History

Established in 1997.

Perry Meeker opened the Mad Hatter Olde British Pub on Broadway in downtown Orangeville in 1997. A fire destroyed the building in 2003. The Mad Hatter was re-established at our current location, 101 First Street (beside Future Shop).

Perry joined forces with long time friend Tim O’Hallerin in fall 2011 and opened this fantastic new pub concept. Fresh, local and everything made in house! Except, of course, the oysters. The Oyster Bar is open Wed-Sun evenings, but you can get our fresh oysters at anytime, day or night!

Great service, great food, but reasonably priced.

Business Owner

Perry has operated the Mad Hatter since 1997. He is actively involved in the community. Perry was chair of the B.I.A. for Orangeville for 8 years. He also served as a director of the Greater Dufferin Area Chamber of Commerce for 4 years. He currently serves as chair of the Business Excellence Awards for the GDACC.

Tim has been in the hospitality industry as long as he has been an actor! Newly transplanted from Rodney’s Oyster Bar — Vancouver, Tim brings the seafood concept to Orangeville. Tim is still acting in various movies and commercials. You can see him on the boob tube currently on Heart and Stroke, Manulife and Lotto 649 commercials. The name Ruby Pier came to us from one of Tim’s movies. Check out «Five People You Meet in Heaven» — Jon Voight, Ellen Burstyn, Jeff Daniels and of course Tim! He played Mickey Shea…

Food took a long time to arrive. My fish tacos were overcooked and dry, the french fries heavy with oil. Service was terrible. I did not eat my meal and told a server it was pretty disgusting. My sister and sister in law had to stop our waitress as she flew by to get another drink. We did not get our bill so after waiting a long time we went up to the front to pay.
We told them how substandard the service and food had been. After some heated dialogue, they finally took the tacos off the bill. We were also given $ 5 gift cards which will remain unused. My sister is in extreme gastric discomfort at the moment so perhaps I am fortunate the food was so unpalatable. The rest of our party went to McDonald’s. I ate a muffin. It was edible and unpretentious.

Everything was good and fresh and tasty. We had a few entres. liver and Onions, oysters, hockey fingers, butter chicken and fish and chips. Fries were great, fish and chips should of had another piece. The live and Onions were very good. The butter chicken was very good. All in all three and a half to four stars for a pub style restaurant. We were a bit confused between Mad Hatter and Ruby Pier being combined. The web site shows entres that are not available at the restaurant.

After a show, and our first choice of area restaurant had closed for the day, we opted to head over to Ruby Pier for dinner. The last time we had been there it was still just ‘Mad Hatter’.
If you sit on the ‘bar’ side, the first thing you will notice is the old ‘bar smell’. Not particularly great. The selection of beers on tap were pretty decent, although I’d be curious how old some of the lega were on less popular brands.
The menu didnt have anything that screames ‘got to try thing’, and was basically pub menu on one half and basic steak menu on other.
We started with an order french soup each (was minus 25c out and needed somethig to warm up with). What a disappointment. Flavourless soup with a slice of store bought white bread and what seemed like mozzerella. Bland. The wife took a spoonful and pushed it away. When the server cleared her soup away not even a question of the soup wasnt to her liking, just a ‘are you done’. Guess it’s a staff that either no longer cares, or is accustomed to returned dishes.
For the main we had some ‘chicken flutes’ and ‘fish tacos’. More of the same flavourless dishes. The fish tacos were over cooked, bland, and near empty. The accompanying fries totally under cooked and still ‘hard’ inside. The ‘chicken flutes’ were nothing more than bland deep fried tortilla shells. Again, both dishes returned with far from empty plates.
Once done we had to go to another restaurant simply to end the night with a decent meal in our bellies. After our experience, if the norm, can only wonder how long the pier can be for Ruby given the other great dining options for Orangeville.

Went once for dinner with friends. Drab interior. Waited over an hour for entrée to arrive and it was cold when it arrived. Like it had been sitting on the counter for 15 minutes before they served it. Waited another 10 minutes to find our server, who didn’t show up again and I ended up carrying my still untouched entrée back to the kitchen to get it reheated.
We complained loudly to the manager when we left and he acted like it was no big deal. This restaurant is actually less than no big deal and we will never go back… ever… and neither should you.

A welcome addition to the pub scene in Orangeville; if oysters had been available before, I don’t where.
Great building with a lot of charm hiding inside. Pub side is cozy and comfortable, as it should be. Dining side is wide open: service counter, food prep are all visible from most tables. Nice little «library» nook in the front corner.
Service is honest, individualized and friendly. Real friendly, as in they treat you like a person, not fake friendly like at a franchise.
I have enjoyed both meals so far (both lunches). Please to find halibut on the menu in place of haddock. Can’t say enough about the oysters: 3 Canadian varieties to choose from, properly presented on a bed of ice, with interesting sauces to add if you choose. I used to drive into Toronto for this!

Grand opening today… did not start out well. The table we sat at was very wobbly and had drink coasters to support the legs. My wife sat down on a loose chair and realized a rung was missing. Not a place to bring children, there is absolutely no kids menu.
Had the crab cakes, not bad have had better, but don’t eat the coleslaw. absolutely horrible! We had the burger and fish and chips, both are served on enormous plates and they spread the fries out to make it look bigger then it is. Still tasting the fish an hour later. dry not much taste.
Based on the name they had a selection of oysters but only 2 steaks on the menu. A very limited menu. save your money and don’t waste your time. Not a very good experience. we will not go back!

Definately not a cheery place. The pub looks unfinished with painted concrete floors that make the tables wobbly. The chairs are old, mine was falling apart. The service is sub par.
The menu is ostentatious, with only 3 steaks on the menu it belies it’s claim to steak and seafood. A hamburger is 15 $ and is served on a huge plate with greasy fries and coleslaw (don’t eat it unless you want a numb tongue)
Lots of fish dishes. The battered fish and chips are not worth the money. The fish is dry, and no seasoning to speak of; served with some tasteless creamy sauce that isn’t even close to tarter sauce.
No kids menu at all. We were offered chicken fingers, but they can’t do a kids burger.
2 meals and a starter of crab cakes cost 50 $, we had to go to subway after to eat because the fish and chips that my son and I tried to share was not palatable.
