History

Established in 1976.

Chairman and founder Manny Mashouf introduced the first bebe boutique in San Francisco in 1976 after emigrating to the United States from Iran. Recognizing a demographic that was neither junior nor bridge, Manny created the first contemporary fashion brand. The name «bebe» (pronounced «bee-​bee») was inspired by «To be, or not to be» in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and coined at a party where Manny and his friends were discussing the essence of existence. In 2003 bebe added its bebe Sport line with an emphasis on the active lifestyle. Nearly 40 years after Manny’s first store opened its doors, bebe is one of the world’s top fashion retailers.
