Cosmo Music — The Musical Instrument Superstore — has already been declared by many to be one of biggest and best musical instrument retail stores in the world; providing sales, service, rentals and lessons for all types of musical instruments in a one-​of-​a-​kind, world class facility.

History

Established in 1968.

Cosmo Guitars, a small business started by Tom Hebert, began in 1966 importing guitars from Italy and Japan; a forerunner for the first Downsview location 1968.

From there it was obvious that retail was what Tom enjoyed; he stopped importing guitars and opened a small music school and store. 1971 and 1985 saw Richmond Hill moves and a growth in brass and woodwind sales, rentals and repairs to address the lack of school band service in the area, and the start of The Cosmo School of Music. A Brass & Woodwind Centre opened in 1990; Ontario’s leading provider of instruments, accessories, repair and ever growing rental fleet (now well over 10,000 instruments).

The dream of the Cosmo Team has always been to create the world’s most exciting and interactive music making environment. In the spring of 2008 this dream became a reality when both locations amalgamated into one giant store. Cosmo Music — The Musical Instrument Superstore opened its doors on May 22, 2008.

I can’t speak for the brick and mortar store, but the online store is terrible. They claim to sell only products that they can ship quickly. I canceled my order after waiting 28 days. Their customer support is the worst I’ve experienced. Don’t try to call, you just get asked to email instead. Emails just get half-​arsed responses, if and when they do. Expect responses a week later. They claim to price match 30 days after the purchase, but will find an excuse not to. I wasn’t even in a hurry to get the guitar I paid for in full, but the poor customer support, slow response times and blatant lies, made me realize my money could be spent better elsewhere.

Guitars Guitars and More Guitars!
Cosmo Music is for music lovers looking for any instruments. But their guitar selection is just so awesome with the wall to ceiling guitar display. I like the idea that you can try them all out before getting something you like. They have private rooms set up with various amplifiers for that purpose. And of course if you are a guitar player, you would not be happy to just own one of those babies!
I like how the store is divided up into different sections/​departments with dedicated sale representatives and you can just find everything you need without looking around.
And even a coffee shop right inside the building?! I do wish the coffee place has similar hours as Cosmo Music itself.

This place is like being in a mall for music!
You walk in theirs a coffee shop in the middle and stores along the sides. They even have a music school on the second floor. They carry Piano, brass, guitar and so much more! They even have a book store, gift shops and more!
The guitar section is to die for!
Two floors of guitars what more could you ask for! My boyfriend is a musician and we walked out of there with a brand new IBANEZ guitar which they helped is finance!
If your looking for a gift or your a musician this place is great! They have everything you need!

Cosmo music is the best place to shop at! The staff are all knowledge and always make sure we’re happy with our purchases. All of the people that work here are very helpful, but we mostly deal with Rob in the guitar section, and he’s great! I would definitely recommend any and all musicians to check this place out!

helpfully staff. I walked in there not knowing a thing and walked out with an instrument for my daughter plus information on how to care for the instrument as well as private and group classes that they offer. fair prices for a brand new instrument. they also offer used instruments. Staff takes the time to understand your needs before you purchase and committ to anything. there’s technicians available who can repair your instrument. the layout of the store is awesome with a coffee shop and snack bar. a second floor where all the studios are. can’t wait to go back!

Amazing service, fair prices, great selection. I bought a guitar case from there that didn’t end up fitting my guitar due to the case having some broken latches, went back and was out in 5 minutes with a new case that worked just fine. Didn’t even have to go through customer services or the cash.

After an extensive search for a music shop North of the City, I was pleasantly surprised to discover Cosmo Music, conveniently located in Richmond Hill. Upon arriving at the location, I was even more amazed by the vast amount of assortment of instruments, the attentive service and how passionate the staff are about music!
My main goal was to pick up a ukelele as a gift and throughout my whole experience in this «music mall», I left with a complete education about the instrument. The gentleman that was helping me was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about both guitars and ukelele, his enthusiasm was contagious! Very impressive selection of both instruments — too many to choose from!
As someone who has taken music lessons for 12 years, I would have loved to attend classes in this inspiring space, surrounded by so many music enthusiasts.

How can you spend nearly an hour looking at guitars in a music store and not once have a salesperson even acknowledge your existence, let alone try to help you — or god forbid — get you to buy something?
Well, Cosmo seems to to have perfected that level of crappy customer service. And in the «cheap» guitar area — there’s one, maybe two stools you can use to actually try the guitars you might be interested in buying. If those are in use, too bad I guess.
And then when we went to buy something (guitar strings and picks — no way I’m buyin a guitar here after this shopping experience) it took like 15 minutes to get through the interminably slow checkout line.
And their harmonica selection sucks too — unless you’re looking for an A C or G keyed harp.
The only thing that keeps this from being a one star review is that they seem to have a HUGE selection of instruments, and you can pretty much play whatever you want in the expensive guitar rooms (no salespeople to be seen up there). And when I wandered through the woodwind section they actually had a salesperson ask if I needed help.
But unless they carried something that I couldn’t get anywhere else, there’s no way I’d ever shop here again.

