I make my own crepes and make my own flatbread pizza, but who ever thought to make a pizza on a crêpe, Creperie Mobile, that’s who. Nom nom, perfection. Had the Italian; mozza, tomato, ham and fresh basil all wrapped up in a buckwheat crêpe. Doesn’t get much better than that. I didn’t experience the waits that others have found. Only four people ahead of me and four crêpe pans working. The only suggestion I would make is to have a sign«Place Order at Cash». Myself and a few other newbies weren’t sure of the protocol upon arrival and a sign would have helped. I think I’ve found my brunch spot when I’m at the market and a new dish to try at home when I can’t make it to the market.

I’m having a hard time even writing this review because it’s taking everything I have to stay at my computer versus driving to the market right this second to eat more crepes than any one person should. THAT’s how good they are. Savoury crepes are my calling. Cheese, basil, tomatoes? GETINMYFACE. I mean, I just love them. They’re like a great Italian meal meets dessert that you can eat at breakfast without being judged. If you can think of something more perfect than that, you are a filthy liar. The staff are friendly enough to turn your morning frown upside-down and you can really tell they love what they do. And I certainly love that they love what they do. The only downside that keeps me from putting on 80lbs of crêpe-weight is the wait time. Crepes take time, that’s obvious, but there aren’t any good places to stand, frothing at the mouth in anticipation, especially on busy Saturday mornings. I’m not saying it’s not 100% worth it, but I get jumpy and territorial with the promise of crepes. Having to jockey around for position on an empty stomach just doesn’t work for me.

We grabbed a crêpe here for a quick lunch before taking a tall ship tour of the harbour. We had a friendly chat with the chef while we waited and our crepes were delicious. Our only regret was not making it back for some sweet crepes!

My distaste for lines is sometimes quelled when I see something I really want, or when I smell something so divine that I must have it at any cost. Perhaps not really at any cost, but I’m willing to wait for fifteen minutes for a crêpe if the mood strikes. I love the tomato, mozza and basil crêpe; it’s a French version of the Margarita pizza and y’all know how I love a pizza. If I’m feeling sassy and sweet, I’ll hop out on a sugary limb and go for the chocolate and banana delight. The crepes are made while you watch, by cuties in little berets. The prices are pretty good; I’m always satisfied post-crêpe both hunger and taste wise. If you’re able to navigate your way into this offshoot compartment down one of the many cavernous halls of the market, then you should pop in line and pick up a crêpe. Don’t cut it too close though; sometimes they start cutting the line off early so as to accommodate as many people as possible before the market closes up shops. Bön appetit!

The Creperie Mobile is hands down one of my favorite features of the Halifax Farmers Market. There are very few things that can get me out of bed before noon on a Saturday, and these crepes are worth missing some sleep over. It’s consistently packed at the Creperie Mobile, week after week and even if I’ve already eaten breakfast I usually find myself gravitating towards this crowded pastry booth. My favorite crepes are the sweet selections(the applesauce and cinnamon is always a classic) but if you are looking for more of a meal you can get eggs, cheese, ham and seasonings as well.

The Creperie Mobile line was almost out the door when we walked in. This was my first time buying their crepes. We bought the Ham, Egg and Cheese Crêpe. There is quite an art to making these things, not many second chances to get it right. The crowd is pretty hungry in this market. The Crêpe was hot and ready to eat. This is a mastered science in itself. It was quit clear to everyone around us, that we were novice crêpe eaters. This is a very messy eat, but good. I do not recommend this as a first date experience. I think the next time we will try the sugar rush, bananas and chocolate.

Usually when I’m the market on Saturday morning I have no allegiances. I buy different things from different vendors every time. There are really only two exceptions to this rule, one of which is the Creperie Mobile. Since they are essentially my first experience with Crepes(I was a sheltered child), I don’t have a lot to base my opinion on, but I find it hard to believe that these would not be among the best! My personal favorite is the basil, tomato, ham and cheese crêpe, so you have the best of both worlds(The other world being the wild world of omelets) folded delicately into one. The Creperie Mobile always seems to have a line up regardless of time and they occasionally seem to get a little overwhelmed. This can lead to running out of utensils, napkins etc. But just ask and they’ll usually have more behind the counter. It’s a minor annoyance, but not near enough a problem to be considered a deal breaker. I haven’t had many other Crepes since I tried these and I really don’t see the need, I’m fairly certain I’ve already found the best crepes in our fair city!

Not that it’s easy to discern one crowd from another at the Saturday morning farmers market but if you happen to be downstairs near the brewery entrance… that crowd is looking for one thing: crepes. The folks at Creperie Mobile have quite the assembly line going so you better make your pick, quick! Anything with chocolates and berries is a sure win with me but these crepes really are a cut above. Special bonus: You can take them outside and eat by the waterfront.

Stopping for crepes at the market is a big part of many Haligonians’ Saturday routines, and often makes it into my market visit, too. These folks make a tasty crêpe, it can’t be denied. And they’re so easy to personalize to your specific mood that Saturday morning. If I’m in the mood for sweet I often go lemon juice and sugar, but if I feel savory I usually go tomato basil mozzarella. Really though my heart lies with the sweet-savory combo. A few have called is an abomination, but there’s nothing I like better atop a pancake than apples, cheddar cheese and maple syrup. The Creperie is happy to oblige, which means I get to spend my Saturday morning with a happy belly.
