As an avid US quilter living near the Canada border, I’ve often been dismayed that a community the size of Vancouver(& vicinity) seems to have so few fabric shops. Add to this the fact that I often run into Canadian quilters at our Bellingham fabric shops and I’m left to wonder: just how sad is the fabric scene to the north? So I’ve recently decided to make a point of checking out quilt shops up this way when time allows. And today, that decision brought me to Wineberry! First off, don’t trust Google Maps when you come here. It will lead you about 2 blocks too far south, which will require extra driving(and a dicey u-turn) to recover from. Instead, trust your instincts and pull into the little yellow-roofed strip mall on the corner and you’ll be just fine. Wineberry boasts being a fabric and yarn shop, but really they are mostly fabric(with a decent selection of specialty yarns for the knitting/crochet crowd). Their fabric selection features not just quilting cottons from many of the well-known fabric houses, but a variety of other fabrics such as flannels and minky too. While their selection is limited by the relatively small size of their store, they do offer something in every category, plus notions and patterns too. Their staff is also very friendly and helpful. Be sure to check out their«fabric by the pound» table in the back, too. I found some good deals on American flag fabric which, not shockingly, is probably not a huge seller in Canada! Found enough to do a patriotic quilt for my mom with a total expenditure of less than $ 15US.
