Very disappointed. I ordered the Teriyaki beef and rice. Very stringy beef, and the rice was dreeenched in sauce. It was edible, but won’t be coming her again. I also tried some sushi. I’ve never before had sushi with DRY seaweed on it. And I mean dryyy. Made Edo Japan look like a 4 star restaurant.

So this was an awful place. First of I come for fast sushi. If I wanted a half hour wait I would go to a better sushi joint. Sashimi was overpriced and onion cake was over done. I have never given a 1 before so I feel kinda bad but I wont return

If you’re in the mood for fast-food Maki, rice or noodle bowls, and other usual offerings, this is a pretty good solution. Although it’s a chain, I’ve found that quality varies so don’t judge the whole shebang by any one storefront. This St Albert location is a fair example of their food, although it can still deviate by who’s on shift when you visit, which can be disappointing. I like their rice bowls with either teriyaki beef or chicken, and if you order double meat it can actually feed you and a child quite well. Maki is good for fast-food standards, but they are sadly chintzy about providing much wasabi or ginger, and often our takeout boxes will not have any even when we specifically request it and they PROMISE it is included. I highly suggest opening the boxes before you leave and then making a second request! I have no idea why this is a constant issue, but unfortunately it happens over and over. There are also bento boxes, stir frys, green onion cakes, sushi … it’s a good amount to choose from and is quickly ready to eat.

Why do I keep coming back here? I guess once upon a time when I was new to Maki, I thought Tokyo Express was pretty good and I did quite enjoy their salmon bowls with the sesame sauce. However, my last 3 or 4 visits here have been subpar — times overcooked, not fresh, and altogether incorrect. On my most recent visit here, I ordered a Maki combo to bring home to hubby and a Salmon bento box to share with my toddler. Upon arriving home and distributing the meal, I discovered that the sauce was left off the salmon in my bento box so it was essentially a steamed piece of salmon on white rice. Ugh… I tried to eat it but it was so bland. So I hopped back in the car, headed back down to Tokyo Express, waiting in line behind 8 people to advise of the situation. Their response — to hand me a cold little tartar size cup of sauce to take home? WTF?!? Seriously?!? First of all, by the time I reheat that little cup in a microwave safe container I’m going to have about 1 tbsp of sauce of my meal. Secondly, my salmon is now cold and reheated salmon is a no-no in my books! I could tell they weren’t going to cook me a new piece of salmon and I didn’t feel like having a tantrum at Tokyo Express so I asked if I could have a 2nd mini tartar size cup of sesame sauce of my salmon to which they wanted to know WHY? Seriously… Yep, seriously! So I explained that by the time I reheat it in another container at home there won’t even be 1 full tbsp for my now cold salmon. They discussed it amongst themselves for a minute and and then brought me a second mini cup of cold sauce. No apologies — nothing. They acted almost as though I was inconveniencing them by expecting my food to be as pictured. Sigh… If I go back again, it’s my own fault!
