Great atmosphere. Quite chill. Heard an awesome band there when I went. They’re definitely not stingy with the amount of alcohol they put in their mixed drinks and the bartenders are very friendly. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone in the mood for a good laid back night.

Perfect bar with a divey vibe. The bartender was great to talk to, the beer was a good price, and my bar stool felt homey within seconds. I will certainly be back here again a few times before I leave Montréal because good bars deserve nothing less then multiple visits.

I’m not a barfly, and I don’t consider myself a connoisseur of drinking establishments. I love going to Grumpy’s on a Wednesday night for the jazz jam session. Grumpy’s is a nice bar that caters to a wide range of people. You’ll often find students here due to the proximity to Concordia, McGill, LaSalle, Herzing, and other colleges I’ve forgotten to mention and didn’t attend. Wednesday nights are my favorite time to visit, because of the weekly jazz jam sessions, one of my favourite jams in the city. It’s a nice opportunity to play with established musicians as well as up-and-coming new talent. I’ve been in the audience and onstage here, and it’s always nice to come back to the stone walls and bar stools in this subterranean hangout.

YES! YES! YES! a hole in a wall kind of bar or if you will the perfect dive bar in the downtown area. its there but no one really knows about it and that’s how we love it. beer is cheap and tasty, there’s a stage next to the bar for whatever performer they have on that night. and in the back, you have tables where you can enjoy a pint or two or three while munching on whatever food you brought in. yes, you can bring food in as long as you drink and because they don’t have food. how awesome? so it was a Unilocal poutine committee meet at a korean restaurant nearby(not so nearby) but we were too many. instead of waiting for tables, we all decided for a takeout poutine bar hopping evening in glorious montreal winter. and thanks to Risa, we got to discover this hole, glorious hole! i totally recommend this. if you want something totally off the wall montreal, this one is worth considering

So an American walks into an Irish Pub in a French-Canadian city… talk about your cultural cocktails. Despite 90% of the customers speaking French, you could mistake Grumpy’s for a classic pub in New York, or Dublin for that matter. Underground, dark, chill… one TV off to the side just in case you want to watch something on TV… that’s the way an Irish pub should be; heck, even the TV is optional. Bartender was great. Really nice, attentive, and quick.

Super cool place, glad to have spent some time here. I like IPA’s, and the barkeep said«yeah, we have that» and I was able to have a few. Don’t know the brand/brewer, it was just a matter of asking for a nice IPA.

The ambience of this place is cool. It’s an Irish pub with a warm, friendly, and chill atmosphere. The bartender was nice. I’m not much of a drinker so I asked him to make something good for me and it was really good! Highly recommend!

Among my friends, this place seems to have a bit of a cult following. Most of the people I know who have been there consider it their favorite bar in the city. I haven’t drunk the Kool-Aid, so to speak, but it’s a pretty good bar, especially when it’s warmer out and you can sit outside and marvel at the relative quiet on the block, especially when compared to Crescent St. just a stone’s throw away.

Quaint little underground bar with stone walls and dim lighting that give you a warm, homey feeling, and two terrasses that allow you to enjoy the summer breeze or catch some fresh air. The staff are cool and welcoming, the beer is great and reasonably priced, and the live bands are always jammin’. Grumpy’s is definitely a fun place to go for a few rounds with some good company!

Come on down into Grumpy’s and laugh with the hilarious staff, find your corner amid the stone walls and listen to local talent sing, strum their guitars or rock out on a ukulele. The beer is plentiful and the prices are reasonable. It’s downtown but a bit tucked away, so it almost feels like your own special bar.

This little bar is tucked down under bishop street’s arm just off of St. Catherine street. I discovered this spot 9 years ago when I was invited to play some of my original songs at «Chick Pickin’ Mondays» and haven’t stopped going ever since. Stays open late and the kind of place where everybody knows your name and the bartenders invite you over to their house for dinner. Homebase to lots of local talented musicians and the quality of the music is as good as you would find anywhere else in town.

