For The Love of Cake Custom Creations

Went to this place today just after 1:00PM to try something gluten-​free (their website says they have gf available without special ordering in Junior size cupcakes, or full size cupcakes) It was really disappointing when we arrived there (It was not super easy to locate) only to find their counter completely empty. I assumed maybe they keep the goodies in the back? Nope.
The woman who worked at this place sauntered out from the back and immediately seemed annoyed by our smiling/​excited presence. When I told her I was excited to try something gluten-​free she responded with «were out» I asked her if they have made it so the gf items require a special order now, or if they are just out for today. I also mentioned I was asking because it was my first time at this establishment. Her response? «You just came on a bad day»
This establishment has such good reviews with Unilocalers, and I was really excited to try this place as their pictures look amazing, and they seem to take cakes seriously. I was keen to have a new go-​to bakery this close as it is a 5 minute walk from my new place, and in my new neighbourhood.
I have not tried their baked goods yet but I can tell you overall it was highly disappointing. The service person was supremely cold, lacking in energy and unfriendly. She should have at least been a little more descriptive, receptive, caring, lively, or consider offering or recommending alternative bakeries or establishments in the area, or maybe she could have invited us to return when they actually have product to sell? Nope. I saved my check-​in coupon for a free junior cupcake on first visit, I am hoping to return one more time to see if they actually have some product available to try. Can anyone recommend another good gf bakery near to me in Liberty Village/​Parkdale where they bring the gf items and hold the sass? Thanks.

This is an amazing bakery! I have nothing but great things! I live in the US. and this bakery was able to make the cake I wanted, and even went the extra mile for me. Amazing customer service! They were on top of everything and always contacted me as I contacted them. thank you so much Adam!!!

I came here years ago with a friend who had a Groupon for 6 cupcakes at half price.
I remember that we couldn’t even finish the cupcakes we started. They were too dry, the icing was oily and too sweet. Perhaps now that’s changed, but recent reviews tell me likely not.
The «service» sucked. The cashier was not pleasant and spoke in a monotonous tone; providing little help and no suggestions on flavours. She almost didn’t want to accept the Groupon.

This review is for their cupcakes.
I found their selection to be okay considering their price they charged I expected something a bit more extravagent or richer in flavour. Got 2 reg cupcakes (red velvet & strawberry cheesecake) and a mini cupcake (Guiness Chocolate). Wasn’t mind blowing… try if you’re in the area but I wouldn’t go out of my way for the cupcakes.

I love these guys! I tasted most of their cupcakes and had a few birthday cakes from here too. All of them were amazing. It’s like I’ve finally met the shop that makes the cake experience from my day dreams. My favourite cupcakes are: red velvet mini cupcake (sometimes the regular sized one with the chocolate filling can be a bit too much for me), the chocolate raspberry cupcake, the coconut and the maple bacon. Their customer service ranges from depressing to meh but their cakes are so good they can yell at me to GTFO and I’s still be buying cakes from them.

The cupcakes are mediocre. They are a bit dry and the icing is very uneven (both between cupcakes, with some having lots and others having barely any, and on individual cupcakes themselves, with the icing not being distributed evenly).
The cashier put one mini in each space of a regular cupcake package and then balanced a mini between each cupcake space. The result was that the icing smeared all over the place and they looked like crap when I arrived at my friend’s house. Thanks for nothing For the Love of Cake.
With so many great cupcakes in the city, I won’t be back.

When I’m feeling down the man buys me some cupcakes and cake pops from here on his way home. I’ve never stepped foot in the store itself, but I’m sold. Sad to see so many negative reviews since I haven’t had a bad experience with their products — can’t comment on service here.

My new love, especially they have 2-​bite size cupcakes that allows u to have a few without feeling overly full :)

UGH. So wanted to like this place but I was sorely disappointed.
Counter attendant was awkward and standoffish — big no no in any front of house position. No proper greeting, no eye contact (and it’s a small store). I asked if the cupcakes had been baked that morning and he got all shifty… They didn’t taste like it either.

