This place is so delicious my mouth waters just passing it. We found ourselves famished one night circling the city looking for a place to fill our tummies. I always had wondered about this place and heard it was generous portions and delicious. They were correct! The fish was HUGE ! We ordered two pieces which was a mistake lol The fries were homemade hand cut. I loved the batter on the fish! It was crispy and light, not too heavy or breaded. This is now our go to fish and chips spot. I can’t say I have had any better in the city and it is the best fish and chips I have had since I left newfoundland!

I decided to order delivery and i ordered 40 dollars worth of food and they forgot my 3 cans of pop i ordered so i called them to ask if they could bring me them and they said yes they would figure it out. Now take in consideration i only live about 3 to 5 minutes away from the restaurant. I’ve waited 25 minutes then decided to call back maybe they forgot or something but nope they got «busy» it’ll be here soon they said so i waited again for about 30 minutes after that and still no pop. Food was cold and very small portions never again will i ever order from here. Disappointed.

Ugh. Never again! I am so disappointed — I heard good things and was in the area so decided to get take-​out. When I saw the prices I gasped but figured they give generous portions. They don’t.
We got clams and a piece of fish + fries and coleslaw and scallops with fries. The scallop dish didn’t even come with coleslaw — it was $ 1.75 plus tax for what turned out to be SMALL side of it.
It smelled delicious, so we were excited to eat. When we arrived home and opened the containers we were not so pleasantly surprised…
I couldn’t even find the clams at first with the massive amount of fries that came (in proportion with the seafood the fry amount was massive!) I ended up counting maybe 10 clams — maybe — and the piece of fish was in three pieces because it was so soggy it just fell apart. My partner counted around half of a dozen scallops. This let down of a meal cost us $ 40!!!
It was all very tasty, but not enough to make the pain of the price be forgotten.
Also, they use the little packages of tartar sauce. The coleslaw was good though (maybe house made)

I have lived in the city around nine years and somehow, all the times I drove by on the 52, I had never stopped. That changed this past weekend when I stopped conveniently right outside the door.
This I had heard is one of the best places in Halifax for Fish and Chips and I have to say that is half right, the seafood platter was phenomenal, scallops, clams and the huge filet of fish I got were lightly battered and not very greasy. The clams were perfect, I love deep fried clams and the light batter and crispiness was exactly what I personally like.
My only issue with my visit, was the fries. I have not said this before, but perhaps the serving size is a bit too large. I can handle large meals and had trouble finishing. The other thing is they were a little too crispy and disappointingly not handcut. Handcut those fries and perhaps make your own tartar sauce if you do not already and easily would nail five stars.
Oh, as well it was very busy and there isn’t much seating inside however the deck outside has picnic tables which I unfortunately did not get to use due to questionable weather. I imagine a nice warm evening spent there enjoying the fries a bit slower would have been nice.
I’ll have to do that next time, I will be back.

After having driven by this location so many times over the years I have been in this city, I finally stopped in at this location last summer. It is my summer go-​to fish and chip spot now.
I had never stopped previously as I was always in traffic and it didn’t look like there was adequate parking. But fear not, though their parking lot is tiny, parking is plentiful along the side streets around the restaurant.
The fish is fantastic, the clams have always been fresh, and the fries homemade (I think). Though it isn’t the cheapest fish and chips in the city, it is the best that I have tasted. And it is a good price for what you get.
The team that works there seems great and very friendly. I am glad that I finally stopped in — and lament, a little, over the years of yummy fish I missed out on by not stopping in sooner.

I absolutely love this place. It’s my go-​to place for fish and chips in Halifax!
I usually get the 2 piece fish and chips, which is served on a huge bed of fries with two generous pieces of fish. My other favorite is the house special (fries, 1 piece fish, clams and coleslaw). Beware though, sometimes they have trouble getting fresh clams in so if you have your heart set on some clams you may want to call ahead to confirm they have them.
If you aren’t a seafood person don’t worry. They have many other things to choose from all at reasonable prices. So many things, in fact, it’s possible they may have ADD. But that’s ok because from what I’ve tried of the other menu items, they are all just as good as the fish and chips. Their burgers as well as their coconut shrimp are worth trying.
I guarantee you will not leave hungry or disappointed if you eat here!

My boyfriend and I ordered from here last night, and it was great. The portions were generous, and price was right, and even with the delivery time, the fish, the chips, the deep fried dill pickles — they were all crispy and hot and delicious. Well done!

