Established in 1988.

The Hockey Shop is a family owned and operated hockey superstore that is located in Surrey, British Columbia. Rod and Ursula Bolivar opened the doors to the original store with their son Chad in 1988, and have never looked back. At the time it was a humble mom-​and-​pop store that also featured the family dog, a yellow Labrador named Goldie.

An entirely new store, three different yellow labs, and a string of renovations preceded the arrival of Ken Whiddington, his son Brad, and daughter Kristie, who partnered up in 2001 and helped bring The Hockey Shop to the next level of service and selection.

March 2011 saw the shop move to a brand new 17,000 square foot retail location, securing it’s place as the largest independent hockey retailer on the West Coast of Canada. With a staff of over thirty-​five hockey specialists, including eight goal specialists and four professional skate sharpeners: We Know Hockey.

I’ve worked at the The Hockey Shop for over 28 years and take a lot of pride in our family business.

Our store is a member of Source for Sports, the largest independent sporting goods buying group in the world. This gives us access to immense buying power and exclusive products made just to our specifications.

A few of my proudest moments in my career include being recognized by Bauer as Canadian Specialty Retailer of the Year in 2014 & 2015. We were also voted by the readers of Hockey Now as the #1 Pro Shop in British Columbia.

A hockey player’s dream store. They have everything, with great staff that have the right attitude.
If you call ahead, make sure they have the stick, skate that your looking for in the size you want. Just be sure to get the name of who is assisting you on the phone.
Helpful cheerful and they know what they are talking about with no intimation.
The best hockey store in greater Vancouver and all of BC for that matter.

Was in there today stood in front of the skates wall for 20 minutes as there was (heavier set) guy that free and walked past me couple times no acknowledgment and only after began baking someone’s skates after they had to go to the cashier to ask for help. When my wife went up to a guy his answer was «we only have one person to fit skates!» I was hoping to hear something more along the lines let me see if I could help you even though this is not my area of expertise. I been playing hockey for ever and just needed to see how the easton Mako fit. Hey shop owners if your reading you know exactly the skates I am talking about as it’s the only easton there you loss that business and any other going forward and I hope people will think twice about shopping here.

No matter where you live in the Lower Mainland, if you’re involved in the sport of hockey, you have to check this place out.
Over 2 incredible floors of Hockey supplies and equipment (for players, goalies, officials, coaches, and even fans of the sport). The product selection width here is absolutely incredible!
Since every player is built differently and has certain preferences, having so many different brands and models in one store in addition to sizes ensures you leave with the best product fit possible (without having to go to multiple sports stores and big box retailers).
Everything about this place is first class: Product selection, price, attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly staff. The prices here are extremely reasonable, and you can save even more money looking through their sale and clearance stuff.
If you’ve never visited here yet, you should definitely check it out the next time you’re in the market for supplies and equipment. You will be amazed and find yourself wanting to keep coming back for more.

Yep, these guys definitely deserve the amazing rating they have on Unilocal.Great customer service. I walked straight to the helmets and stared at the selection and someone right away saw me and asked if I needed some help. I said I was interested in the Bauer 4500 helmet and cage combo and he tried that one on in 2 sizes and we proceeded to try on about 5 different helmets until we found one that was a perfect fit for me head shape. He put the cage on and adjusted the straps a bit. Also gave me a discount (as if I had purchased a combo).
Also helped me get some gloves and two new sticks and butt ends installed on them. The prices are already as cheap or cheaper than anywhere else and then he gave me a bunch of discounts on everything at the till.
Oh, and they are open until 9pm on Thursday and Friday.

Awesome customer service. Great selection. I bought a 20k set of pants, the suspender buttons ripped out. Took it in and they offered to repair, they took it away for 5 minutes and then they offered to do a straight swap with a new pair. I decided against that and they even offered a different pant, which I agreed.

This is THE place to buy hockey related goods, and by far the best place if you ask me. I didn’t know they moved to a new location, but it’s beautiful. They fixed up my helmet no questions asked, I was missing a clip for a cage helmet. Gave me clips free of charge, shorted my stick, no questions, asked, just asked me were I wanted cut. No sales pressure staff. I even made one guy who was busy fixing up goalie gear come show me were is a specific item. top notch service.
Price range… well… hockey is not cheap sport… lets put it that way… no doubt… but what sets them apart from their main competitors across the lower mainland I think is their service and their selection.

Best hockey store anywhere. We drive from Seattle when we need just about anything hockey related, but anyone needing new gear or skates should definitely make the trip. All of the staff go through a ton of training to learn how to ‘fit’ customers into the right skate. Avoid the ‘Bauer bump’ and take the time to get fitted!

Have been going to the hockey shop for 20+ years. I used to love going there on a Saturday with my dad to get our skates sharpened. While we waited I would cruise around the store trying everything on and dreaming for stuff I would ask Santa for Xmas.
I think the store has a great ambiance and the staff which still has a few of the original employees I remember are friendly and knowledgeable. On the downside I miss the used skate section they used to have. For someone who, like me would grow at least a skate size every season as a youth it really helped with the parents wallet.
To conclude I would love to thank the hockey shops staff for being friendly and professional throughout my years as a customer. And a big thank you to rod who always treated me like a VIP when me and my dad would come in.

Staff: nice guys that know their stuff. Also, they have enough staff to help you so you’re never looking around to find someone.
The shop itself would give the Nike store a run for it’s money in terms of setup and design. Just a nice place to be in, even during the summer heat waves.
Prices: they price match internet prices! Good game…
For you goalies out there, they offer a pad demo program where you can use new demo pads for 2 weeks, then return them. At this point, you can get a full refund, try another pair of pads or buy new ones! I genuinely hope no one abuses this program because it’s awesome.
No longer do I need to go to the states to pick up gear I bought online. The hockey shop is your best bet, hands down.

The Hockey Shop is a terrific place to get your gear.
No, I don’t play hockey, but I was with my husband everytime we visited. First of all, their service was great. The staff were knowledgable and will assist you in locating the items that you’re looking for. Second of all, the prices were comparable to the lowest prices online. And lastly, they allow you to use their demo gear for 2 weeks before committing to buy. You do need to put a deposit down, but I don’t know any other place that would let you do that.
Consider checking this place out if you’re just picking up hockey for the first time or needing to upgrade your gear.

Why would I drive all the way out to Surrey for my gear?! I was intrigued by their big Breakaway hockey sale. I could easily go to Sport Chek but I was curious to see their higher end gear and wanted to get fitted properly for new skates.
I’m not bashing Sport chek and they’re great for what they are but the skates I bought from them last year were too painful to wear for more than a few minutes. This was a major purchase for me, so I needed the expertise of someone who really knows hockey.
Brandon was friendly, knowledgeable and patient with me. He took the time to measure my feet properly and I found out I’ve been wearing the incorrect size and width for years. I tried on 4 pairs of skates before deciding on their SMU Easton’s. I spent a bit more than I wanted but they were on sale and they fit so nicely.
Somehow, I picked a up a pair of new elbow pads, jersey and shorts and was way over budget but I ended up happy! The problems I had with the equipment have been resolved quickly.
The regular prices are a bit higher here but if you’re looking for a shop that carries gear with a higher level of protection and performance, this is the place to go!

Great place to go for everything hockey. Huge selection and much of my gear I purchased from here. All the staff I’ve talked to have been very knowledgeable in the sport and stuff they sell.