Love this cool, stoney, dim, half-underground hole in the wall bar run by family, and musician friends who are like an extended family. Downtown affordable, lots of live music, bluegrass jams, front and back terrasse.

Grumpys is a fun basement bar where the locals were hanging out on this night. Our waitress at Hurley’s recommended this place to us for cheaper beers $ 6? and live music. No music on this night, but there was an old fashioned trivia show. We watched the locals play for a bit before moving on. «M» wants to beleive he liked it here but«A» remembers it correctly. We left and«M» said«I don’t think I got that place. Wish the bartender made a better vodka seltzer so that will cost another star.

My friend said, «I know this place called Grumpy’s.» I said, «Let’s go there, I’ve never been.» We snaked our way in through the mid to late 30s crowd and sat down at the bar. Almost immediately, some horrid creature of a woman grabbed my friend’s shoulder and yelled at us to fuck off for no reason. We laughed. Then we ordered a couple of rounds. It was dark as hell in there. The atmosphere reminded me a little of that of the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars. The bartender was friendly and charismatic, some of the other patrons were friendly as well, but still, a lot of the patrons were also creeps. Me and my friend are in our mid to late 20s and we were clearly the youngest people in there. More than once some old witch from an old tree would barge into us and then tell us something inappropriate, which we partially enjoyed. Some of our neighbours at the bar were a couple of lone sad sacks consistently whispering, «Another beer, another shot, another beer, another shot,» to the bartender. There was a live band playing some interesting music, which progressively got louder and louder over the course of their set so that it became exponentially more difficult to communicate with my friend. I noticed that nearly 90% of the clientele were standing and chatting. It was pretty crowded and I was glad I had a seat. A seat at the bar was prime real estate and the moment my friend went to the bathroom a horde of people asked me if they could sit at his seat. I indicated that his coat was there and shook my head with delight. Because I am a jerk. A round for two gentlemen cost approximately $ 11 if I recall correctly, so it didn’t necessarily break the bank(especially not for some pints of local St-Ambroise), but it wasn’t incredibly cheap either. Anyway, the Mos Eisley Cantina isn’t the greatest place on earth but it ain’t bad either. I’ll probably make a friendly trip there on occasion(to the chagrin of their more elderly customers).

This is a super cool bar on Bishop with live music and good looking people. In Montréal, one can have a hard time finding a place that’s off the beaten path of douche-baggery, especially right ON the path of douche-baggery,(i.e. Ste– Catherine) but it’s nice to know that amidst the«clubs» with covers and strip bars with striped shirts, there exists a place for fans of good music and good people. Definitely gonna make Grumpy’s a routine tour stop.

A great little dive located in the heart of Montréal. Take a few steps down from the street into the bar; which is dark and dingy. There is usually a live band playing. The crowd is mid 20 to late 30 somethings. Typical Irish-dive bar atmosphere. Reasonable prices for the city. Enjoy a beer, cider or shot with friends and then hop on to the next dive.

What a great little place. A friend and I recently visited Montréal and spent two of our three nights here. A super cozy, neighborhood joint. After spending almost $ 40 on two rounds of beer at some awful sports bar up the road, we followed a quartet of musicians into Grumpy’s. The music was excellent, though I can’t figure out exactly how the band worked. Whatever. A French horn. I’m sold. The bartender was extremely friendly and I have a sneaking suspicion that a round or two was on him, though I was beyond math when we stumbled out of there.

A dark, little basement bar, Grumpy’s seem to be most fit for a quick stopover pint. This just doesn’t strike me as a destination bar. Don’t get me wrong, the bartender is nice and there was live music(and some dude playing a hockey stick-cum-musical instrument), but aside from that there is not too much going on in here. Standard prices for drinks, standard levels of cleanliness for a pub and standard patrons for a establishment close to downtown and McGill. If you are looking for a quiet, hole in the wall this might be your place. If you are looking for something a little more animated, wander up the street.
