Cat’s Fish & Chips

I liked being there, tried their haddock beer-​battered. And calamari. It was good. I paid 24 $ at the end of the deal. Servers were very friendly. And very helpful.

I brought my date here and we had the haddock and chips he said it’s the best he’s had in a long time. I agree! I’ve also had the salmon with rice and it’s delicious. Definitely worth trying. The service is friendly and fast. They have a great little patio to sit out on in the summer too.

Please bring back mushy peas!

This restaurant is in our neighbourhood & we’ve been wanting to try it out. Stopped by for a late lunch. Service was A-​1, food was very good. Started with Clam Chowder (not too thick like some other places I’ve had it), I had crab cakes with salad, partner had halibut fish & chips and we ended the meal sharing bread pudding served warm with ice cream. Everything was Yummy! We definitely will go back.

Great service, friendly, quick. They aim to please here. Haddock & chips were pretty darn good. Max the Monkey had fun, too. Yeah, I would go back. BTW, no one paid me to write this.

Cat’s Fish & Chips as the name states is a local fish & chips joint. The interior is very cozy although I find most of the seating inside to be uncomfortable and favour sitting on the outside patio which is very comfortable and really the best place to enjoy a fish & chips in the summer.
The fish & chips here are amazing. The fish taste fresh and the beer batter really has a homemade taste. The hand cut fries are always fresh and delicious.
Every time I have been there the service has been impeccable and friendly.
The only CON is that parking is VERY limited.

Went to pick up my order and they refused my tax exemption card. Will never go back. Don’t care whether the food is good or not. If they don’t care enough about their customers satisfaction to program a key on their computer then I don’t care enough to support that business in my community.

My husband and I had dinner here recently.
This place has a lot of character. It has a kitschy nautical theme to it, complete with a mannequin dressed like a pirate that greets you at the entrance. The words «Poop Deck» are painted on the wall with an arrow pointing downstairs towards the washrooms. They play Maritime Folk music. I love this kind of music, and I love kitsch, so needless to say, I liked the environment.
The man who greeted us was also our server, I think his name was Tim. He was very courteous and attentive. And very good at up-​selling (!) We weren’t going to have a starter, but he talked us into the Calamari (and I’m glad he did because the Calamari was awesome).
The Calamari (called «Rings by the Sea») were $ 8.94. This may be totally random, but they were very reminiscent of the Cajun Dusted Calamari at Scruffy Murphy’s at Yonge and Eglinton in Toronto circa 2001 (where I spent many days of my youth). I LOVED the calamari at Scruffy Murphy’s, so needless to say I also loved the Rings by the Sea at Cat’s. The calamari were dusted lightly with cornmeal and seasoning and then deep fried, so they were not coated in batter. They had the right amount of «spring» but were not chewy. I would definitely get these again. They came with plum sauce for dipping, which I thought was a little odd, but my husband thought it was good. Call me a traditionalist, but I personally prefer the usual seafood sauce with my calamari, although the mayo-​like aioli which is oh so popular nowadays is acceptable too. I just noticed on the online menu that it says it comes with your choice of dipping sauce. We weren’t asked at the restaurant, so I guess the default sauce is plum sauce.
For my main I had the Cutlass Haddock (one piece) $ 13.51 (two pieces is $ 21.12). You have your choice of breaded or beer batter, I chose the latter. I chose the Waterclover Salad as my main. The salad was good, it was actual mixed greens (not iceberg) with carrots, tomato and cucumber. The balsamic dressing was also very good. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed with my fish. I found it overly greasy. It was much too oily for my liking. However, it was a generous piece, and it was crispy and hot.
My husband had the Grilled Salmon (Davey Jones Salmon) $ 17.96. He chose fries as his side dish. The fries were awesome. They are rather thick cut (which I don’t usually like), but I liked the thick cut fries at Cat’s. They looked and tasted like maybe they are twice-​fried. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and all around excellent. I had a taste of his salmon which was good. I found it rather on the small side though. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal. He said the salmon was very fresh.
My husband also had a fresh-​squeezed lemonade ($ 3.50) which he thought had a the right amount of tart and sweet.
Overall it’s a quaint place with a lot of character. I’m giving it 4 stars even though I didn’t like my fish because my husband loved it here, I’m a sucker for kitschy décor and their calamari are the best that I’ve tasted in a long time (quite possibly in the last 13 years). It’s near the corner of St. Laurent and Hemlock. There is limited parking in front (and possibly on the side or back).

