Great date place. Always interesting, adventurous, and tasty. I see the vegetarian label in the Unilocal header, but I seem to remember having roast beef, chicken, and fish here at various times over the years. Though I will confirm there are always interesting veggie options that can tempt me away from the meat dishes. Not many restos can do that.

Wonderful vegetarian cuisine. Good service, nice, bright ambience. Had the gingered tofu: great salty-sweet tanginess. I would lose the turnip or whatever — but that’s a personal preference. Also had the tasty bean hummus. Definitely recommended for vegetarians. Carnivorous friends can also find meaty options on the menu.

Delicious vegetarian food. Service bit slow as it was crowded. Ambience isn’t too great but food is so doesn’t matter. We ordered veggie pizza and minestrone soup. For dessert raspberry hot brownie vanilla which I didn’t like much nor it was worth money so 1 star less for it. But I would really recommend this restaurant.

Absolutely fantastic. The lentil burger was incredible and filling in the best way(I felt really full but not like I was stuffed with things I couldn’t pronounce). This was my first time here, and it makes me sad to know that the construction surrounding the restaurant is really affecting the business. This is probably one of the best restaurants in Halifax(in my opinion).I recommend it to everyone! Great for anyone.

Trendy. Hipster. Blah Blah. «Did you like your ‘roasties’?» Lady, they were burnt french fries. Get over yourself.

The food here is good aswell as the environment. The portions aren’t the biggest but its quality food overtime. The only thing that turned me off of this restaurant a little bit was this weird server. His humour threw me right off, but he was a nice guy lol

Tried the lamb burger with roasties. Not that great. Lamb was bland and there was too much goat cheese. The place itself has character and the wait staff was very friendly.

Mmm sangria! Their food is excellent, but if you’re feeling hungry their portion sizes are pretty small, so you may want to get an appetizer or dessert too! Had the fish cakes, with a salad and home made salad dressing. As well as their nachos. Loved it all!

I went there with a dear friend of mine. I must admit the guy was friendly as he greeted us. so anyways I had the apple spliced salad, the blueberry drink and Margerita pizza and can’t remember what he had think it was a burger and beer Anyways…problems when there 1. From our stay the guy there visited our table 12 times [counted] 3 of which was to order food, drinks and then bringing our dishes out. he was trying to serve us the best he can but we had the impression that he was hovering and constantly coming back and not giving us some window space 2. You do NOT tell me that this Margerita pizza is freshly cooked. me and my friend see the markings under the crust to signify it’s frozen, and would it kill ya to put FRESH basil? this stuff was shriveled and that the sauce had nothing to it. also the apple slice salad was good but the problem is A. the plate was way too small to carry everything in it and B. too many flavors combating againest each other, the sweetness from the apple slices, the nuttiness of the walnuts, the cream pinch of the goat cheese and the bitter taste of the greens. also the Blueberry drink was too sour and without pepsi/coke products… No I’m sorry but the food was crap to us, the waiter though in his best intentions felt like he was clinging to us and that all of it was way too expensive [40 bucks for my stuff and 19 from him] and though I reluctantly tipped a 10… No Wooden Monkey gets no points from me

Went there for dinner and had a vegetarian curry and added the local fresh scallops. Hmmmm!!! It was so so delicious! The flavours were just heavenly and you could taste the freshness of all the ingredients. The scallops were cooked to perfection! The restaurant has two levels, we sat upstairs and it’s such a cool place there. All the tables and chairs are different. The interior boasts a rustic and comfortable feel and there is so much to look at and to enjoy! Every single individual of the staff is super friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home. I highly recommend this place!

For this visit I tried their Bacon Cheese Burger. I have to give the Wooden Monkey props for creating their own unique bun, despite the structural flaws. I’ve encountered so many plain white buns, so coming across something like this is always a nice surprise. This burger didn’t disappoint me, there was just a couple small things that I wasn’t a huge fan of. I plan on making a return visit at some point in the future to try one of their non-beef burger options.

Excellent quality food. I have enjoyed everything I tried at The Wooden Monkey. I suggest trying either of their haddock, both are great. Any salad you order here will be quality. Good service. One of their servers is a bit weird, but he’s still very efficient. Really nice feel to the place. I like the upstairs more, but both are great. The sandwiches do not have enough chicken in them. Tried both, the Monkey Pita and the chicken pesto sandwich, both tasted phenomenal. But they were lacking in chicken. I suppose I should have asked to double up on the chicken and pay for it(I would not have minded). Perhaps this is an option that should be advertised on the menu. Quality spot. I would love to rate it higher, but everything I order is too small of a serving. Bigger portions, even if this reflected an increase in their prices — would be a step in the right direction.

