Every Thursday Mavericks has a reggae night. One of the few places you can go for reggae in the city, it is definitely the best I have been to. I went with a friend of mine from Jamaica and we spent most of the night dancing and also people watching. There were a lot of other Jamaicans there, so this must be a sign of authenticity! The bar itself isn’t that attractive, its pretty old and sort of empty looking. Decorating obviously hasn’t been the priority. We had fun and were sorry when it was last call. A great place to go on a Thursday night!

I went to this place for a concert and probably will never go back unless the lineup is better. I knew the one performer and was attending to watch him but the organizers(perhaps the bar itself) lined up the most random bands and let one band(probably the least talented one) perform several more songs than the others. The bar offers very little and the place is generally old and run down. While waiting outside to get in and during fresh air breaks we also encountered some of Ottawa’s finest on Rideau Street. The night was saved by my friend’s performance but next time I’m hoping he’ll be taking his act elsewhere and I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

Maverick’s is a stripped down bar with lots of empty space, dirty vibes and no panache. But it’s still a good place to see a show. When I’ve gone, it wasn’t too cramped: I actually had lots of room to dance. However, this bar can attract some popular indie bands, so lots of space isn’t always the case. If you’re into punk, this is one of the better places to go. I have no interest in the music, but I often see hefty line-ups for their punk shows. I don’t recall the bar’s selection being that fantastic, but generally all I want is a beer when I go to a show anyway. Some of the clientèle can be a bit sketchy at times, but that just adds to the flavour.
