We have been here a few times and I have always found it hit and miss and definitely more miss. The menu isn’t my favorite, it has some alright choices. Our waitress was friendly and seemed knowledgable but seemed very busy and left us with empty beverages and once the food arrived never came back to see if everything was ok. The ticket times were at least 30 minutes and the food coming out of the kitchen wasn’t the freshest. I ordered the fire chicken Caesar salad which sounded good but when it arrived it was a 2 ounce chicken breast and had nothing but rusty lettuce and a rotten lemon wedge. This should have never left the kitchen. Once it arrived and I discovered the state of my meal no one came back to check on us so but the time someone did my family was done so I chose to just send it back and take it off the bill. It would have been nice to get a sorry about that we have take an additional 10% off or something. With all this being said I think tonight sealed the deal and I will never return to Mr Mikes Okotoks. The need better food quality and better management.

The Okotoks Mr Mikes is a good example of the atmosphere that the chain is trying to create. I would have to say that I disagree with some of the other reviewers who have posted here as I believe they are a steakhouse which serves the kind of food you would expect. The steak I was served at Mr Mikes was delicious and appropriately sized for what I ordered and cooked to the rareness that I asked for. I also had the Caesar salad with my steak which was good(it’s pretty hard to screw up a Caesar salad). Now what I really want to complement them on is their summer long island iced tea. Some brilliant bartender(probably not the first, but it was my first experience) used raspberry vodka in the long island iced tea to create a drink more akin to the baby of a long island iced tea and one of those rocket popsicles that you eat when you’re a kid. It was the perfect drink for a hot summer day and filled me with happiness. We also tried the chicken bites(served with sweet chili sauce or something similar), which tasted exactly as you would expect and were good. We were seated in the lounge and it was about 1⁄3 full so we received excellent service. Why not 5 stars? Well the corn they served us was kind of sad as it was on the cob but was quite mushy. Also they mixed up our potato orders, but that wasn’t a big deal. Want a good family meal with lots of variety, then head on over to Mr Mikes.

The merits of Mr. Mike’s have been mix and match. My first experience at the steakhouse commenced on a recent wintry Sunday afternoon with a mob of clamorous and mischievous ilk expected to accompany this writer. Despite the expanse of available real estate in the Okotoks establishment, we were inexplicably seated in immediate proximity to a nice, normal family. They probably have a cute, well-behaved pet and drive a Volvo. After a few educational minutes within earshot of our boisterous band, they got their meals to go. We were so jovial and loud, we nearly attracted the attention of a waitress. The drinks were great, one of the ladies in my party being served a spectacular Dadaistic slushee precariously heaped into its glass. Positive reports on steak sandwiches and burgers emanated from our booth, my dish of fiery prawns and noodles equally notable. A good time was had by all, save one marred family unit. Understandably, restaurants don’t put their star chef on the Sunday shift, but the pleasant surprise of my original visit warranted a return. My latest appearance at the restaurant however, was brutal. The inadequate service was consistent with my inaugural experience even though the restaurant was empty, but the food was also substandard on this occasion. I ordered a different noodle dish, one in which the cook prepared noodles that expired sometime during the Ming Dynasty. Whatever unpalatable hodgepodge of sauces and spices were hamfistedly slammed together in this dish radiated a mephitic odor and committed a wrathful assault on my taste buds. I can only speculate that this food had been retrieved from an autopsy. My companion’s meal was no prize either, a salad that had obviously been pre-prepared and stored in a cooler, making the tortilla chips as limp as the lettuce. If you’re going to eat at a Steakhouse on Sunday, don’t stake anything on Mr. Mike’s unsavory savoir-faire.

I have taken the kids here maybe 3 times. I’d say we’ve gone back more than once because the menu and atmosphere was kid-friendly, and they enjoy themselves. The service has also been quite good each time. I’m only giving 3 stars, though, because I can’t get over the fact they call themselves a steakhouse in Alberta, and lay down a steak THAT thin! I mean seriously, I do not understand the management’s logic at all. Buy a better cut, cook it properly(i.e. not medium well done because that’s about the best you can hope for, etc.). Why destroy your restaurant’s reputation by such an obvious oversight? We’ll likely go back again sometime, for the kids. But I won’t ever order a steak.

So being a smaller town we don’t have a whole bunch of options so we tried this again. There were seven of us and when we walked in there were people everywhere. I thought that this may just be a good sign. The first disappointment was that our group had to sit in two benches back to back, not sure why we didn’t pull any tables together or why they didn’t quickly clean the huge bench that was empty but for the dirty dishes. I thought they could have at least moved the dishes??? The service was good, very friendly and mostly prompt. no complaints there. I had a $ 27 steak with yam fries, fried mushrooms and Cesar salad. The salad was good, the mushrooms were tasty and the steak was as good as any steak I have had at a truck stop. Seriously, it was a terrible cut. It was ¼ to ½ inch thick and dry. I’m not sure it was even a rib eye. The only reason they get two stars is the service.
