St-​Viateur is better, as bagels and as human beings.
Maybe a tough comparison, but was mildly disappointed with the cold, New York-​y textured bagel ultimately packaged in bags by Fairmount Bagels. In comparison, the fresh-​out-​of-​the-​oven offerings at St-​Viateur were transcendant, with slightly crunchy shells giving way to sweet steaming carb flesh.
That said, the bagel with lox and cream was excellent. Compared to NY, sandwiches feature maybe a third of the cream cheese volume, allowing for a more careful taste of the fish and bagel. No onions or capers.
Cash only; Fairmount takes USD, but at an awful 1:1 conversion (versus St-Viateur’s rough 5:6?). Bring your loons.

I went seeking the best Montréal bagels while in Montréal and I believe Fairmont is the victor with an ever so slight lead.
You certainly aren’t going here for the service, even when it’s not busy you’re about as important to the cashier as a watermelon in fruit ninja. They want you dealt with as quickly as possible so they can move on end of story. But, the next best option for Montréal bagels is about the same and perhaps a bit ruder.
First I recommend anything that’s hot and fresh and second I recommend the chocolate chip bagels which have a cinnamon honey flavor (with chocolate… mmm).
When they are hot and fresh they don’t need any butter or cream cheese… just eat it like a hot pretzel like they do as locals.
This place is 24 hours so I recommend trying to get here a little off hours. We got here at about 10pm, still found fresh stuff and had no one else in the store. It’s obvious they deal with hoards of bagel lovers at certain times of day.

I know that the topic of Montréal’s best bagel is a divisive one and that I may have to fly under the radar for a bit after posting this review… BUT this is actually Montréal’s best bagel. Yes, St Viateur is only a street away and delicious in its own right. Yes, the difference is marginal– a fraction of a fraction of an element of flavour. NEVERTHELESS, this is Montréal’s best bagel!!!

This place sells the best bagels I’ve ever eaten by far and it would be getting five stars if not for a couple of really annoying things:
1) CASH ONLY
2) The inside is TINY and totally cramped to the point where there is no room to move (it seems like only 5 or 6 people can fit in there comfortably before it starts becoming claustrophobic). There is also no seating area inside.
3) Every time I go, the line is EXTREMELY long and we end up waiting for 20+ minutes. Because of point #2, this usually means we end up waiting those full 20 minutes OUTSIDE in the middle of winter with temperatures plummeting to –30C with the windchill.
4) They are usually out of at least one type of bagel that I want.
Nonetheless, I still continue to stop here every time I am in Montréal because the bagels really are amazing and they have a wide variety of delicious flavours. I recommend getting a toasted sesame seed bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon ($ 6.00). Seems pricey, but they are generous with the salmon and I promise the amazing taste is well worth the money.

So these are okay bagels. Very different from what I am used to in NYC, but I expected that. These were almost flakey on the outside and a bit chewy on the inside. I got the «all dressed» which I feel is the equivalent to an everything bagel. The flavor of the all dressed overpowered the entire bagel and I couldn’t really get the bagels flavor. I wish I had gotten a sesame bagel instead.
This place is insanely small and people came in in droves getting dozens of bagels. They have lox and cream cheese spreads as well. I had to try because of the hype and I would recommend trying them for sure. I don’t know that I need to come back though.

Fairmount Bagel is a small establishment, but home of the Montréal bagel.
BAGEL: I wanted a full breakfast type of bagel, but looking back, I should have gotten a damn sesame bagel! I got the garlic bagel with salmon and cream cheese (talk about rich and delicious). Unfortunately, there is no seating area inside, so we went to a coffee store around the corner and got coffee and ate the bagel in peace! This place is a strict in and out get your half dozen/​dozen bagels and get outta there. Sadly, my bagel was not toasted before given to me, so that made the bagel less than ideal.
Overall, less doughy than a NYC bagel, but gives it that less carby filling feeling and ultimately delicious!

