Hiko Sushi

Awesome sushi, I would go as far as saying the best I’ve had in Richmond.
My wife and I always get the same order once a week on our sushi night — Alaska Roll, spicy tuna roll and cream cheese — salmon– avocado roll. Always consistently excellent.
Friendly couple that own the restaurant are always welcoming and thankful for my business. Seating is kind of limited so if you have a large group you may have the place to yourselves.
They also give a generous discount on take out orders.

hiko sushi is a small little restaurant in the corner of Broadmoor. It is owned by a very rude Chinese couple that talks bad about you in their mother tongue. I have bought takeout, delivery, and have eaten in, and if it weren’t for their slightly-​better-​than-​average sushi for a cheap price, their costumer service is terrible. They served us like they were doing it against their will, and they endlessly complain about working (in Chinese). I have just received my order at 9:17pm, after placing a delivery order at 8:01 on the phone. We called them 3 times to ask about the delay (i live 3 blocks from the restaurant) and they kept saying they were on their way. The 2 stars given is for the food they make, but when it comes to costumer service, i only wish that Unilocal would allow negatives stars.

Really good sushi place !! Chicken teriyaki rolls are really yummy. Prices are good for what you would get! The place is always busy so that’s a good sign !

This is the worst Japanese restaurant I’ve been to.
Sashimi tasted like it came from the freezer, milk tea was so sweet and powdery. Miso soup was salty. The soy sauce seemed that they added water.
I’m never going back.

I am concerned about hand washing after handling money. Both the chef and waitress handled cash, and there was no sign that either took time to wash their hands.
It was very slow service on the night we went. Nice people, but the sushi was pretty tasteless. The California roll was the worst I have ever had. Tasted like it had been frozen.

Best miso soup, hands down. I had the ‘B’box which includes chicken teriyaki on rice, 3 gyoza, 8 piece California roll, green salad with house dressing, and the aforementioned miso soup. Came to $ 10.25 with tax. It was made fresh while I waited. It was good and because it’s close to work, I’m sure it’ll appear during my lunch hour again.
For dining in, the restaurant is super tiny so don’t go expecting to host a huge dinner!
Location: it’s tucked ALL the way in the corner past Starbucks so don’t dispair if you don’t see it right away!

My Thoughts:
I really wanted to like this place, and sat down feeling excited for my meal. Despite the many positive reviews, my experience was contrary and I was incredibly unimpressed and disappointed with the overall experience.
The restaurant is very small and is run only by two people, presumably the owners of the join. Although I tried to be understanding that it’s a very small business and only two people are working, from what I saw Hiko could not handle more than two tables of customer. Furthermore, the lady and the chief did not coordinate well and service was quite frustrating.
I was quite unhappy with when they mixed my oyako don order with the table next to mine. Furthermore, they served the same dish to me after realizing their mistake and without any apologies. Granted the neighboring table did not actually eat the food and only dug around my oyakodon, it was still quite unappetizing and I couldn’t eat it right away (packed it to go and finished it as a late night meal).
On top of the poor service and experience, the food itself was really mediocre. OH, and their bubble tea is terrible. Very sweet, powdery, and just not worth it, considering you are in Richmond and you can easily get something so much more delicious.
Nothing impressive nor particularly cheap (ordered an oyakodon, terriyaki chicken udon, added extra for a bubble tea, and a roll to share and spent $ 30+). Much rather go to Aki Restaurant or even Osaka Today. Will not be going back.

The sushi was quite good here, and they have generous portions. We ordered the spicy combo, which consisted of spicy tuna + salmon rolls, plus a dynamite roll. They were delicious. However, if you are in a hurry, I wouldn’t recommend coming here. It’s a 2-​person run restaurant, and service is slow. It took a while to get water/​tea, and for the food to come.

Hidden gem in this Broadmoor plaza, hard to find if you’re familiar with the area. the odd time i’m down this far south in Richmond, will i make a drop-​by, esp if i need to shop at the Safeway here.
Their spicy sashimi got some real kick, guessing owners could be from Szechuan, an area known for it’s hotness in cuisine.
Normally, I’m not as generous for non-​Japanese operated, but it’s good value overall.

This place was very good! Just wandered in, and I was impressed by the quality of the food, prices and service.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in town. Decided to try it on a friends recommendation as the «only Chinese-​owned Japanese place I’d order from.»
Tried ordering the beef teriyaki burger but they didn’t have any left. Ended up going for salmon sashimi, dynamite roll and seafood pizza. Salmon was tasty, good quality. Dynamite roll was really filling. Had a lot of avocado and just the right amount of mayo/​tobiko and the prawn tempura was perfect if not just a little too much batter. The seafood pizza was awesome, lots of seafood, batter was crisp and not soggy, and topped off with those fish/​squid flakes. Only downside was the pizza took a little while to cook probably cuz they had to make it fresh. Prices are reasonable, about $ 21 for the meal.
