Save On-Foods in a way is similar to Safeway because of it’s ridiculous prices. They are basically on the same level and trying to be competitive with each other. The thing with this Save-On-Foods is the fact that the outside is very big, the insides of the place are small. Save-On-Foods and Safeway tend to be stores for families to want to stock up and save. It is a good store that has fresh food along with natural food like brown basmati rice and all, but honestly. there are better options.

Used my TD Visa Debit Card for a transaction. First one, the cashier entered $ 20 + 4.47(my purchase) for 24.47 total, i cancelled b/c I wanted $ 15 cash back. Pinpad said Transaction Not Complete. Fine. Re-did the transaction for 19,47(15 +4.47) and it went thru, took my money and left. Check online, and there were two transactions! One for 24.47 and one for 19.47. Save-on foods doesn’t see an overage, and says its legitimate. I’ve filed a dispute with TD… they’re another pain in the rear-end! ARGH! Watch out for your debit account.

Pretty standard Save On Food franchise. Good selection of fresh produce, a nice little fish section(stick with the items labelled ‘fresh’) The deli has a great selection of meats, and there is a wonderful cheese section right next to it(cheese makes the world go around). Their roasted chicken meal deal are always a bargain although some days they can be a little on the dry side. Their bulk food section is always well stocked and they sell some fantastic brands of coffee(Kicking Horse, Doi Chang) The only downside is the aisle ways are a little narrow, so navigating the store during peak hours is a bit troublesome.

You know what a Save-on-Foods is; I don’t have to tell you. Well-priced, good selection of natural organic products, rocking bulk aisles. This location, opened about a year ago, is a little squishy in terms of size but it’s convenient, for me at least. Now, I hate to call out employees of any business in a negative way, but dear god, my fellow Unilocalers, you deserve a warning. This Save-on employs one of the slooooooowwwwwweeeeeesssssstttttt cashiers I have ever seen. She studied my groceries like she was going to be quizzed on them. The produce portion of the program was just painful. At two different points in the process, my husband had to run to the shelf to get the tag for her so she could check out an item.(She wasn’t a new employee, either, so no excuses there.) I offered to help bag my items and she refused … so I had to watch her commit atrocities like trying to put detergent in a bag with meat. And because the checkouts are designed with very short conveyor belts it meant that while full bags were taking up limited space at the end, we still had stuff waiting in the shopping cart at the other end. It was painful. We started warning people behind us in line that this was not going to be quick … one woman elected to jump over to the self-checkout and she was out of there and down the escalator, giving us the thumbs up, before we were done with the checkout from hell. So if you are ever in the New West Save-on-Foods and you are approaching a short cashier with curly hair and a deceptively pleasant smile, choose another line, any line. According to the manager we spoke to, this cashier isn’t going anywhere soon, and neither will you. On the good side, she was very conscientious, making sure I got all the Save-on-More bonus points I was entitled to.(Yay, points! Free milk!) And when I checked my receipt, it turned out she’d only made one mistake. It’s the luck of the draw when you pick a line or a lane in life. Most of the time I use this store for quick trips and do self-checkout. Let my example serve as a lesson to others and improve your odds of not getting stuck in a checkout line that rivals glaciers for speed.

I was really excited to have Save On Foods finally in New West. In other locations I have been able to find so many things that I wouldn’t at Safeway, unfortunately this location is very small and I couldn’t even get Oregano in the bulk section. I also find this store slightly confusing in it’s set up. I am not sure why it just doesn’t feel right. What is going for the store is the friendly service and people that I have encountered there.
