Specialties
Hodo Kwaja is a specialty Korean bakery in downtown Koreatown since ’92. Our products are made with Canadian based ingredients, Vegetarian-friendly and No Preservatives. We sell Hodo Kwaja (Walnut Cakes) which come in three types: Red Bean & Walnut, Mashed Potato & Walnut and Mashed Potato & Almond. We also offer Korean Pancakes stuffed with Brown Sugar (with Peanuts, Sunflower Seeds & Cinnamon) or Red Bean, Chun Byung (waffle-like cookies with Almonds, Peanuts or Seaweed, which are seasonal), Red Bean, Fruit and Rice Cake Sherbets (shaved Ice dessert) and Madeleines (sponge cakes made with GayLea Butter & Almond Powder). Our products range from $ 1.50 to $ 19.00.
We bake our Walnut Cakes twice a day: 11:30AM to 1PM and 4PM to 5PM and our Korean Pancakes three times a day: 11:30AM, 3:00PM and 5:30PM (our baking times may vary). At Hodo Kwaja we invite our customers to see our unique, natural gas, cast iron mould machine in motion, which bakes our products.
History
Established in 1992.
Hodo Kwaja was founded by owner Jong Sik Lee with hopes of selling quality baked goods with a part of the Korean culture to Canadians. Hodo Kwaja was the first successful Walnut Cake bakery in Canada. Mr. Lee’s idea of an open concept bakery, by placing the machine in the front of the store instead of the back like previous similar businesses have tried, lead to his success. After trial and error they were able to make a recipe for their now famous Red Bean and Mashed Potato fillings. Over the years Mr. Lee created, customized and added new products to their at first simple menu and it has greatly contributed to their 20+ years of success. Not only did Mr. Lee’s handmade recipes and open concept idea help to his success, it was the amazing word of mouth referrals and loyalty from our customers that made Hodo Kwaja what it is today.
