Our first visit to the Trellis Café was quite by accident… off for a Sunday drive on old Highway 3 led us to stop for coffee on our way to Chester. The service and atmosphere was such that we stopped on our way back for a light supper… and pie, of course. The salads were fresh and had some of the best strawberries I’ve had in a very long while. Served with big smiles and the pleasantries you hope for at a quaint little village café. The waitress was excellent… attentive, charming and never intrusive. The crowning glory was some delicious key lime pie… homemade of course! We will certainly be back!

We like the Trellis a lot! We found it quite by accident when we were starving for breakfast on the road between Halifax and Lunenburg. Good thing for us. It’s a very casual, comfy roadside restaurant that is evidently popular with locals(the parking had 13 cars with Nova Scotia plates and ours). We sat on the trellis-covered patio and ordered a couple of big breakfasts, and we were delighted with everything, starting with the hot tea, served in a cosy with matching cups. Very nice. A lot of what we ate was homemade, including the thick, chewy bread that was delicious when spread with the local jam. The poached egg(from a local farm) was cooked just right, and the potatoes were a perfect accompaniment. The place was crowded but our service was quick, and our server Nicole couldn’t have been more friendly — and curious about us. The Trellis is about 1.5 miles off Rt. 103 in Hubbards. And by the way, it’s licensed, so if you’re there for lunch or dinner, indulge. Or, we suppose, if you need a breakfast boost that doesn’t include caffeine…

Stopped by for lunch/dinner and tried the Halibut and Sweet Potato Curry — Excellent and service was great! Wish I had room for the homemade desserts! They use organic foods and fresh seafood.

Fish cakes have potatoes and onions but no fish. Seafood chowder had potatoes that were under done and seafood that was over done. Caesar salad was very good. Service was below average. Will not go back.

Spent a few nights in a friends cabin very close to here. We were going to buy bread and such and make ourselves breakfast, but the first morning we ate here. And then we were hooked. Great breakfast. Very nice lady serving us. And the homemade bread is to die for.

The Trellis Café is one of my favorites locally for consistently high quality Nova Scotia«home cooking». Choice local ingredients, especially seafood and local produce, a talented kitchen, an excellent menu, an inviting environment, and owners who care about food make for a good meal whenever one comes to Hubbards.

My family and I got lost on our drive to Yarmouth — and by lost I mean, we really took the road less travelled. But — that road brought us to Trellis! The very quaint, comfortably-classy restaurant was pretty empty during our visit — with only one other table seated. This left lots of time for my Uncle to talk up our server about the grape vines wrapped around the trellis above the patio. He was in all of his glory, although I’m not sure she was. The menu was a decent size, lots of choices, but a little on the pricy side. I seen lots of things I would have liked to try — I went with the fish burger, which was divine! and I really, really, enjoyed their potatoes — we all did! If I ever unexpectedly end up in the area again I will be sure to pop in!

Waited 40 min for a lobster roll, clubhouse, and kids grilled cheese. Slightly busy, but not enough to justify the wait. The sandwiches as it turned where excellent. However we went in at 12:30 and left at 1:45. Way too long waiting especially with kids. Also over priced. Just because they won at taste of Nova Scotia award does not in my mind give them the right to over charge. Many other excellent restaurants have won more prestigious awards and charge ¾ the price. End damage; Lobster Roll $ 20, Club House $ 14, kids Grilled Cheese $ 8 + fries $ 3 = too expensive.