I am from the east coast and found out about this place a few months ago so I have been looking forward to eating here. My friend and I both ordered the fish and chips with dressing and gravy. The CDG was really quite tasty and gave me that comforting feeling of being back home. I asked for a two piece fish meal but received three. The first piece was great, beer battered and lots of flavor. The second piece was off, so I left it and it kind of ruined the meal for me… but I decided to have some of the yummy cole slaw to get the flavor of bad fish out of my mouth and it was a mistake, there was a spicy metallic taste to it unlike anything I have eaten before. I mentioned all of this to our server and was told the manager said the batter was lighter then usual? I dont know what that would have to do with the fish being off? I did not ask for anything to be taken off of my bill for the fish that I did not consume or the cole slaw that was also inedible and was put off when the bill for two two piece fish chips dressing gravy and two cokes totaled $ 49! Needless to say I personally was not impressed and if anyone asks I would not recommend this restaurant.

So I went to cat’s fish house after reading reviews on Unilocal.I was in the mood for friday night greasy fried food and this place gave me exactly that. I was really delighted that they had a gluten free menu and even more impressed when I received my gf battered fish and chips. The fish was moist and the batter crispy. Perfect! The fries were also good but could have used a little more salt or seasoning. My friend had the regular beer battered fish and said it was very good. I have to say I am happy I got the 1 piece fish because neither of us could finish our plates. Next time I will go with a salad on the side. Dessert was also good. I had the rice pudding and my friend had the chocolate donut which was fried to order and topped with yummy ice cream. This place also carried a gf beer so that was great.
Now the downsides of the meal– both the slaw and the tartar sauce were too mayonnaisy. The tartar had no bit :(also the crows nest (fried onions) were soggy and too salty.
But overall a very tasty place that I will be back whenever I crave battered fish. It’s a small restaurant but quaint and super friendly. Good service and prices ok. Just make sure you get there early as you may have a wait and there are no reservations friday dinner.

Excellent food with Gluten-​Free options.
The Haddock is very tasty and so is the basa.
I strongly recommend this place, It has a relaxed, casual and friendly atmosphere.
Great for a date and also very close to the aviation museum in Ottawa.

Returning after a long hiatus. Fund Cat’s to be very busy. Plenty of folks heading out for fish & chips on a Saturday night. A very brisk takeout trade in progress too.
I had my two sons in tow and took the only seats available at the bar. Service was fast and friendly despite the large crowd. The line up at the door never abated during our entire stay.
We all had the Haddock and chips. The kids having the kids portion and I went with the one piece of fish. We were all quite satisfied and the boys even got a decent ice cream sundae to top it all off.
The fish can be ordered breaded, beer battered and there is even a gluten free option.
Served with the usual sides. The chips were vey good, the coleslaw creamy with a slight spiciness to it.
The rest of the menu looked good as well, but I was in the mood for F&C.
Looking forward to a return visit.

My wife and I went to Cat’s Fish and Chips when we could not get into The Pepper Garden on Montréal Road one busy evening. For roughly the same price as a meal at the latter, we each had a one piece haddock fish and chips. The meal was OK and the service was friendly and prompt. The restaurant was fairly full with some kids in attendance but not noisy. Cat’s does not have an extensive menu and its fish and chips are about as good as such a meal can get. The servings are large and not too greasy. Will I go back? Not immediately but if you are looking for fish and chips in the east end I would not hesitate to go to Cat’s.
