Description

Specialties

Ascari Enoteca is a neighbourhood locale where people come to linger over a simple, delicious meal washed down by a superb bottle of wine (or two). Here, you’ll find homemade pastas made fresh in house every single day, plus a wine list featuring well– known varietals from across Italy and more than a few undiscovered gems.

If you don’t leave our restaurant feeling «ciccio», somewhere Alberto will be frowning his disapproval.

Our pastas are made fresh in house, every single day. We change the menu weekly and seasonally.

History

Established in 2011.

In the 1950’s, Alberto Ascari was virtually unbeatable in Formula One. His appetite for food and wine was as legendary as his talent for win– ning, and earned him the nickname, «Ciccio» — Italian for ‘chubby’. Alberto was highly superstitious, and never raced without his trade– mark blue helmet and t-shirt. In a tragic twist of fate, he died in a car accident while wearing the helmet of a fellow racer. On the day of the funeral in Milan, the city fell so silent that the telephones could be heard ringing unanswered.

Meet the Business Owner

Chef John S.

Business Owner

John attended the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan and went on to work at La Caravelle, where he was part of the team that earned the restaurant a three star review in the New York Times.

He moved on to Craft, Tom Collichio’s Gramercy Tavern in the heart of the Flat Iron district. At Craft, John developed the successful business practices and demand for quality that won the restaurant the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in the United States.

After three years in New York, John returned to Toronto where under Chef/Owner David Lee at Splendido he helped developed sophisticated tasting menus.

June of 2008 brought John home to his roots as Executive Chef/Partner at Table 17 creating seasonal driven Southern European menus for the exceptional wine bar and bistro. John and Erik have teamed up once again to bring you Ascari Enoteca named in honour of Formula One racing legend Alberto Ascari who was possess not only extraordinary talent on the track but a legendary appetite.