Stale.
2^nd time coming here since a few months ago. Still stale. Still greasy. The cabinet had fruit flies buzzing around. Cake is heavy, filling is gross and not appetizing.
3^rd time, no charm.

We were planning a retirement celebration for a coworker and we knew we wanted a ‘cake boss’ style cake but didn’t have a clue where to go.
I searched the web and found different companies that provided this type of cake and honestly, what made me choose For The Love of Cake was how functional and well put together their website was. I figured, they clearly have their $#!& together.
I spoke with Genevieve and threw some random ideas at her and she emailed me a couple of sample ideas and an estimated quote. I was sold! We finalized the design and off she went! Genevieve was flexible enough to accept a few tweaks I had along the way and on the day of the party, the cake with delivered in all it’s glory.
I was absolutely amazed at how well it came out. It was exactly as I had hoped but better than I expected. I’ve watched shows such as Cake Boss and Food Network Challenge and I’ve seen what can be done but I never expect that a shop in Toronto that I found online would be able to product the same quality of workmanship. It was almost a shame to have to cut into it… ohhh but we did!
I had selected a vanilla cake with raspberry buttercream filing between the layers. The cake itself was quite dense but I would imagine that it needs to be to support the decoration. This filing… oh the filling! It definitely made the cake and actually took away from the density making it a ‘lighter’ cake in taste. Absolutely delicious!
I was very happy with the outcome and would definitely order from her again.

I have bought cupcakes here a few times out of convenience and im not sure why i ever went back. Compared to the other cupcake shops around the city this has to be my least favourite.
Dense and oily, and lacking real flavour is how i would best describe them.
I calculated the cost of buying a half dozen and there isnt even a price break! They claim its cheaper, but thats only because the government doesnt make you pay HST when you buy a half dozen. It really burns me when people try to make it sound like a deal when its not.

Craving some sugar, I tried a salted caramel cupcake from For The Love of Cake the other day and it hit the spot.
The cake part was very moist, the salted caramel had the right balance of salty and sweet and the frosting was more of a French buttercream style — which I prefer over the overly sweet American style — and the ratio of cake to icing was just perfect.
If they were located closer to me I’d definitely stop in again to try out some of the other flavours.

Feeling cheap and craving something sweet, I decided to venture out to FTLOC and redeem my TEAMBUY voucher. I have not been to this location in over a year so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the shop had undergone a few renovations and has also expanded their store into the space next to them. Overall, the look was very nice, clean, and boutiquey. Cupcakes are now lined up on shelves in glass display cases versus in the past they had them just out in the open air. Perhaps this new display case helps better preserve the freshness of the cupcakes and it also looks much more organized this way, a definite improvement of presentation of their products.
One of the owners was there and he was very friendly and greeted us as soon as we walked in. I immediately told him I wanted to redeem my voucher and encountered no hassles at all. Easy peasy.
So far I have eaten 3 of the 12 cupcakes my husband and I purchased with our voucher and my sweet tooth was thoroughly satisfied: the quality of the cupcake was still mouthwateringly good. As good as I remembered it from the last time we had gotten cupcakes from that store. Here is the verdict of the 3 cupcakes I’ve had so far:
Strawberry shortcake: light cake (angel food cake) + whipped cream topping, complemented with sweet strawberry purée filling; a perfect summer treat.
Chocolate hazelnut: for those ferrero rocher lovers that wish to indulge, this cupcake is for you. Moist chocolate cake + chocolate icing filled with chocolate ganache, a hazelnut, and topped with a house made Ferraro rocher inspired chocolate is rich and heavy. Beware if you are not a fan of sweet, sweet things: this treat is not for you.
Cookie dough: vanilla batter was a tad bit dry and dense and I wish they added more chocolate chips throughout the cake but that is just my inner chocoholic speaking. The icing had a distinct cookie dough taste that I love (and some may not)! It was a decent cupcake but not my favourite because the cake part of it was disappointing.
Overall, I still think their cupcakes are pretty effing good, despite what some reviews suggest. Staff was friendly and the products were delicious. I would continue to go to this cupcakery to fulfill my sweet tooth cravings.