I’ve heard Montréal bagels were world class prior to buying a few dozen bagels here last summer. I was blown away at bagels tasting so good and having great crust as well. The Montréal bagel size is perfect! I live in NYC and have eaten my share of good bagels here.
I think Montréal has better bagels, and Boston has a better hockey team! Go Bruins! haha

My review is not going to help you solve the great bagel debates of 1) St. Viteur v. Fairmount, or 2) Montréal bagels v. NYC style. What I can offer is a whole-​hearted endorsement of all things made of carbohydrates.
Montréal bagels are delicious. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a moron, or a liar. They are sweeter than the NYC style, and a lot less doughy. I find that less dough– equals a better carb to cream cheese ratio.
Fairmount bagels are wonderful. You will have to wait in line for them– but they are worth it. I ordered a to-​go bag of 12. There are a lot of flavors to choose from including: All-​dressed, Garlic, sesame, chocolate, cinnamon-​raisin, «a sweet bagel» (whatever that is), poppy seed, plain, etc. My favorite was the garlic bagel, second places goes to all-​dressed.
Fairmount does not have a toaster– so you’ll have to eat your bagels «raw» or bring them home and prepare them. Fairmount sells cream cheese — in a few different varieties, and can direct you to a good lox shop down the street. They also sell day-​old bagels at a discount, already helpfully arranged in bags, to the side of the counter.
Bagel-​sellers speak English. They are excellent at handling complex orders and are efficient at gathering all of your beloved demands.
Open 24 hours a day. It’s a good place to shop for vacation «presents» for your jealous friends and family.
Last word of advice: Fairmount bagels keep well in the freezer. If you freeze you bagels– you just need to zap them for approximately 30 seconds– and as if they are fresh again.

Small building. Very cramped when you wait in line and when you order.
Sesame Bagel — $.90 — Fresh, warm, and chewy. Sesame seeds are traditional. Size and texture are different from the normal NY bagel. Good but I still prefer a NY bagel.

Walking in here you feel almost like you’re entering a hoarder’s apartment, except that whereas a hoarder’s space would be full of junk, Fairmount’s is full of bagels, delicious, delicious bagels, bagged and arrayed on palettes stacked ten-​feet high. You walk through a short corridor, pressed between a wall and these bagel towers, to the counter. I’m not sure how this setup passes fire-​safety standards, but it’s got character and is kind of delightful. It had me imagining them moving to a bigger space and setting up a proper labyrinth.
But I digress. The bagels are the important thing here, and they are good. I had an onion bagel, and a sesame. Both were fresh, and I ate one plain and the other with a smear of cream cheese. Fairmount offers a small menu of spreads – they’ll put a pat of butter or a smear of cream cheese, that sort of thing – but the bagels are pretty good on their own.
Since Montréal and New York are reputed to have a bagel rivalry, I’ll note that the bagels at Fairmount are smaller (50−70% smaller) than their NY counterparts, less salty, chewier. I loved the size – it meant I could try two here then walk over to St-​Viateur for a couple more! – but I liked NY-​style bagels better in the end. The NY-​style, with its size and thickness, is more versatile, and it’s shell had more pull while its body is fluffier. Sorry Montréal. You’re still wonderful.

It’s not that the bagel was bad. In fact, it was quite good! I just had a bagel from a place two blocks away and had a nice warm sesame bagel. I got the everything bagel here, and although good, it was not as fresh tasting as the one I just had. This one had no place at all to eat the bagels and the entryway to order the bagels was quite cramped. They have a lot more variety than the other place though. The bagel here is different than in the States, where they look fatter. The ones here are skinnier so the hole in the center is bigger.
You can purchase cream cheese (Philadelphia) for 50 cents.

