I’ve mostly been here for the perogy dinners the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary’s(around the corner) puts on the last Friday of each month since probably forever. The perogies are made by church volunteers, real live Ukrainian ladies, and dished up with lots of sour cream and sauerkraut, and cabbage rolls and Ukrainian sausage, if you please. Borscht, cake and coffee, too. It’s a real cheap dinner out, and pretty popular with locals, though the lineup to get in is never too crazy. You pay at the front, then go get your order from the volunteers who man the chafing dishes, and sit at big round shared tables and talk to your neighbours. Everyone is really friendly. They also do takeout and sell frozen perogies and cabbage rolls by the bagful at the front.(They also sell the frozen perogies and cabbage rolls and other Ukrainian goodies every Saturday around noon here.) Delicious and it all goes to a good cause. The neighbourhood is still mucho sketchy(right down the street from Gateway Station) but worth the trek.