Tried: Gluten-​free chocolate peanut butter cupcake.
Flavour: Bursting with flavour. So ridiculously soft. Doesn’t even taste like gluten-​free. Not too sweet. Icing is soft and melts in your mouth. To die for.
Price: $$$ Almost $ 4 for a gluten-​free cupcake, but it’s worth every penny. I’ve tried gluten free cupcakes elsewhere, it’s by far the best.
Customer service: 5 out of 5 stars. The guy chatted, very friendly and prompt.
Buying here all the time.

I was For the Love of Cake for the most recent Iron Cupcake competition they hosted. Their shop is quite cute and nicely organized. I wanted to sample a variety of their cupcakes; I ordered a 6-​pack of their mini cupcakes. Unfortunately, they only had 3 flavours available after a big order was purchase before me. For a 6-​pack of mini cupcakes, it was $ 10 including tax. Not bad, considering it is within the similar price range of other cupcake shops in the city.
Their cupcakes are soft and moist, the icing is average. Overall, it was an above average cupcake.
If you are in the Liberty Village area, it is worth stopping in and trying out their cupcake.
Side note: They make some awesome custom cakes; if you are looking for a cake for a special occasion, For the Love of Cake is definitely a place worth checking out.

A bunch of us Unilocalers came here a couple summers ago for a cupcake crawl. Somehow I missed having a cupcake here and only had a drink so I needed to make a trip back to make a proper review.
After remembering everyone squee’ing over the grasshopper cupcake I decided to give it a shot, though the Guinness cupcake the shop was promoting for St Paddy’s day was enticing.
My cake came in a little individual cup with a lid to protect it from the elements. I gingerly carried it with me over to Panago where I was going to have lunch. Once I ordered my pizza I sat down and popped the top and let the minty scent waft into my nose. I hear your scoffs as you read this, saying to yourself «Dessert first?!». Yeah that’s right, I’m a rebel.
I decided to not take my usual approach by making a cupcake sandwich and just bite in. The cake was extremely moist and almost fell apart in my hands. The icing had a good amount of mint flavour, not overpowering. What blew me away was to get to the centre of the cake to discover a chocolate filling. I’m not 100% sure what it was, but it seemed like a pudding. Delightful.
I wish these guys were a little more accessible and not tucked away in Liberty Village so I could visit more often.

I finally stopped into For the Love of Cake. I’d been avoiding this cake and cupcake shop — their cakes/​cupcakes just never looked or sounded very good to me, and I hate a disappointing cupcake! Well, it was a Saturday afternoon and a cupcake seemed like just the ticket, so I decided to go ahead and try it. I asked the counter person what she recommended, and she said «vanilla or chocolate base?» Oh lord. *deep sigh* I despise cupcake places that use 2 types of cake and just make different «flavours» with frosting. I asked if they were all the same cake, and she said that lemon and eggnog were the only other unique cupcakes. Great, I’ll take one lemon and one eggnog.
On first bite, these cupcakes were dry, mealy, grainy and way more like muffins than cakes. So disappointing. On Sat afternoon, I can’t see these being day old? But they tasted day old. On to frosting — The eggnog frosting was rather tasty, but left my mouth feeling coated and icky. The lemon «meringue» frosting was not good. Second bite, and you get into… mushy goo in the middle of the cupcake? This is the filled cupcake gimmicky thing, and it’s GROSS! The goo was cold and congealed in texture. The eggnog goo was just… no. The lemon curd was absolutely THE WORST LEMON CURD EVER. WORST!!! It was all citric bite and no lemon flavour, like it was made of pure chemicals and nothing good to eat.

