I’ve only recently discovered this joint as I’ve just moved to the South end. I’ve been here three times. Twice, I was sober and looking for poutine. I really enjoyed theirs. While it is not tradition, with cheese curds — I really enjoy the gravy, and there is a lot of cheese — so it’s tasty. The other time I was a little intoxicated, and grabbed a slice and a drink for 5 $(not a bad price). I really enjoyed that they put shawarma garlic sauce on the crust for me. Cheap, greasy food. Perfect for a quick bite.

AWESOME food. There, I said it. Uncle Buck’s has very delicious pizza, donairs, and much more. They have a huge variety of food to choose from(their menu is gigantic) and I’ve never been let down by anything that I’ve ordered from them. Their prices are also fairly decent. I would place them around slightly lower than average, which is surprising considering the quality of the food. Delivery times are very unpredictable from Uncle Buck’s. Of all places I have ordered from, they have proven to be the most unreliable. You may get your food in forty minutes… or two hours after ordering. As a resident of West End Halifax, I’m also a bit irked by their franchise locations. There are several in Halifax, and they all say that they don’t deliver to my location because I am too far away and that I should call another of their locations. What? Really? I’m just off of Bayers Road, so I’m hardly in some kind of remote area, but yet none of their locations will want to deliver to me unless I just give them a VERY vague idea as to where I live and then let the delivery guy figure it out. If I tell them exactly where I am, they won’t deliver to me. I don’t understand this at all, as many places will deliver to me without any problems. Their on phone service varies. There is one employee who is always nice to have serve you over the phone, but usually Uncle Buck’s employees seem to want to speed through your order and it just doesn’t make me feel good as a customer. There is also a delivery charge, which often feels like a slap in the face after the poor on phone service and extremely shoddy delivery range of their franchises. I would really recommend Uncle Buck’s to anyone who lives near one of their establishments, but if you can’t walk there and the delivery driver has to drive for longer than ten minutes to reach you… Don’t even think of it, because you will apparently be out of range of all of their locations somehow. Go with another pizza place, because their delivery range and delivery times are not worth the hassle.

There’s not a whole lot to say about this place other than that, while it’s not terrible by any means, it’s nothing particularly special either. Just a whole lotta mediocre. The first time I dropped by, a few weeks ago, I ordered one of their slices that I think must have been sitting under the heat lamp for WAY too long, as it was hard and dry with only slightly more flavour than cardboard. But what can you do, I was hungry and in a hurry to get back to work, and taste bud pleasing or no, it succeeded in filling the void. My second encounter with this shop involved ordering their vegetarian pizza and garlic fingers to share among friends. This time, being fresh, the pizza was tastier, again not what I would call memorable, but decent. The garlic fingers were also good, and about on par with the pizza.

I like to think of myself as a learned voice(emphasis on the«ed» when you read that) on pizza in Halifax. I’ve eaten nearly everywhere including that really frightening place on Gottingen. You know which one I’m talking about. Uncle Buck’s definitely has its charms but as far as quality goes, I wouldn’t place it in my top three. If you live in the South End, Uncle Buck’s is one of the more convenient pizza shops so when you’re stumbling — I mean soberly walking — home after a night downtown, I suggest you head for Buck’s and avoid the line up at Pizza Corner or Venus. Think of it this way: you’re closer to home, your pizza is warmer and you’ve slightly sobered up so you can really appreciate the cheese party you’re about to ingest. The guys at Uncle Buck’s are really cool with the late night crowd and always make sure there’s some hot pizza ready to go. In the afternoon their attention is a little less focused so I wouldn’t expect any culinary delights. I suggest having cash on you because their debit machine, while functioning, gouges you on the surcharges. No pizza is worth that extra coin. Well, OK, some pizza can be. Oh, and if you need a cab they’re a LOT easier to call/catch on South Park Street than on Barrington. Just sayin’.

Now that Little Caesar’s is closed, downtown Halifax doesn’t have a single place that sells affordable pizza. Pizza here is insanely expensive compared to Ontario. Sadly that seems to be true about almost everything in this city, especially eating out. Uncle Bucks is close to where I live and sells decent pizza. I usually just get their ready to go slices, whatever they have at the moment. The vegetarian one is really very good, despite the fact that I’m usually a meat lover. What I don’t like about it: 1. The pizza isn’t spectacular. 2. The prices — see above. 3. The fact that they charge you an extra 50¢ for debit purchases without ever telling you and without being told about that on the PIN terminal. This is against Interac business guidelines.

My only encounters with this pizza joint have been on late nights on my way home from the Halifax night scene. It’s a little bit out of the way for some people, but if you have to walk down South Park Street on your way home this is a great spot to check out. You wont have to wait in line, it doesn’t get that busy because it’s a little removed from the bar closing crowd. My personal favorite order is a large poutine. It’s a big helping, so you’ll make fans among your friends when you show up at a post party with enough to share. There are lost of great takeout deals, and everything is pretty cheap, a great place to order from to feed a big group of people for cheap. Hot Hint: It might be pretty late to stay up, but if you can make it to 5am the staff will be more than happy to sell you slices for a buck as they close down.

Uncle Buck’s gets extra points for convenience from me. It’s about half a block away from my house, you see. I don’t necessarily recommend heading to Uncle Buck’s if it’s 7pm and you’re sober… but if it’s 3am and you’re on your way home and can’t stomach the thought of going to bed without something greasy to eat… then Uncle Buck’s is for you my friend! ‘Bucks often has nightly specials including 2 cheeseburgers and a fries for $ 4.99. Expect ‘stadium style’ food. Nothing gourmet, but sometimes just a simple burger can be just what you’re looking for. Pizza by the slice is also available. Uncle Bucks offers delivery as well if you don’t happen to live as close by as I do.