Le bagel c’est un incontournable à Montréal, alors quand le roi du bagel à sa boutique, l’arrêt est obligatoire.
La boutique est toute petite avec des tonnes de bagels. Un large choix qui fait que l’on peut rester quelques minutes à hésiter, c’est mon cas du moins (désolée pour les autres clients).
En sortant, les bagels sont encore tout chauds, difficile de résister…

Adorateur du bagel, il fallait absolument que j’en teste un. J’ai jeté mon dévolu pour le Fairmount Bagel.
À Quelques pas de la rue Laurier dans le quartier du Mile-​End, vous y découvrirez différentes variétés de bagels: sésame, nature, sucrée et même au chocolat, il est possible de commander des garnis (mais un peu plus cher).
Vous pouvez acheter à l’unité, par 6 et par 12.
Ouvert tous les jours, Fairmount Bagel est victime de son succès: il se peut qu’il y ait du monde à certains moment de la journée. Mais comme le service est vraiment rapide, vous pourrez déguster votre bonheur très vite :)
En bref, un lieu «incontournable» fortement à conseiller !

Une institution dans Montréal. Le roi du bagel.
Que dire? un petit shop tout mignon, tu rentres c’est rempli de bagel partout, la folie du bagel … une grosse offre, plein de parfums différents.
J’ai tenté celui à l’oignon, celui à l’ail, le bretzel à la NY, et bagels sucrés.
Je reste assez mitigé avec le bagel, je trouve souvent cela trop sec, pas assez aéré, les bagels étaient assez bons, mais limite j’ai préféré le bretzel.
Quant aux bagels sucrés, ce n’est plus des bagels, mais un biscuit tout dur qui croque, ça fait bizarre.
Comme c’est un shop, et que c’est tout petit, on se sent très vite oppressé lorsqu’il faut faire son choix, et forcément on né fait pas le bon choix, et ça débite, c’est fast, on enchaîné très vite, à peine le temps de faire sa commande, on est servi et remercié.
Pour une institution, j’imaginais plus cela comme une succursale du bagel, avec mise en avant du produit, mais au final bof, on voit les mecs trimer derrière le comptoir, la cuisine est ouverte, et ça fait plus «entrepôt» de bagel quand on arrive à l’intérieur plutôt que shop.

Bizarre… je n’avais jamais été sur place pour un bagel… Moi qui adore les bagel.bref. Et bien, j’ai manqué quelque chose dans ma vie de Montréalaise. Ce sera la première visite de plusieurs à venir. Bagel tout chaud, tout frais. pour moins de 1 $. Ouvert 24h possibilité de garnir le bagel… (J’en veux un autre svp) Bref, à essayer absolument

Ouvert depuis 1919 et ensuite déménage en 1949, ici sur Fairmount, c’est l’un des classiques de Montréal, le #1 à mon avis pour les bagels, ouvert 24h/​7j, près de 20 sortes de bagels, frais et chaud sortant du four à bois, fait à la main, le tout pour emporter ou déguster dans la rue en marchant. 1 sésame/​pavot, unité 90¢, 6 bagels pour 4,10 $, 12 bagels pour 7,75 $ ! Enjoy ! ⁵⁄₅. Visité en janvier 2015.

To be honest, I was disappointed by their bagels. I was told that Montréal bagels could not compare with NY bagels. If I could generalize from this experience, I would say it’s true. Ridiculously true.
Places like Ess-​a-​bagel and Murray Bagels
have ridiculously good sandwiches. Really, I never knew sandwiches could be this good: they are, after all, only slices of stuff between two halves of bread. Those NY bagels elevate sandwiches. By contrast, I got at Fairmount Bagel a simple sandwich. It was good, but there wasn’t the the pezzaz that I’ve come to expect from bagels. Also, the bread was really doughy.
One of the major advantages of this place is that it’s cheap: 6,5 CAD for a salmon sandwhich? Yes please! Otherwise, I’ll stick to poutine.

Ces bagels sont certainement les meilleurs de la ville. Ils sont frais et restent bons plusieurs jours après les avoir achetés, ce qui n’est pas forcément le cas ailleurs. Beaucoup de choix de saveurs, mon favori reste celui cannelle/​raisins. Le service est très efficace.