Stopped at the Trellis today on our Saturday motorcycle tour and really enjoyed our lunch. Todd had the lamb burger with apricot chutney and I ordered a half avocado sandwich with a side orange/almond/raisin salad. Todd has apparently never had /heard of chutney before. I reassured him he’d probably like it, as it is nothing like mayo, and this one should be sweet. The burger came with a generous dollop of it, to which Todd added a blob of ketchup… which he regretted as soon as he bit in. He enjoyed the burger tremendously(and was impressed with the home cooked multigrain bun). I tasted the lamb and found it very mild. I like my lamb a little punchier, what, whatever, it wasn’t my meal. The avocado sandwich came on home-made thick brown bread. It featured creamy pesto with red pepper jelly in addition to the avocado and some romaine. OH. MAH. GAWD. If there is a vegetarian out there who hasn’t yet tried this(and I’m actually not a veg, but I used to be), you owe it to yourself to get out there. So good! It was sweet, creamy, tasty heaven. Totally worth the drive. The salad was tasty too, although it hearkened me back to late 70s Weight Watchers with the mandarin oranges and romaine. Very sweet, but yummy. So many people hate raisins… I just don’t get it. We indulged in a split dessert too, a Chocolate Peanut Brittle Pie. I think I’ve already gushed enough here. I think it was thawed from frozen, but it was so darn tasty, I can’t fault them. A little heavy on the whipped cream. Okay, I’m stretching for some negativity here. The best comment on the pie was Todd’s: «Why can’t every pie be that good?» I guess they’re just not trying hard enough.

I go for their New Years dinner every year, and It has been better every year I have attended. I loved going to hear Morgan Davis, but lately he has been MIA. I highly recommend this local dinner, for the eclectic artwork and the great atmosphere. Close to the beach, and my families home in the country.

My party of four enjoyed this place a lot. Brittany, the waitress gave top-flight service on a very busy summer evening. Best of all was the local entertainment/jam session. Quite a few area musicians appeared and put on a very good musical show with guitars, violin, drums, concertina, spoons and great amateur singing. There was a lively, friendly atmosphere and all of us would readily return to the Trellis. The food was delicious, too!

During the summer months, there are a handful of things that I live for: — Road trips out of the city The Simple Life style, minus the whole being a rich asshole. — Breakfast cafés that know what’s up when it comes to morning carbs. — Unexpected business gems that remind city slickers that there are cool places every where, not just nestled in between skyscrapers. The Trellis combines all three, not even an hour outside of the city, mere minutes from Queensland Beach. I’ve only been for breakfast and cappuccinos but they walk an awesome balance between homecooked glory and bistro details that really just hits the spot after exploring the shores of beautiful Hubbards or hitting the local antique circuit. I, not surprisingly, am always hit by the siren’s song of the Eggs Florentine which consistently comes piping hot and perfectly poached with a healthy portion of homefries. Sometimes it can be a little slow to arrive, but hey — you’re on a staycation so just chillax, right?

The Trellis Café is a popular spot along the Hubbards road. It can get very busy here, especially with the outside patio for the summer. The food here is made fresh and is very tasty. I enjoy the salad with a nice glass of wine. You will also be able to catch some live music here, they often have different musicians playing, wonderful lunch and dinner music. It is a very quaint restaurant.

Our waitress at Trellis made our day when we ate there this past summer. She was so cute and helpful, offering up advice to my out-of-towner aunt and uncle, indulging their questions about where to find seashells and which beaches we should visit. Along with the good service, we had a nice meal too. I wasn’t blown away by my sandwich, which sounded a lot better than it tasted. Bread was unexciting and pretty fluffy for a whole grain, toppings weren’t plentiful, but overall it was pretty good for a roadside gamble! I’d stop here again, if only for the chance to finish eating and wander over to the antique shop next door. Holy cow, I could dress up a house quite well if I were free to take a few things from there… The vine-covered patio is another good reason to stop here, if it’s nice enough weather to eat outdoors. So Trellis is a fine place to grab a bite, just don’t get TOO excited when a menu item sounds amazing; it may not taste as good as it reads.

What a lovely way to spend a sunny Saturday after you’ve wandered through Hubbards Farmers Market. Soft jazz in the background, indoors or on the patio the service is friendly and food delish. We’ve been to this popular spot a couple of times and it’s worth the drive from Halifax. Breakfast, lunch and dinner have dishes that will appeal to all. The seafood crepes were delicious and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his burger. We’ve never been for dinner, but it’s on my list of things to do. I always love a restaurant that favors locally produced meat, fish, seafood and produce… not to mention artisan cheeses and bread.
