(***CASHONLY***) Heather & I came here after giving Osaka Sushi on Bloor W a pass(holy hell they are expensive! 75% or more per menu item than your typical sushi joint, and nothing we saw suggested it was warranted… anyway). JJ is located in a tiny little old house, and it has a nice, casual, cozy feel — there’s even original crown molding and a walled up fireplace. Upon entering, the first thing that hit was a strong smell of tempura frying oil… like, very strong. We really wanted sushi, though, and it was already nearly 8pm, so we decided to give it a try. Anyway, the food! Wakame was good, on par with the better offerings I’ve had in Toronto but nothing exceptional. Miso I will say the exact same thing. We got a nigiri/maki combo of 18pcs, expecting to order more when we finished. Everything on it was tasty, though I did detect that«thawed fish» flavour on a few pieces. So far, I’d say a solid 3 star and good value for the reasonable prices. Still a bit peckish, we ordered a tuna/salmon/avocado roll. It arrived, and we quickly noted the avocado was brown/black, with but hints of not-rotten green… um… ew gross! The loan sushi chef kept disappearing behind kitchen curtains, so we bucked up and picked the nasty avocado out of the rolls, downed the fish, and called it a day. We brought the nasty avocado to the chef’s attention, but he was unperturbed, barely acknowledging the issue. He brought us our bill, and I pointed out I wasn’t very comfortable paying full price for the bad roll.(I also noted that he had a dish of nasty avocado in his display… was he serving it all day? Did he intend to keep serving it?) Though he gave us a refund of the 6.95, we left feeling as though he just didn’t care at all about what he had served us and was at peace charging us for a small but inexcusable offense. That made us wonder how fresh everything else was… was the fish ok? Not a good feeling. I’m torn, and hesitate giving JJ Sushi 1 star only because it kind of has the vibe of a place that could be a cool hangout… but… I don’t know. I feel sorry for them more than anything. I think this is a sympathy 2 stars. Is that wrong?

I was really hoping this would be a hidden gem just a hop, skip, and a jump from home. Unfortunately the sushi is very average in all regards. No frills set up with a friendly staff with decent lunch specials. However I would opt for other choices in the neighbourhood.