This place is gross, and straight up the guy who delivered my food is rude. I had returned my food once before about a year ago, because when it showed up it was cold. We’ll I ordered from here again tonight and I had shells in my clams, the fish smelled wrong and didn’t taste the way it always has any other time I ate here. When I called to say I wanted to return it, the jerk who delivers raised his voice at me saying «you returned your food once before, I’m not doing to again». He continued to become more upset when I said «no that’s not right», then hung up on me. I gave him a decent tip at the door as we’ll and this is how I was treated. Mister you ticked off the wrong women I will make sure your business gets a bad name for this, and I plan on calling the health bored to investigate why your quality of food have gone down. You use to be my favourite fish & chips place, why did you have to go display such a lack of respect for your customer and the food you serve? You took $ 40 of my money, and served me something I can’t even safely eat… I am clearly not happy with the way I was treated tonight

I’ve had the fish and chips also clams and chips and have to say the best in the city. Not the cheapest but the best tasting. John’s Lunch has nothing on Fries and Co’s clams!

Greasy, tasteless fries… maybe just a bad day, not sure. :(

Extremely disappointed in our order tonight. Have heard so many great things about Fries and Co and it was the worst meal my husband and I have had in a very long time. He ordered a burger since we were told they were the best in Halifax. It was dripping with grease and the bun was soggy from it. I ordered clams and the only thing that I could taste was grease. We also both ordered poutines. When we arrived home, we had only received one when we had ordered 2. Also could only taste grease. It was absolutely horrible and we had to throw it all out. I called to speak to someone at the restaurant. There was no answer and no one returned my message. Might as well thrown my $ 30 in the garbage.

Oh Fries & CO what have you done? Why did you feel the need to make changes to your fine menu?
Yesterday I ordered onion rings and a deluxe burger and my wife ordered a fish burger and my daughter ordered poutine. A nice healthy family meal! My burger was burned. The «Canadian back bacon» was so tough I literally could not bite through it. The dill pickles, although they were good quality pickles were over powering and there was so much ketchup and other condiments that it turned into a gross soggy mess. It was one of the worst burgers I’ve had. They used to have amazing burgers. I am not sure what happened. The onion rings were gigantic donuts of deep fried batter with shriveled onions somewhere deep inside. I took a couple bites and returned it. The lady at Fries & CO refunded my money for the onion rings. Again, worst onion rings ever. My wife had better luck with her fish burger. It was a large filet of fish (haddock I assume) and was served on a good quality bun and was accompanied with packaged tartar sauce. She really liked it. It was a huge serving as well. The poutine was very good too. The gravy was very well seasoned and the fries were fresh and crisp. They use mozza cheese not curds which is fine I guess. I personally prefer curds but some people like mozza.
At Fries and Co the fish is fine but the burger and onion rings — not so fine.

Well, the revamped Fries & Co. is a bit of a disappointment.
The problem with using previously frozen clams is that they become tough and chewy when they’re deep fried. While I was impressed with how quickly my takeout order was ready, I would happily have waited another few minutes while they finished cooking the fries.
Between the chewy clams and soggy fries, I think I’ll give this place a pass next time I’m looking for comfort food on a chilly Halifax evening.

