Chicken Plus does not come up when you search for roti in the neighborhood, probably because it is one item on a highly eclectic menu that definitely signals Caribbean but also signals high school hangout(burgers, fries, poutine, etc). The exterior is unpromising but I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean little take-out place a few chairs to rest while you wait. Since its the ongoing roti craving that brings me here, I order one chicken and one shrimp so I can compare to their neighbor to the south. First, I like a restaurant that is ok with showing you their food and food preparation. The rotis are smaller than most I’ve had, but what I would describe as a proper serving side. The fillings were FANTASTIC! Flavourful, nice texture and nice spice balance. Next time I would accept the offer of hot sauce, but no complaints here. They only fall short on the roti shell. I learned to eat roti as it was made by the Trinidadian lady that lived next door to the house where I grew up, so I want a feathery texture with those granules of… is it corn flour?.. underneath and a melt in the mouth experience. This is more like Jamaican roti, sort of like a tortilla shell? It was toughish to cut through and I bet something scary would happen to it in the microwave. I have a Jamaican friend who says Jamaicans have no business making roti and I tend to agree this s not our specialty. I don’t know what flag is flying ver the stove at Chicken Plus but they can make me curry anytime and I’ll live with the roti shell to get to it. This type of shell is actually superior if you have to eat the roti with your hands. I would give them 3.5 stars if it was possible but I’ll err on the side of higher praise because I would definitely come back. So far, Chicken Plus wins my highest rating for roti at queen and Lansdowne. The quest continues…

I’m new to the roti world, but in my opinion this roti is delicious. I’ve tried the chicken and goat kinds, and sometimes pay $ 1 extra to add spinach. The food is delicious, prices fair, and the lady always working there is great. Definitely recommended if you’re in the Parkdale area! And cheaper than the several roti places just north on Queen St. W.

This is another one of the roti places in what I consider Toronto’s roti mecca at Queen and Lansdowne. Chicken Plus is a small two-tabled food counter tucked away on Close Avenue, serving up rotisserie chicken plus a bunch of other fast food items, including pogo stick(!) and hamburger specials. This is strictly a review on their roti, which, of all the rotis I’ve had in the city, is probably the least gut-busting size — Goldilocks would’ve been happy. Just right. Their prices reflect this, too, from $ 4 for a plain potato roti to $ 5.75 for the meaty pockets, and an additional $ 1 for each veggie filling added(spinach, channa, et cetera). The roti skin, on first bite, was pretty good, with the texture of a very soft tortilla shell. After the skin cooled, however, it was definitely harder to chew and cut; I suppose the disposable plastic cutlery and foam plates didn’t help matters. The curry filling was nice and rich — maybe a bit on the sweet side, but definitely worth consuming. If there’s one more thing I want to point out, it’s that CP is the cleanest restaurant I’ve visited in a long time, and if ever my food landed on this floor, I would actually consider using the 10-second rule in public for the first time ever.
