishes do not have any name tags, but the guy at the meat counter was very helpful, as were my fellow customers(lots of regulars there). I ended up getting pork and mussels(love it!), grilled mackerel, rice and salad. Plenty of food for two meals for just $ 13! The food felt home cooked and very fresh. The flavors could be heightened a bit more, and the fish charred a bit less! The lady at the cash engaged me in a conversation about Syria, since that’s what CNN was showing at that time. I felt like a regular even though it was my first time visiting. I am glad to have establishments like M and M Fruit N Grocery in Toronto; they bring in their wake, an old world charm to the city.
