With at least five food trucks opening up mobile shop in the HRM in the past year, I think it’s safe to say that the food truck scene is finally catching on here in a significant way. Opening up in mid-June on Argyle St, between the convention centre and the Grand Parade, Under Pressers is one of the latest entrants, with a menu focused on a handful of panini sandwiches and a few sides to go with. On the day of my visit, the menu consisted of four paninis(pulled pork, smoked meat, chicken tarragon and Italian cold cuts), a gourmet corn dog, fries and poutine, and funnel cake for dessert, and the requisite drinks. I’ve been getting the creeping feeling that pulled pork is starting to jump the shark now that Burger King and Subway have it, so I gravitated toward a large chicken tarragon with fries. This came to a reasonable $ 12 and I didn’t have long to wait since I had beaten the lunch rush of office drones pouring out at noon. I laid claim to a picnic table in the Grand Parade to eat and people watch on a day which while not sunny, it wasn’t raining, so that was a victory unto itself. The panini was a good size, more than a couples hands in area, with nice grill press marks on the outside. It was slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside from bread that was just the right thickness to hold everything together. Herby chicken was fairly plentiful and moist, while mushrooms added a pleasant chew and flavour from whatever they were cooked with(wine? they were kinda reddish). Some chard added a bit of green to an otherwise dull coloured sandwich, and while there was some mozza, there wasn’t enough to be pull apart stringy. Also, it would have been difficult to pull apart since this large sandwich was unfortunately not cut in half. All in all though, it was a well rounded, albeit still rectangular, sandwich. The fries probably stood out the most for me. Hand-cut but very crispy(from them being double fried, I found out afterward on the interwebs) and with a good potato flavour, these are fine examples of what a well executed hand-cut fry can be. A solid entry into the local food truck scene, I look forward to Under Pressers getting just a little more polished and stretching their creative muscles a bit more.