Les bagels sont tellement bons et frais qu’on peut les manger sans rien dessus! L’endroit est un peu petit, mais ouvert en tout temps! C’est un classique à Montréal!

Voici la critique la plus courte que j’ai écris à ce jour :
Les bagels de Fairmount sont les meilleurs de Montréal. Les bagels de Montréal sont meilleurs que ceux de New-​York.

Quand on me demande si je déménagerais de Montréal pour aller ailleurs il y a souvent deux trucs que je réponds: 1. Ça dépend de la place 2. Ça dépend aussi si je peux amener une valise pleine de bagels du Fairmount Bagel avec moi.
Je suis une bagel addict depuis mon plus jeune âge et je fais officiellement partie de la Fairmount team. Ils sont légèrement plus sucré, mais pas avec du sucre! Avec du miel. Et cette petite fin sucrée me rend des plus heureuses. Il faut les manger chaud, c’est le seul moyen de vraiment les aimer et bien sûr avec sésame pour un côté plus traditionnel. Prenez une boîte de fromage à la crème Liberté en passant! Vous aurez le meilleur repas qui soit!
En passant, ils sont collés au Kem CoBa. Après vos bagels, ça vaut la peine d’aller se chercher une glacé. :)

Quand on parle «bagel» dans le nord-​est du continent, le débat devient presque religieux. C’est peut-​être la nostalgie qui nous fait aimer davantage les bagels de notre région, mais pour moi «Fairmount Bagel» est LA référence. Je né trouve que peu d’intérêts aux modèles New Yorkais ou de la Nouvelle-​Angleterre. Désolé.
J’arrête souvent ici en chemin à des heures impossibles (nul besoin de planifications, c’est toujours ouvert) et je prends une douzaine de bagels sau sésame (le modèle standard) tout juste sorti du four à bois et j’en profite pour acheter un contenant de fromage à la crème «Liberté» (de loin meilleur que le Philadelphia).
Fait inusité… quand ils sont chauds, les bagels au sésame me rappelent le boule au sésame chinoise!

Le meilleur bagel en ville à mon humble avis!
Les anneaux juifs sont toujours frais et chauds sortis du four. Moi, j’achète toujours le classique aux graines de sésame. Garni de fromage à la crème Liberté et de saumon fumé, c’est aussi bon pour le petit déjeuner que pour le lunch!

Argents comptant seulement. Desfois il y a une petite file d’attente, c’Est donc pratique à savoir avant de rentrer dans ce fou embullant qui est mortel dans les jours d’été. Le staff est rapide et expéditif. Belle ambiance d’Excitation des locaux qui sentent qu’ils accomplissent un acte de tradition absolu et le touriste qui écoute et qui sent qu’il vit une expérience mystico-​montréalaise. Je dois admettre que j’achète mes bagels du Fairmount au Costco en paquet de 3 sizaines. C’est très sympathique manger un bagel frais du jour. Je dois dire que j’ai une place de Bagel dans le Marché de l’ouest aussi bon (Hansel Bagel) qui est aussi bon. J’ignore le mystiscisme du Bagel à Montréal et je dirais même à New York. Je pense que c’est principalement du à ces traditions culinaires hébraïques dont nous montréalais de sang ou de coeur avons développé une expertise, un amour absolu.
Un Bagel c’Est comme une méga-​toast nourrissante et il y a de nombreuse sorte et biensur de tradition développé à ce sujet. Saumon, Fromage à la crème. Mon préféré c’est fromage de chèvre et jambon polonais ou bacon, cheddar orange demi-​fort.
Prochain arrêt le St-​Viateur pour voir lequel est le plusssee meilleur.

I actually bought a dozen of these bagels back to Buffalo, NY to share with my co-​workers and every single person that got a bagel loved it.
They also say its different from all the bagels they have ate. I told them its Montréal style bagels, not sure what that means, but either way they loved it.
I’ll be back when I’m in town and will bring back more than a dozen, because the dozen I brought back Did not last and alot of people were wondering if I had more.