An ideal date spot! Cozy and small but not *too* small, an intimate café style topped with a small stone alcove illuminated by a dozen or so flickering tealights. Food is organic and fairly sourced, if your date is someone attuned to that sort of thing. Craving a lighter meal after a long rainy day, I opted for the soup with a side of sweet apple salad. The soup menu changes daily, and I happened on a day featuring a chickpea one. Though I usually thoroughly dislike chickpeas, I actually enjoyed this one as it wasn’t the predominant taste. The salad was good too, with thin matchsticks of apple over greens and lightly dressed. This was washed down with locally-made, organic Propeller Ginger Beer. The hubs picked a pork chop with a wild blueberry chutney, which he waxed poetic about for the next hour or two. He was happily surprised to find the portion to be «regular» restaurant sized(as in: a lot of organic produce and items tend to run on the smaller side). We left with warm and happy bellies.

I reallllyyyy loved this restaurant! I have celiac disease and I am SOOOOOO very sensitive to cross-contamination of gluten and they did such a wonderful job of providing me a filling meal that did not bother me at all. Furthermore, the person I was out to dinner with is allergic to egg plant and is a pescatarian. Given that we both have high dietary needs, they did such a great job of accommodating and providing us with DELICIOUS meals for reasonable price and amazing quality. I would recommend anyone with allergies or issues to go here and just notify they staff — they will make sure you get a great restaurant experience with no issues and really take your needs to heart. The ambiance was excellent as well!

Well 3.5 stars — bought a groupon to try this place. Lots of options on the menu, definitely caters to folks with particular dietary needs. Food was delicious. Caution though, I had the scallops pasta and the creamy sauce was so rich. My boyfriend had the lentil burger, delicious, but we didn’t know we were getting charged for the special side salad. I would return to try something else on the menu. Staff was friendly. Environment so loud though, to be fair, it was a packed house on a Saturday evening, you’d need to raise your voice to have a conversation.

Great ambience. Great food philosophy. Lentil burger was awesome. Fish and roasties was good though the fish was a tad dry. Good sending of beers including hippy dippy pale ale. Check it out.

I’m late to the Wooden Monkey party. I know. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been meaning to go just never got there. So when my best friend said she was coming to Halifax for a visit, and there was a great Groupon for the Wooden Monkey I was all over it. I love a good deal and I love her so of course I was all about it. I’m so glad we are deal hunting friends because we had a great night here. I’m one of those people that is always on the hunt for the best nachos, the best burger, best whatever. I’d have to say that the Wooden Monkey is up there for best Nachos. These things were amazing! They got the cheese layering just right along with the toppings, sides. It was a master piece. That atmosphere is intimate and classy, the lighting was dim for the dinner crowd and there are large windows in case your date is boring and you want to people watch. Don’t act like you don’t do it.

I’ve meant to try this place for over a year, after mixed reviews, just to see for myself. On a chilly winter Thursday, I decided to stop in around 4:00 with time to kill before an evening appointment. Two tables were taken upon my arrival, out of maybe a dozen in total?(there may be an upstairs in this restaurant too, I saw a flight of stairs, but didn’t ask or investigate, so that could just be nothing). Matching with the name, a lot of the décor in here is wood… mix & matched table sets, I think a stone fireplace. Not sure if it’s accessible or not, with the main dining area up a few steps to the right. Very friendly service. I was lucky to arrive at happy hour so had a glass of a nice L’Acadie pinot grigio for $ 5. Good, and different Raw tacos(Nappa wrapped spicy sundried tomato, walnut mushroom ‘meat’, fresh salsa, pine nut ‘sour cream’ and guacamole. vegan $ 6.75 for one). I didn’t realize from the menu description that they have no tortilla, but are served as a lettuce wrap. A bit expensive for just a few bites, but still good nonetheless. The Vegetable Curry(mushrooms, toasted quinoa, raisins, curry coconut, macadamia nut paste, sweet potato sticks and cilantro. vegan $ 23)was very good and filling with lots of flavor, but definitely more expensive than what you’d pay elsewhere for a similar dish. I think the mark-up is quite high here. But yes, I will go back and try another dish, such as the lentil burger and a few other yummy-sounding items.

We came here for lunch during our Halifax trip a couple of months back. I had the vegan Triple Taco plate and ½ pint of Propeller IPA. My wife had the Chickpea Salad. We both really enjoyed what we ordered, and we liked the décor as well as our server. Two thumbs up.

Eating at The Wooden Monkey is a bit like eating in someone’s super cozy home. Especially if you happen to know someone who has a cozy home and likes to make vegan food. While they aren’t fully vegan there are so many options to choose from in that arena that it’s especially easy to eat on the lighter side of the menu here. On a recent lunch adventure I ordered a simple salad, a side of tofu, and«roasties» which are essentially baked fries. The house salad is seasonal and requires you ask the server each day. This, to me, just signals it’s super fresh. The tofu portion was giant and the marinade on it was great. The roasties were oven-baked with olive oil and seasonings and a nice way to enjoy a potato. Don’t overlook their unique drink list, both alcoholic and non!
