Went for an early dinner with some friends. The Gyoza’s were nice, Edamame was good, Sushi/Sashimi was decent. Overall it met expectations.

This is a review for their stone bowl and their special sushis. I ordered the river roll and the unagi stone bowl and the total came up to be 24+ the river roll was visually appealing and it was tasty as well. However, the stone bowl did not live up to our expectations. It had a huge load of rice and I pretty much only got two small pieces of unagi and that’s 13.95 which was not worth it. It felt like I was just eating rice with soy sauce on it. The service was terrible as well. We walked in and stood for 5 minutes without being seated, we even said excuse me for a bunch of times to the workers but they ignored us or did not acknowledge us at all. The ambiance of the room was nice however. I thought there would be ramen due to the other Unilocal reviews but there weren’t any ramen choices. Overall, the place was pricey and I would not go there again. Better luck going to all you can eat Korean barbecue downtown.

It was a pretty impressive experience. Just went in for a quick dinner, and was assaulted with a double tuna sushi with a rock bowl rice n beef. Still recovering :)

Came here a couple days ago on a weekend for lunch. The restaurant was about half full. Even though the chefs behind the counter saw us, we were never greeted by them or had someone help or seat us for a good awkward minute. They have fairly decent lunch combos were you pick an item each from two separate lists and a miso soup for $ 9.95. I chose the mini chirashi don and gyoza. It didn’t seem like it was enough food for me, but it actually was. So the extra side order of rolls had to be packed to go. The rice for the chirashi don was surprisingly good. They used sushi rice or something and not your typical white rice. The sashimi unfortunately tasted a little bit frozen. The gyoza were typical gyoza, nothing really to mention here but you get four of them. What I really enjoyed was the«Golden Roll» which is basically a deep fried California roll. I find this place had the perfect ratio of deep friedness to California roll, so I can still actually taste the roll. A lot of ones I’ve had in the past was deep fried so much, I could not taste anything else. Service was okay. I think there was only one server working the entire floor. But what really won me over was the speed of the food coming out. I was really hungry, but the food came out quickly and in succession so I wasn’t too overwhelmed with everything coming at once. Overall I would give this place a 3.5, but Unilocal doesn’t do half stars so it gets rounded up to a 4! PS: Parking is definitely a hit or miss here. Avoid dim sum time.

Used to be the only place for good«special rolls» but with so many new sushi places now open, its expensive for what you get. Their hot foods like the udon and stone bowls are better but oily. Chinese run and poor-mediocre service with huge slabs of tasteless rice make this a not worth returning kind of place.

Team Food Soc came here for lunch and I had the following: Agedashi Tofu($ 5.95) Ika(Squid) Karaage($ 6.95) Tonkatsu(Deep Fried Pork) Curry(~$ 11) The Agedashi Tofu came on two dishes separating the tofu from the sauce. I’m not sure the reason for this because I ended up having to dunk the tofu into the sauce for a longer period of time for it to really soak through. It had an average taste to it with its soft tofu and chewy soaked tempura skin. The Ika Karaage was a little more interesting. It was lightly deep-fried and had a chewy interior. The mayo sauce was great for dipping and the included lemon added a sour zing to the dish. Overall this was much more exciting to have than the Agedashi Tofu for only a dollar more. The main treat of the meal came in the form of the Tonkatsu Curry. There was enough curry sauce to swirl the rice in and the tonkatsu had a crispy exterior that munched well with the spiced curry sauce. I thought it was interesting that the tonkatsu was fried to such a light colour; I usually see it a wooden brown colour. The crunch was the same in the end so it didn’t really matter.

Japanese BBQ& Sushi is always a good idea in my mind! Service is quick and friendly and food is delicious! We didn’t even have to wait long before our orders started flying out! If you have a big group prepare to order a lot! Their portions for the Japanese BBQ is pretty small. Our group ordered the Indian, Rainbow and the Crunch roll and they were all delicious! I highly recommend trying out the Mentaiko Yakiudon, my first time having pasta like udon with baby salmon roe on top and it quickly became a favorite of mine. Will definitely be back!

Great place! Service is good and the food is amazing. Some of the best specialty rolls in Richmond. Definitely worth a visit but be sure to call ahead as it is small and gets busy quite often.

I went to Charcoal on Thursday night with 2 friends. I had a hankering for some Japanese food and no one could think of any outstanding Japanese restaurant in Richmond so we settled on Charcoal. I’ve been here a few times. I guess it’s ok. Certainly nothing that really stands out. We went with the sushi(not the Korean BBQ). Charcoal offers an assortment of fancy rolls: Dragon Roll, Seaweed Roll, Rainbow Roll, … So on. They are all good but nothing stands out and shakes you! I do have one good recommendation… Don’t order the Saba Fish! It’s terrible! I’ve had Saba Fish here previously and it was good so we ordered it. It was the Panzo Saba fish… It’s served rolled up in a little ball in the middle of some cucumbers and some salty fish sauce… too salty and fishy tasting! We did not like it! Previously it was made the traditional way. Simply grilled. I prefer the grilled version! Ok yeah… Charcoal is ok, but I just keep lamenting that I don’t know any really good Japanese restaurants in Richmond(oh actually I do know of a good(great) Japanese restaurant in Richmond… Hachi! It’s pretty awesome!).

