It’s a student bar, but it’s clean and comfortable. Seating in the back is quieter and the food is middle of the road, but better than other pub fare in the area.

Such a great place to relax. The interior sends you to Ireland. It’s a place where you feel really welcome. The menu will for sure have something for everyone. Poutines, burgers, sandwiches, fries, onions rings, name it! I got myself a large smoked meat poutine which was delicious. For the price I expected a bit more for my belly but it was preeeeetty good. It’s near UdeM and Brebeuf and right outside the metro of Côte-des-Neiges!!! How awesome is that!!! You’re tired after a day at school and there’s a pub right there! RIGHTTHERE!!!

There wasn’t anything overly exciting about this place, but I liked it. I visited on a Monday evening with three guys from my hockey team. Surprisingly, for a Monday, the place was very packed. It was mostly a student or new grad crowd so there was an energy about the place. Lot’s of draft beer options. Prices of the food surprised me for a pub, but the service was good. No complaints. Good pub experience.

After a long cold walk we decided to stop off here to grab a quick bite. Wasn’t impressed with the food. Got cheese sticks with cheddar cheese. Really nothing special no cheese in them at all. Comes with sour cream and salsa very meh. Go to nickels if u want cheese sticks lol. Another thing now With the new law you have to get ur bill after each drink which is fine but then our waitress came up pressuring us to pay our bill now because she was leaving and wanted her tip. I understand how you have to leave but by doing so I didn’t buy anything else. The inside is nice and cozzy and very dark and dingy in a great way.

Good place for a nice pint of beer. Lack of Irish music to make it feel more…“Irish” but still a nice place, easy access and nice atmosphere. Food is good too.

Nice place but very busy for a Friday happy hour. Disappointed in the service and that they don’t accept credit & debit cards. Also they don’t take reservations. Will consider this place for the future with friends.

The setting is pretty good, both inside with the Irish Pub feel and outside on the patio. I thought the Chuck Norris poutine was overrated out of scale though. There’s something about the combination of too-strong green shallots and sesame flavour that made it feel like a poor attempt at creating Asian fusion poutine. The pieces of soft rubber that I later found to be philly steak added no value at all. I was not a fan. May there be a better poutine at McCarold’s so that I can give a proper rating.

Landed here via the Metro on a suggestion from a local as we love a good pint of Guinness. They definitely came though! Great local pub with a good draft. Bartender made a few foo foo drinks too. Plenty of food for all tastes. Reasonable prices and a friendly bartender made us feel welcomed. Great place to kill a couple of hours. Girls-hooks for your purse under the bar. Nice touch. Recommended? YES if you like a great pints of beer conversation fresh air good food and fun. Just my opinion.

Large beer selection. Music was on point. Poutine bites were very savory …but where they lack is in their burgers. Tasted like frozen beef patties. Had better burgers at your average fast food joint.

We came with a group. We all ordered poutines and found that some of them were a bit cold. Nonetheless, good enough to be drank with their great selection of beers. I liked that the interior wasn’t too dark like it’s the case with Irish pubs.

Unilocal montreal poutine committee meet for April! so me and a bunch of Unilocalers went to mccarolds for our monthly committee meet to eat poutine and discuss things. plenty of things going from personal lives to how to change the world to future Unilocal events. yes, if you want first dibs on what’s coming up on Unilocal montreal, the poutine meet is a good place to learn about it ;p anyway, so the poutine meet. there’s a choice of 8 different kind of poutines offered at mccarolds ranging from the regular cheese gravy to full on meat. I went with the chuck norris poutine with a side of poutine bites. alongside those, got a black russian to wash it down. service is very friendly, attentive and incredibly fast. the chuck norris poutine: a pretty good poutine. a very thick and flavorful gravy. the only con would be the warm gravy. needs to be hotter so the curds melt. otherwise, a very satisfying poutine for a pub. the poutine bites: oh boy! crazy awesome! it’s curds with gravy inside a potato ball/shell which is then deep fried for one hell of a magical bite. very reminiscent of the soup dumpling. one bite and the gravy is oozing out running down your hand or if all in, it simply explodes in your mouth. a tad expensive, $ 6 for 5 bites but definitely worth it. they have all kinds of beer including non-alcoholic ones. place is big enough with a terrace during summer. it fills up quite fast. there’s place to sit in the back which I’d say is better as the front gets crowded making moving around a tad difficult as the tables are quite close to each other. pretty good Irish pub in the CDN area which doesn’t have much interesting spots to hang out. I’d be back. have to say though, place is cash only. there’s an atm by the bathroom in the back but best to bring cash to save on those stupid crazy fees

