When you work nights as a customer service agents getting yelled at by people all day there are few things that can truly make you smile… Until now! It started one Saturday morning a few years ago: an average girl dressed in black walks to the Parkette at Dufferin with two hula hoops in hand. If you are not familiar with the area let me just say that random doesn’t begin to describe Parkdale’s unique flavor! We have a man with a lead foot, an old lady who picks up(and smokes) old cigarette butts, an angry black transvestite who is often found yelling at the McDonald’s staff, etc… With all this, hula girl is different. She walk to the park and immediately begins dancing with the hula hoops. She is not just swinging her hips she is also using her neck, legs and arms… And she does this in silence for hours! Once and a while people will stop as the walk by and watch her other times she Is totally alone and dancing majestically with her props. It looks like a floor gymnastics routine and I’ve never once seen her drop her hula hoop or get distracted by her surroundings. Every time I see her I am forced to smile extra wide because while some kids dream of running away to the circus… I am reminded that I basically work near one!
