generic selection of used records. the listening station is a cramped nightmare to use, perhaps intentionally to discourage customers from using it.

Good selections and variety, but a little over priced for some items… overall, great store

I don’t know if counterfeit LPs are common in Canada but here is my experience I had a very bad experience here. I bought some albums here and brought them home. I though they were sealed 70’s 80’s albums at a good price. I opened them up and found the were complete fakes. I mean more counterfeits. Some donny Hathaway and some less desirable jazz pressings that would normally have been cheaper. These counterfeits. Now I know the difference Between a david Bowie bootleg and a Bön dylan bootleg from Europe. I even bought a nice Neil young bootleg from this store but they sell counterfeits. I’ve bought many older less desired jazz /soul/folks sealed pressings that were 20 years old and were originals for about 20 $. The LPs here at beat nick records are European Imports that have the same dead wax, same label, same markings as the originals and no way to tell that they are real fake other than opening them and realizing they are too new to be real. This shop conveniently double wraps all the albums. I called today to tell them my concerns and ask for a refund. They we’re very rude. They«explained» that this was common knowledge and that«I should know this if I was a serious collector with knowledge and go to my local shop and ask them» well where I live they don’t sell cheap bootleg copies. The whole shop is rife with doxy bootlegs and such that are cheap and very poorly pressed. I was very close to buying a 300 $ «original pressing» of a Miles Davis prestige album. I explained that how was I supposed to know if it was real if this shop had fakes everywhere. The guy on the phone then said«do your research» he said that he could actually not call them knockoffs because they were«really not» that the companies made them look exactly like the originals. Sooo fakes. No the albums I bought from them were fakes from Europe that were the same from original pressing marking down to the exact dead wax etchings. He said they were pressings that were made before the«vinyl boom» which is a lie these pressings are from 2013 – 2015 and he said that the labels just gave up the rights to these albums which is false. European pressing companies like doxy press cheap bootlegs. How could one possibly trust a store that is supposedly selling original pressings and then knockoffs that are exactly replicated to the dead wax etchings and labels etc. They had fake soul fake jazz fake folk fake everything. They were also trying to sell original Canadian jazz pressings that were worth two dollars at most at the price of an original us jazz pressing. It’s pretty sad that you go into a shop that sells fakes then they admit that after you consider buying a original jazz pressing from the 50’s that you«should do your research» pretty bad policy! They have some ok stuff because it’s all cheap and fake. I’ve been collecting for 20 years and to have a shop guy tell me to «do my research» after he sells fake copies down to the exact detail when I want to buy an original pressing of a 300 $ jazz album is very disheartening. If you go here I would not buy any«original pressings» because as the guy said«you should do your research» There are much better shops in Montréal that have better selections and at least can be trusted. Pretty much con artists. Whom admitted they were selling fake original pressings. Just realize that there are some nice albums here but don’t trust them with original pressings if they are selling fakes. Easy enough to slip a fake into an old album cover and sell it for 200 $ more than it’s worth pretty sad!

Nice little spot with a good variety of records. I snagged two Jethro Tull albums from here yesterday for under $ 10! Friendly and helpful service, I will be back.

I’ve ducked into a few stores in Montréal and have often been overwhelmed by the prices(usually double-digits for run-of-the-mill titles). Beatnick is the first place where I thought some things were actually cheaper than normal! Maybe it was because of their condition, but I found some great deals. The selection is decent. Not huge, but some quality titles and the bilingual staff seemed very helpful.

Like the song says, «You can’t always get what you want,» but the guys at Beatnick sure do try hard, and, who knows, «you just might find you get what you need.» The scope of their collection is impressive, especially if you’re into rock, modern rock, soul, sixties, Franco pop and prog, country, and oldies. Primitive + Beatnick has long been an important record shopping combo for me. Great rotating(sometimes literally) window displays, too.

They sure do make the most of a small store… er, basement. They owner gave me some freebies and was very helpful. The bi-lingual staff was out smoking and we were left alone digging for some johnny cash, but we compared record stores and curtis mayfield and in general it was very pleasant. The best place to find French and 1960s vinyl. I can see myself spending long hot summer afternoons here.
