As soon as I read the Unilocal reviews for Schooner Books, I knew I had to go. After a very hectic day, I was only able to get there about 30 minutes before it closed and that was nowhere near enough time. I beelined it to the two sections that I love the most — travel and cars. There was an incredible amount of travel books, many very old and interesting. The staff member apologized that they didn’t have too many car related books, but it was actually one of the best sections I’ve seen. I’ve started collecting books about motorsports and racing history and found two great books about the early days of racing, which were published in the ‘50s. They are gems. Prices weren’t cheap — each book was $ 20, but I literally can’t even find anything online anywhere about these books, so they are definitely rare. I’d love to go back with my wife and spend a good couple of hours looking at their collection in more detail.

I have passed this place more times than I can count and I have no idea why I’ve never stepped foot in here. Schooner Books is a great spot for book lovers of all kinds. Equipped with a vast selection of used books, you’ll be sure to find what you’re looking for at a reasonable price. I went in here looking for two books in particular, found them both, and grabbed a third, one that sparked my interest. With that being said, I think I had around six books in my hand before I had to scale it down to the eventual three. Basically, this place had everything I was looking for and than some. I spent 20 dollars, got three novels, and the lady behind the counter(I’m assuming the owner) was lovely. I’m a history and English major and both of these subjects were found in this store. Plenty of history books as well as literature, plays, children’s books, poetry, cook books, geographical books, and many, many more. Check it out!

Yep. Yes. Uh-huh. Its good. This old style home turned book bearer is a lovely addition to Halifax’s South End area. Walking by, Schooner Books can easily be overlooked with its humble semblance; however, its surely a spot to know about. Great range of cheap used books! The space is extensive, giving lots of room to browse and revel amongst its glories. If you have an older, harder to find book in mind, Schooners is definitely a good place to check out. A homey vibe and pondering selection of most genres, the store also buys second hand books. So if you have a few to get rid of, pass them on and make a few dollars. Book lovers will find this a great spot to explore.

Schooner Books seems like the kind of place where, if it were ever going to happen, you would find an enchanted book. It’s an old house converted into a rambling bookstore with shelves full of all sorts of treasures. If you know a book hound, this is a great place to take them to impress, but even if you just find yourself in the neighbourhood one day I recommend stopping in. Prices range from five or ten dollars up into the hundreds for really rare items. And there are some rare items here among the thousands of novels, magazines, textbooks, children’s books and photographs that they have amassed. Beautiful old bindings are everywhere, and that«old book scent» permeates the place. Worth a trip.

Look closely for Schooner because it could be easy to miss. This little store is actually a house-turned-shop, which means it looks exactly like someone’s house from the outside. Inside isn’t much different. There are different rooms that you can go into, some appearing to pop out of nowhere. I was pretty shocked at how large this place was. It seemed so tiny from the outside, but it’s deceivingly large. Schooner specializes in rare and out-of-print books, although I did notice some regular old books there too. They have paper signs indicating which sections are which and what each shelf contains. I was drawn to the mystery section which, oddly enough, was located right next to the children’s section. Once I perused the mysteries I was drawn to the children’s. I found one book that I remember reading when I was a child and was instantly pulled into a state of nostalgia. I think I spent a few minutes reading through it again. There was a nice older couple working the counters. They were both busying themselves on the computers while a couple other folks and I were browsing around. They were cute and the store was cute too. Top notch, I say!