I had such a nice first visit here today! I found the service super chill and friendly and helpful, and I liked the look and feel of the bar a lot. Lots of beautiful wood and nice layout with big communal tables, small private corners and lots of space for the gangs of students that I’m sure cram in here. We were there on a Saturday afternoon so there was a nice mix of people reading or working on laptops, couples hanging out, groups of friends, etc and it kept filling up over the 2 hours we were there. There was a nice collection of beers, though a few more smaller local brews would be fun additions. The poutine with deep fried jalapenos I tried was tasty, good fries, and the heat from the peppers cut the gravy nicely. Not amaaazing brown gravy, but totally tasty. I’ll definitely come back, I liked the vibe, and the fish and chips at the other table looked like something I could sink my teeth into…

Had the Irish stew with a five dollar pint of Boreale. For a twenty dollar lunch it was decent, but not exceptional. The service was great, as I was the first lunch client. The order was prompt, we were served within mins. The stew should have had more taste… it was sort of meh.

McCarold’s pub is where j’ai vraiment appris le français. After horribly-structured and obligatory French classes à l’Université de Montréal or orchestra rehearsals, or just to watch a hockey game after a long day in the trombone mines, McCarold’s is easily the most well-run and pleasant establishment in MTL qui commence avec un Mc. It’s effectively an annex of l’UdeM. Maybe just the faculté de musique? The downside: cash-only, and the service né fonctionne vraiment en anglais, MAIS if you can deal with speaking French, the servers are just as nice/efficient as any pub/restaurant that you can expect to find in MTL… which still isn’t very good. As an alma mater of l’UdeM paying international student fees, I came to appreciate the cash-only nature of the place as I would be less likely to get myself into a troubling amount of debt while un étudiant. So actually scratch those to downsides on second thought. As for the upsides, I’m clearly a fan of this place. They play the hockey matches, they have nice and reasonably priced pub fare(big burgers, solid poutines), et la séléction des bières gives all of them international students at UdeM a nice idea of local mid-market beers. As far as unimportant superficial stuff, the place is nice and woody and looks the way a pub should look. All in all, this remains a nice pub to go with old or new friends, to just watch a sport game of some sort(they used to play rugby sometimes!), or a decent place in the neighbourhood to grab a beerlunch. Besides, all the jerks from HEC Montréal don’t make it past Tabasco bar, so you don’t have to even deal with them. ;-)

We’ve been there many times. The cider is really good, the foods are amazing(exactly burgers and the Cesar’s salads), the amount is perfect, the guys are kind. The price is good. The only«problem» you cannot pay by card, but there’s an ATM inside.

I’ve been to McCarold’s several times and will definitely be back several times more. They have a great beer and scotch selection and the atmosphere is always friendly and chill. Their kitchen also makes great pub food: make sure you try their onion rings! They have TVs, but they’re on only when the Habs are playing, which is great(I typically dislike TVs at bars). Only drawback is that you need to remember it is cash only.

I want to like this place, I really do. The food’s good, the poutines are innovative, the beer is cheap, the atmosphere’s decent. But, egads, the service is *awful*. Waiters are surly and rude and act like they’re doing you a giant favour to take a round of drink orders — when you can find them, that is. And, contrary to prior reviews, this place is cash-only and gives you a stinkload of attitude when you try to pay with a card. I mean, we’re not talking about a small-ticket place; tabs can easily run $ 50-$ 60 in the course of a night. I don’t know anyone who carries that sort of cash around. For a business to not take credit or even debit cards, and then get mad at customers for daring to even ask, in 2014, is IMHO unforgiveable. The server haughtily informed us that it was«choix de l’entreprise». Well, my «choix de client» is not to go back. There are plenty of other Irish pubs in this city.

What dilemma I have here. How to review McCarold’s! Argh… Cute place. Typical pub décor, which is perfectly fine… It’s a pub. Tasty enough food. Great beer. But… But the service! OMG the service. Is it still called service if you don’t get any? And I’m not talking a Friday night here. I’m talking 3pm on a sunday. Our group of 7 was like invisible. «excuse me, can I place an order? Excuse me, water please. Excuse my, does a fork come with the poutine?» seriously, don’t make us chase you for everything when the place isn’t full. It’s really my only knock on the place.

Pub & restaurant irlandais assez… ^__^