Despite being just around the block from my girlfriend’s apartment, it took us the better part of a year to finally have some Fries & Co. food. On an evening where my other half was under the weather and I wasn’t in the cooking mood, some comfort food take out seemed like a solid option.
Checking out the menu online before heading out, I already knew that I had to try their fish and chips, it was just a given. However, one unique, gut-​busting item caught my eye — the battered burger. So naturally I decided to cut back to one piece of fish and also get the battered burger and to check to make sure that my will was up to date. My girlfriend went with the pineapple burger since she’s a big fan of the spiked fruit and there’s not a whole lot of options for someone who isn’t a fan of fish.
Showing up to place my take out order, the place was pretty quaint with a handful of tables on the main level (there’s more upstairs) and a counter to order at. Also of note, there are two jars of pickled eggs on the counter and if I hadn’t already planned on ordering an unholy burger, I would have given it a try. After all the times I saw Moe’s jar of pickled eggs on The Simpsons, how could ya not? Oh wait… never mind. While waiting for my bountiful meal of vitamins and nutrition, I heard an odd explanation of their new fish ordering system of sizes instead of numbers of pieces of fish. A small is one piece of your normal sized fish, medium is one piece of a larger piece of fish, and a large is one of each. What made them break ranks with a much more efficient and simple fish ordering paradigm, I do not know. After a short wait I was on my way around the corner with my bags of food.
Upon arriving at my destination and after opening up the bags, it was interesting to see that the burgers and fish and chips were in trays and wrapped in waxed paper which was a thumbs up over the usual Styrofoam trays and a thumbs up from our friend the planet. After re-​plating all the food, I had to dig into the battered burger first. It certainly appeared as advertised — a fully battered burger patty between two buns with your usual condiments, although there unfortunately wasn’t any cheese or even the basic burger veggies, which didn’t help my conscience either. On the first few bites, everything wassuper crispy, both the batter and surprisingly the bun. They did a heck of a job buttering and toasting it on the flat top, so kudos. The patty itself, although a nice handmade one, is on the dry side of the spectrum, likely suffering from being cooked twice — once before being battered and then the run through the deep fryer. I would definitely suggest less time on the griddle before deep frying. Also on the down side of thing, the batter on the burger completely went to mush after a bit, and I feel like some lettuce could have saved the day here and added a bit of colour to the burger, if not many health benefits other than not being fried.
The fish and chips were next up for consumption. The fish had its ups and downs. While it was fairly flaky, it was also a a bit more moist than it should have been and not in a good way. The batter was seasoned nicely, but wasn’t as airy as I like it, but that’s just my preference. The namesake fries were a nice golden brown, but somewhat soggy. They are somewhat thick, and could definitely benefit from the double fry technique to cook them through and them crisp them up. The lone bite I had of my girlfriend’s pineapple burger was probably the all around best part of the meal, with an nicely cooked, if unspectacular patty, cheese and a bit of sweetness from the pineapple.
There has been some work on the façade and upstairs of the building in recent years, but the food coming out of the kitchen is what definitely needs to get the most focus if Fries and Co. wants to be more than two stars and three letters — ‘meh’.

Very tasty fish and chips. I wouldn’t eat-​in since, as others have pointed out, it’s a tad crowded, but for some good take out it hits the spot.

I was 100% underwhelmed with Fries and Company, the Fish was basically floating in grease and had a bit of a odd taste (maybe the oil was old). The portions of fish were giant but I would rather have smaller portions of better fish. As a side I did have the sweet potato fries and they were not horrible but the fish was put on top so there was allot of excess grease that poured off the fish.
One positive note it was very fast (5 mins tops) and price point was good $ 12 for a 2 piece with sweet potato fries. But the fish was so nasty I only had about half of 1 piece and tossed the grease soaked fries so not a good value.

Looking for some quick takeout fish and chips? This a great place to go. Delicious, fresh haddock two-​piece fish and chips are $ 10.00 and very fast. I had this and a cup of coffee which was ready in about 5 minutes. The waiters/​waitresses were very nice and attentive, but there were no table menus and you had to order at the front. This place was obviously designed as a quick bite to eat type of diner. The coffee was pretty cheap flavoured as well and was probably sitting there for a while, though nothing unexpected.
This place is ideal for cheap takeout, a quick sit in, or even a fun time with your family, but I don’t think I’d come here with my friends.

Pretty decent fries but kind of ‘meh’ everything else, if I’m being completely honest.
The inside doesn’t improve much over the exterior, staff stick behind a walled-​in counter, waiting silently until you figure out what you want, and your order is handed back through the window five minutes later in disposable dishes. Pretty down and dirty, no frills fry restaurant.
If you do go, dare to be different and try your poutine Newfoundland style with gravy and dressing (as in, Thanksgiving stuffing but finer) instead of gravy and curds. I can’t say it competes with the cheese variety in my opinion, but it’s definitely worth a bite to say you’ve tried it!

Fries and company has been around sine 1974 and still located at 2603 Connolly Street. Going there as a small kids I used to love the fish and chips it was a real treat back then.
Over the years the location has changed adding a second floor for more setting, fireplace that keeps you warm on those winter days. The menu has burgers as well if you are not a fish fan. The gravy I think is one of the BEST around and the homemade fries are delicious. One thing that I like is that batter is light and golden brown so that you can actually taste the fish.
Again a favorite on payday.

This is probably one of the Best Fish and Chips I know of. Growing up around it, it was our favorite. Small but Good.
Fresh fish (Haddock), Home Made Fries. (this makes a big difference for me). Fast and Good. It has a downstairs eating area as well as upstairs.
When you are there, read some of the articles on the wall. It has a lot of interesting stuff.
