Mill Pond Park

Mill Pond park is a great place for a stroll or to go biking with kids. The park is really beautiful and you can see white swans and many different birds. In summer, they had family concerts on Thursdays, some of them were really good such as Chicago Transit and Paul McCartney tribute bands. This is one of our favorite places in Richmond Hill, the park is a nice oasis where you can rest from urban madness.

My girlfriend and I do a lot of hiking and sight seeing, so we’ve both seen a lot of the beautiful outdoors. This is a nice pond, but there are a lot of nice ponds around every neighbourhood, and this one is not that unique or particularly picturesque. I actually like the smaller, less crowded Rumble Pond Park located nearby to the west. We were there Saturday, August 22.

There is no listing for Rumble, so I’ll elaborate here. There is a very nice, large gazebo that is above your average park Gazebo and a small island in the middle of the pond connected by a scenic bridge. I think it is more romantic than the other park. If you are into photography, this place has more potential. The only downside is it is small. In some parks, you feel immersed in nature, bit here, with the road being so close and the noise of traffic.

A true hidden gem in Richmond Hill… although all the locals seem to know about it and appear to be trying to keep it a secret from outsiders.
Sure, the place can be covered in goose droppings at times… and it can be crowded on a beautiful night or on a sunny day… but the allure of the pond and the naturalized shore is spectacular.
Grab an ice cream, sit under a tree, think back to when you were a kid and hadn’t a care in the world… this is what this place is all about.

Richmond Hill puts on a great musical line up for the summer at Mill Pond. Last night was Dream Girls with music from Tina Turner and Diana Ross, Gloria Gaynor.
The park was jammed with people enjoying the warmth of the hot summer night and good music. Food was available for purchase from M& M’s, Tim Horton’s to name a few.
People get there early in order to get a good spot. Others go for walks along the pond and when the music starts everyone wants to dance.
The music line up goes from the month of July to end of August featuring many different artists and local talent. The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Well worth the drive out. Check out the Richmond Hill Guide to see what the line up is for the remaining weeks of summer.

Mill pond holds many events throughout the year. As a volunteer for the Town of Richmond Hill, I can safely say this park is probably one of the most crowded. If you live by, I would highly recommend going on the town’s website and check out when their next event is.

Mill Pond is an absolutley beautiful place to take a romantic walk, sit and watch the sunset or just converse with one or two friends. The trails just north of the pond are brilliant and worth walking through solely for the scenery. My one complaint is that when large abundances of people come to skate and play hockey in the winter, people with social anxiety (such as myself) will find themselves prohibited from going anywhere near the pond. Aside from that though, this is a very nice place to visit.

Thank goodness for Unilocal or I would have never found this park.
As I have moved out of Markham, I’ve been looking for a similar park to Unionville Main Street and I’ve found the spot!
Not as big as Unionville but still a great park and nothing beats pond skating.

I must echo the reminiscent sentiments of my hometown pal Mike S, on the nostalgia factor that Mill Pond Park brings about in any local kid who grew up in Richmond Hill over the years. It’s one of the few central locations that is a great spot for kids and families all year round.
By summer I can recall visiting with my family and playing for hours on their park, stopping for a packed lunch in the shade of the many trees above and around and sneakily feeding the crust of my sandwiches to the eagerly awaiting Geese and Ducks (also known as Richmond Hill vultures).
Once I was a bit older, this was a place where you could ride your bike through or to with your pals and maybe even cause a little mischief (but not too much). Heck I’m pretty sure a teenage version of myself got a kiss from a pretty girl here one night. Yep!
As the year turns to Winter the pace at Mill Pond Park doesn’t diminish. The Geese fly away and they’re replaced on the pond by hundreds of people skating and playing pond hockey. This was always something to look forward to by Winter, that and the annual Richmond Hill Winter Carnival. The town pulls in trailers that allow you to safely change in and out of your skates and the maple syrup served on snow was always a welcome treat.
Possibly my favourite time of year here is Fall. The trees begin to change colour and on a crisp, clear day their reflection on the pond is a thing of true beauty. Walking the path around the pond is a great date idea (trust me fellas… I know).
All this being said no matter the time of year, this is one of the best parts of Richmond Hill, my hometown, and I invite you to come see it for yourself some day.
