I had no expectations at all when I stopped for a meal at Island Grill. It was a very long day at work and I was too tired to cook anything. I walk by this Jamaican cuisine on an almost daily basis and figured I might as well give it a shot, how bad could it be after all. It it located on the main floor of an old Toronto home, and it definitely fares out about that well on the inside. A lot of work is needed on the walls and floors, but not being a big budget kind of restaurant it is to be expected. At the time that I went the place was pretty empty, actually I can’t remember really walking by and seeing anyone sitting at the few tables that are inside. The lack of people actually surprised me a little bit when I tasted the food. It is probably big for lunch based on the prices and portions, but the food is actually pretty tasty. A lot of smaller places I have been that are similar have not had the freshest food because of the lack of customers, but the food here was surprisingly fresh. The jerk chicken could have been a little spicier, but that is just my personal preference. The rice was a yellow rice and also had a lot of flavour. I was very satisfied by a meal that I figured would be just something to fill me up. Overall it was a good experience and I would recommend it for those who are brave enough to venture into this side of town and like fresh, home cooked Jamaican food.