I have never been a huge cupcake fan, but my sister has always loved them. From the ones you buy from the groceries store, to the ones purchased from specialty bakery shops… she just adores cupcakes. I’ve always thought that cupcakes were better-​marketed muffins? Kind of like the No Name Brand vs. Kraft? My sister always seemed to enjoy them, even if they were the crappy store-​bought ones.
Continuing on my mission to use up purchased vouchers prior to their expiry led me to For the Love of Cake. I have tried cupcakes from Bobbette & Belle, and The Cupcake Shoppe. The ones from the former wowed me, the ones from the latter, not so much? So I guess you could say that I had mixed feelings about cupcakes.
I had 2 vouchers that were good for half a dozen cupcakes each. I kept a half dozen for me, and gifted the other half.
I ordered:
Red Velvet
Tiramisu
Very Vanilla
Pecan Pie
Chocolate Hazelnut (Gluten-​Free)
Chocolate Banana
The cost of a cupcake is usually $ 2.50 each, which means a half dozen will set you back $ 15.
So how were the cupcakes? Moist and delicious! There is nothing worse than a dry cupcake. The Red Velvet is topped with a light cream cheese icing and to my surprise there was a piece of rich chocolate surprise underneath the cream cheese, just wedged into the cupcake. The Very Vanillahad a buttercream icing, which I didn’t care too much for as I am not usually a fan of buttercream for its lack of versatility in terms of texture. The cupcake possessed a very subtle vanilla flavour to it.
They have a stamp card system. You get one stamp for every cupcake flavour you purchase, and after you have tried all the flavours, you get a free half dozen of cupcakes free! I did the math, this would mean that you would have to have consumed $ 45 worth of cupcakes before redemption… I don’t like how that adds up, both in calories or in dollars.
Verdict:
For the Love of Cake is definitely one of the better cupcake shops in Toronto. Their creations are visually appealing and gastronomically gratifying. From a customer service perspective, the staff were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the girl behind the counter was a bit sloppy and ended up dropping the Lemon Meringue that I ordered with my second Groupon.
It is also worth mentioning that they offer up a line of gluten-​free cupcakes.
One thing I did notice is that their cupcakes are not uniform. The Red Velvet for example was slightly smaller in size with comparison to their other cupcakes. Lastly, their location is probably a hinderance to boosting business as it is located in Liberty Village (close to the CNE), and is a bit out of the way and really not close to anything that one would frequent often.

A solid 4 I think. Genevieve’s dedication to her craft is shown in the inventive and frequently changing menu as well as the «Iron Cupcake» competition she organises. I’ve seen her in action at that and she was full of enthusiasm!
The cupcakes seem to be mainly their 3D cupcakes-bun+frosting+filling. They’re very tasty and I love the flavours she has chosen but I do kind of wish there were more 2D cupcakes. Sometimes all you want is a simple cupcake done really really well. I’ll have to go back and try more of them to give a full assessment. I really enjoyed my PB & C cupcake. I’m not quite so sure about the chocolate ganache filling in the red velvet. I rarely turn down chocolate, but there’s something lovely and fresh about red velvet when it’s not messed with and it’s what I’d prefer.
My biggest test was ordering 24 mini cupcakes for a baby shower. I initially asked a few questions by email and Genevieve was quick to answer. We sorted out the final order by phone. She was very obliging, and in the end I decided on a mix of chocolate, vanilla and red velvet buns with pink and blue frosting. I had 3D decorations on just 6 of them because I was on a bit of a budget! The minis were $ 1.45 each and I think it was $ 3.45 each for the 3D decorations. Total came to around $ 45. I asked to collect them on Saturday and they were ready and waiting when I got there. The frosting on each was perfect and they were exactly as described. We all loved the fondant decorations-​including the 1 year old guest at the shower who thought one of the pacifiers was real and whipped it from the top of a cupcake before running off with it. All in all I think they were a hit!