If there was a heaven, and it was for musicians, this would be it. It’s a mini mall of instruments! Instead of stores they are instrument rooms! I love this place. And the prices are great! Ibanez s1xxv 25th anniversary is $ 999.99 retail can find it for $ 50-​$ 100 cheaper at some music shops. Here it is $ 649.99!!! That’s an amazing deal! just an example of course, but I found a ton of amazing deals here. And they have thousands of instruments best part is because it’s a bit out of my way. Their website ships anywhere in Canada for free! If the order is over $ 99. Which usually happens lol. I would live there if I could. I love it. If you don’t see what you want their warehouse will probably have it. Just ask.

I would call this place the music equivalent of a Sport Chek. Being used to small, often crammed & dusty boutique music shops, I was pleasantly surprised by Cosmo’s spacious, clean & brightly lit one shop stop for all things music. The store functions like a mini-​music mall, with an atrium & specialty shops for brass, string, piano & sheet music. There’s even a coffee shop & music studio. Customer service is pretty good, with more employees on hand than required (I went during non peak hours).
The only downside is that the store is located kind of in the middle of nowhere (north of Major Mackenzie, away from major shopping areas), but it’s located off of Leslie, which is close enough to the 404, so it’s not too bad.

If ever there was a music store amusement park, this might be it!
The store’s (and I use ther word «store» loosely — this place was a small community) layout is broken down into their own, glass-​doored, sound-​proof rooms, each section with their own exterior design to set it apart from the other sections that almost warrants me to review each on its own (but the lobby is where the check-​out is thus reminding me this is one epic-​sized place).
The sections are these:
* Bookstore — Full of instructional (both beginner and intermediate) and song books for all instruments (and organized by such as well)
* Drums and Drum sets
* Woodwinds and brass
* Strings
* Guitars
* Sound equipment
* Pianos — located upstairs with a very conservative sales rep who knew his stuff
* Lessons — located upstairs (near the pianos) with a waiting room that looks very similar to a large doctor’s office.
* Café in the lobby by cash
What was great about this place was that its noise was from the bustle of shoppers and not the playing and banging of instruments you’d expect to hear. The display cases for some of their instruments (particularly the woodwinds and brasses) looked like a museum displaying delicate works of art… shiny.
This is truly a place for any musician to check out and for those looking to start up with an instrument, make this a starting point.

Great looking store, well stocked and even some boutique gear (eg Suhr). Pricing seems competitive.
The staff are clueless, though; apparently have no knowledge of the gear they are selling, at least in the guitars and PA departments. Too bad. I have been in the store half a dozen times, and every time there has been the same issue: the staff don’t know the gear they sell. Amps, f/​x pedals, guitars, PA accessories, every time a disappointment with the staff not being able to answer questions on gear or recommend things that might suit my needs.

Coolest musical instrument store ever. Each segment of musical instrument has it’s own little store. It looks like a lot of cafes inside a big office building and each café has their own specialty; guitars, woodwinds, string, percussion, turntables, and pretty much everything. Staff is super knowledgeable and most of them are teachers at the school upstairs. The café on the main floor isn’t bad and they have tasty treats. Where this store shines is the guitar section. Pick and guitar, walk into one of many soundproof rooms, plug in, and jam all day long. Nobody will bug you! It’s pretty sweet, even if you don’t own a guitar you could prob log a few hours each day here. The Acoustic section upstairs is really nice and has cool circle couches to jam on.
Overall, this is THE place to go for music gear. The prices are a little higher than some other places but it’s not much of a difference and the service and experience make up for it. Come here and try to resist buying anything, a bloody hard thing to do.

This place is a magical palace for all things musical. You could spend hours here browing the «rooms» and checking out percussion, guitars, keyboards, etc. There is no place like this anyway in the world. I honrestly think that is their claim to fame — they are the largest music store in the world! Ive been to music alley on 48th st in NYC a thousand times — and aside from the historical ambiance there…“hey buddy, did you know that Peter Buck was just strumming that guitar 15 mins ago…” nothing beats the exploration at Cosmo. They did a great job in planning the new design which is a huge step up from their small, cavernous digs that were at Yonge and 16th ave. Not that there was anything wrong with that place — but the new digs on Leslie St are just too crazy good to pass up
Staff is dynamic and fun and so knowledgeable. Prices are very reasonable as well… so while I love Steves and L&M, you cant beat the experience that is Cosmo!