Korean BBQ and sushi is always a good mix. And here is a nice example of a place that does things pretty well. We ordered some beef to BBQ and its as you expected. Then slices, with a light marinade. It works. The roles were pretty elaborate, per Vancouver standards. If you come from somewhere else, its worth a try. They are tasty and run around $ 10. I think the dishes outside of sushi and BBQ is where Charcoal gets to flex their creative muscles. Fireballs were deep fried crab balls with avocado. The menu photo looks a lot bigger than their actual size. But they were really delicious. It should be a super bowl snack. The Kobe beef stone bowl was also pretty good. Hot and mixed textures due to the cooking process. But I will say ground Kobe beef seems sort of a waste. Other items on the menu(not ordered) was dried blow fish and fried acacado(good repurposed use of existing ingredients in the kitchen). Menu is pretty extensive. Negative points for the back seat layout. You’re next to the storage room and woman’s washroom. Unless you’re into that. I would come back with friends, for the food.

Charcoal is a decent sushi joint and it’s fun to eat here with several friends for lunch since they have a great $ 9.95 lunch special! You can choose 2 items(from two separate lists) and when you’re with a bunch of people, a huge variety of food can be shared! Anyways, the yakisoba, rice bowls and sushi are all pretty decent and taste fine for the price. The location is very good since it’s situated in the heart of Richmond, right across from Richmond Centre. I still haven’t tried their BBQ yet but I may do so in the future! I would definitely give them 3.5 stars.

I came with a friend during the week for lunch. They have lunch specials where you can order 2 items(one from the A menu, one from the B menu) for $ 9.95. I ordered a gomae salad and chicken katsu curry. Generous portions, but the food was only okay. Both the salad and the curry may have been overly saucy for my liking. The service was only okay, too, mostly because I like my hot tea refills and I wasn’t gettin’ any. Seems to be a popular lunch spot so expect a wait at this time.

I haven’t been to Charcoal sushi for almost 2 years now! I came back today and they still got it! I was not disappointed at all. In fact, the food quality and presentation are amazing ! You could tell that a lot of effort is put into the food presentation and I always appreciate that!!! I love everything I ordered –hamachi, salmon sashimi seaweed wrap, the maple and supreme rolls. I would definitely order the salmon sashimi and hamachi again! It was very fresh and I can taste the freshness! I would say charcoal has one of the best Japanese fusion food in Richmond!

This place is a great little sushi and(asian) BBQ joint in the heart of Richmond, The food is fantastic and consistent. I’ve not tried the BBQ but the sushi rolls and the udon is always fresh, well made, and really tasty. I reccommend you try the bacon yakiudon at least once along with one or two of their specialty rolls. Oh and as another reviewer mentioned, the photobook menu is definitely handy!

I love this place and frequent it often when I am in Vancouver, regardless if I am staying near it. First off, its just fun to cook your own food… also makes for a nice ambiance. The sushi is good and the fish is fresh. I am not a sushi buff, but I will say I’ve had better sashimi tuna in other restaurants, not sure if its the type of tuna or the grade. On a side note the sashimi is thick and well cut for the price. I would recommend getting some bbq items and sharing — fun and tasty! They also have a photo book menu. No names or descriptions, just pictures… like what you see and feel adventurous, then order from the photo book!

Throughout my visit in Richmond and Vancouver, Charcoal is by far my favourite restaurant. The service is superb and the food tastes freshly cooked; I highly recommend their signature Charcoal sushi roll. I’ll definitely be coming here again in the future.

This place is hidden upstairs next to London drugs(and Empire Seafood). Small restaurant and can get pretty busy around the expected dinner time. Serving up fusion Japanese/Korean food I’ll have to say that this is one of the better fusion places out there. They have a good variety of dishes so you won’t get bored only eating sushi. I personally like their appetizers and usually just fill up on them. Skip the ramen or udon. Not too good, the broth is watered down and is usually too generic for my liking. Sushi is okay, I think there is too much rice and their fish quality isn’t all that great. I’m just a person who doesn’t like BBQ or hotpots so I stay away from them. According to my friends who adore these Korean delicacies, they say its passable(but not as good as authentic Korean places). Sevice is very spotty — one of those eat and go restaurants. we are in Richmond so I don’t expect much anyways.

On my last review only rated for 2 stars, it probably we ordered the food wrong. We came back here for lunch and ordered much more food to try, it was much better for more varieties. Besides the lunch combo, it has a album menu on the table. The pictures are so pretty and food quality much better than combo. Seaweed and jelly fish salad — a bit sour, Japaneses sesame oil so good and very tasty. Deep fried pork chop salad — salad was fresh and pork chop was crispy. Goyoza was ok. Chicken ramen — the pieces of chicken so small and ramen was quite soft. California roll — nothing special and crab meat was tasteless. Big roll and salmon tempura roll — Very nice and crispy. Tobiko Udon — Butter with tobiko was cooked and udon was soft.

After coming here for dinner and then reading other Unilocaler’s reviews about their lunch special option, I needed to come back. I thought their selection in choice combinations for their lunch special for $ 8.95 was pretty good. There were ‘entrée’ choices of udons, dons, and salads and appetizer choices of rolls, salads, and gyozas. I order the chicken udon with wakame salad. They gave a pretty big portion of the salad but it dry and not saucy enough — I like it saucy. haha. The chicken udon was quite delicious. The broth was rich in flavourful(wasn’t very salty either), the chicken was soft although there wasn’t much given, but it was enough for me. A different touch to this bill of udon was the addition of Chinese cabbage, which you don’t see much in other udon bowls — I love me some extra fiber! Overall, another good experience at Charcoal!
